I was just reading that.  Not a bad score.  Not bad at all.

Maybe I should take the plunge and buy a new graphic card.  I heard new ones are coming out in June though.  So, I'm trying to be patient.

    Not bad at all.

Seems like posters in this thread: http://www.mmorpg.com/discussion2.cfm/thread/183710

need to read this, then the user reviews all 2k plus of them, then the critical press scores...

AoC is getting great reviews so far.

  • ElectriceyeElectriceye Member UncommonPosts: 1,171

I agree it's a good review especially for an MMO.

Only WoW (95%!!!) and DAoC (91%) got a better score at release (not counting expansions) on Gamespot.

And looking on the bright side, it can only get better after ironing out the obvious bugs and stuff. All MMOs improve after release.

The reviewers feel sorry for funcom guys...so they say the game is great...i feel sorry for funcom also...lost 5 years making this game...but it has imba graphics...

  • HashbrickHashbrick Member RarePosts: 1,851

I like in the title how it referred to it as an online RPG. Are they hinting at something here? It's a decent review and deserves the score it got, but if they would have outlined the more serious problems currently it would have been a better more unbiased review. Either way AoC is not a bad game just not finished and the reason why I will not subscribe to it. Months down the road once fix up etc it will probably be a different experience but not releasing with promised features was also a turn off. Anyway thx for the link.

Hinting at something? hmm and heres me thinking that this is what Aoc was always meant to be..an online RPG, come on thats why i brought the game in the first place. Because it was an online RPG! just like Everquest and the rest of them lol. when you start a character in an online game and and decide to play as that class/race, then your roleplaying :) i dont think they hinted at it at all...they just simply stated a fact. What i dont understand is why people tout it as something bad? i was once a huge sceptic of Aoc but then i played it and felt silly. i should have known right from the start not to listen to mmo sites lol.

"Age of Conan has plenty of room to grow and a number of issues that need fixing, but even now, it offers a rewarding adventure abundant with character and fascinating backstory. The combat system perfectly suits the adult nature of the quests, and is the finest one yet seen in an online RPG. In spite of its current bugs and glitches, Age of Conan is a remarkably entertaining journey through a dark and mature world of beasts and brutality."

I would say this sums up my experience pretty well.

i think the review posted here is overall more accurate for potential subscribers.

  • SilvervingeSilvervinge Member Posts: 18

A pretty much spot - on - review by Gamespot. Surprisingly enough. I would've expected something else from them, considering the recent history..

Spot on, meaning that AoC resides somewhere in the group just behind the giants of the past of MMO's..there's where I've placed it, mentally, when I've thought about it. 8.5 is close to LoTROs 8.3 and I feel that AoC and LoTRO will be games that have a neck-to-neck race concerning subscriptions in the future.

AoC is not a horrible game, so whomever expected a <6.0 mark on Gamespot are insane. Its just not an excellent game and it will not put a great dent into the annals of history concerning MMOs, like other games before it has done.. (Uh..denting annals might not sound as clearly positive as I wanted it to, oh well...)

I dont think the game has personality enough for me to want to play it beyond the free month. I needed and wanted something "special" and in MY eyes it did not deliver, although Funcom said it would. Then again, whom can trust norwegians? ;)

have yet to play AoC, but the reason why even bad games get good reviews(see Vanguard and HG:L) is because the review companies are getting tons of cash in advertisement revenue and if they posted a bad review, that money would cease to come in.

you really have to take the reviews of games from major publishers with a grain of salt. they pour an assload of money into advertising on these sites and other places.

the poster above you is referring to the fact that AoC is not (according to some) an MMORPG and simply an ORPG. I havent even played the game and i can figure that one out.

  • shukes33shukes33 Member Posts: 1,051

Thats the whole point i am trying to make. people keep saying how its just an "org" but since i have been playing i am having a great group experience and also a great rpg experience. so yes friend i "worked that one out" hopefully even you could work out the sarcasm in my reply :).

Lol sometimes i find it hard to put things into words, i was just fighting sarcasm with sarcasm friend, didnt mean anything by it!

  • they gave it an 8.5 ignoring the bugs, and other issues with the game. Yeah sounds like they got payed for that review.

Haha, here is the new trend from the haters:

"If the review is not totally negative, the reviewer was obviously on the payroll"

    Right ...

    In other words:

    "No positive reviews are allowed"

Objectivity right out of the window.

IGN at the top of their post say bugs and glitches withstanding. How do you ignore the absolute game breaking bugs? I am sorry, if their review would of been worth the bandwidth it consumes they wouldn't ignore them. Normally IGN is fairly good at pointing out the garbage, and AoC is filled with it.

I guess Gamespot, along with Gamespy, Gamezone, G4, Atomicgamer, IGN, Metalcritic amongst others are ALL on Funcom's payroll?

    Haha! typical troll!

EDIT: And what about the users scores on each site? have FC payed thousands of players to  write decent reviews?

You need a break, trolling is getting to you! :o

On the theme of objectivity: 8.5 is not awesome. Its a good review, certainly, but its not up there with the MMO-greats, according to Gamespot, and I happen to agree.

Its a good game but its in the group behind the genre-greats, not a genre-great..and why that is necessary to say is because there seems to be merely "the game sucks donkey-eyeball" or "the game is the best ever made"...and, as always, the truth is somewhere in the middle.

Can you tell the difference between:

      1. Wanting something to fail and,

      2. Something being a failure?

Some people want this game to fail so bad, it's unhealthy.

  • Deto123Deto123 Member Posts: 689

I agree wanting it to fail is unhealthy. I think some people are just a little more then upset with what the game turned out to for them. I suggest stepping back from your comp a few days. That said i was also upset and gave into they hype myself. I know alot like it and thats great, but for me i m moving onto something more to my liking. Whatever that may be hell maybe i ll play offline games a bit till some other MMO s are released.
