final opinion a 7 of 10

the good :

final opinions on AoC at level 20 something

pretty graphics if you have the machine to display them - 9

nicely thought out world, well done Funcom - 9

the quests are well written - 10

good animation on both PCs and NPC's -9

music - very good - 8

the bad:

bugs - too many - 5

Customer Service - negative 1

fun factor - 5

Replayability - 1

Interface - 5

AoC has a lot of good things going for it, also some bad things going against it.

The fanboys have covered the good pretty well and posted 5 gazillion screen shots already but to sumit up the graphics are real pretty, the animations are supurb, and the music is very good. FC did a great job with the  world and the overall atmosphere of the game. Immersion was as good as Oblivion but unfortunatly that is what the game reminded me of.  A single player game. That is not why I play a MMORPG.

Now the bad.

The game should have stayed in the oven a bit longer.  The CS is crap, worse than crap really. Stil even with the negative aspects I should have liked this game, however by level 25 I was bored to tears. Nothing really new here. Combat is a bit more twitchy but if you have  a minimum of motor skills, enough to walk and chew gum at the same time, yopu should have it  mastered by level  15. I could never make a alt here. Having to do those first 20 levels over and over just repels me.

Funcom was overwhelmed by AoC's sales and the level of problems. When the game runs it runs great for me, when their patch broke the game for me FC was of zero help. 10 days since I submitted a email service ticket and never recieved a single email back except for the auto reply. Fixed the issue my self and yes it was their patch whicth broke the game. Piss poor quality control and spaghetti coding.

Unless you have a good guild forget the community. PUG's are a joke. Even trying to get the entire group into the same instance is a chore. The rest of the community makes the cliche of the WoW community look good. And that was on a PvE server. Most just want to level grind solo.  Gear itemization is non existent. 99.999 % of all item drops are vendor crap. Not once in 25 levels did I get a 'oooohhhhh look at this" moment from a mob drop.

Ok now is the time for all the fanboys and shills to jump in and call me a troll blah blah balh. Have at it kids but I am through with this game for at leat six months. I may try it again this winter, on the other hand I may not. Overall I would give the game a grade of 7 of 10. In six months it may work it's way up to 8 but I have the feeling the single player feel will not change much and that is what really ruins the game for me.

I miss DAoC

Hey man I jsut wanna say, from a fanboi or whatever you wanna call me, I respect your opinion, your not a troll obviously, and I hope you come back when some of those cons are ironed out. I think your judging the rest of the game a bit harshly for your terrible CS experience... but i'd definantly be really pissed about that happening to me, or maybe it just didnt suit you. But yeah often after release games are pretty messy community wise + bug wise etc till things calm down. Have you read the letter from the director? It sounds like lots of good things are coming this month, so maybe return a little earlier bro! Just try to keep an open mind.

OK that was queer... I dunno why im defending this game so much, I just find its the most fun i've had in a while gaming so yeah i'd like to see it succeed and prosper.

well I am sure that sooner or later FC will fix most of the things I have a issue with but I don't think it will ever feel like a MMORPG to me.  Not that that should worry Funcom, it is probably a good signfor them that I did not cvare for the game. I only played WoW to lvl 25 and look what a flop that game is , never bought Guild Wars either and they only sold how many million copies.

  • Enjoy the flames.

You review looks about good when I compare other people that seem to be trying to be somewhat objective.

The fun factor thing seems to vary fairly wildly and seems to mostly come down to the combat.  Some people think it adds spice other people do not disagree but instead think that it gets cumbersome or tedious.

That is mostly what I will be watching over the next months as I think both views have legitimate points on the matter.

Although you did not get to the later levels of combos which is where I think that really starts to set in.

Replayability at lvl 20 is 1?

Personally, I know I couldn't wait to do level 1-20 again in WoW...

    Your review is really premature...

If I were to review aoc based on level ranges I'd say the following

    1-20 - 9

    21-40 - 7

    41-60 - 5

61-80 - ? ( I think it might go up if the info posted about all the high end dungeons being really polished isn't total BS.

I agree pretty much with Jackdog on this. I would like to add a couple of things though:

    - To me the world feels very confined and not as living as it could have been.

    - It is very much a theme park, as is WoW and Lotro but even more so than those games. I personally prefer more sandbox style games, such as Vanguard or Star wars galaxies.

    - The sound in this game is nothing but superb, the best I have heard in any MMO!

    - Graphics are great, but to me VG graphics are better/more pleasant. I also prefer Lotro graphics over AoC. However, this could also be due to my computer.

    - As Jack said, very little interaction between players.

    - If the endgame pvp with city vs city fights is good then that could make this a great game for those into that sort of thing!

Anyway, a good game with a decent launch but probably not for me.

I think it's a pretty fair review and mirrors my own opinions pretty closely.

For me, there are some technical aspects which mar the experience, namely the problem with the game seeminly underoptimized for ati users.  There are literally hundereds of posts on this subject on the official tech forums so I am not alone.

Unfortunately I am in a bit of a 'box'.  I tried to upgrade to an 8800 gt but my motherboard is pcei 1.0 and the 8800 gt's only support pcie 1.x and 2.0.  Someone suggested going with a lesser nvidia card but I can't see doing that really.  If I am going to spend money, it will be on a newly released card.  I have my eye on the ati 4XXX.  Hopefully these cards are also backward compatible.

I cancelled my sub for now.  If they patch the game and fix this problem, I will give the game another chance.  I really do like quite a few aspects of AOC so I remain hopeful they will fix the problem, my only concern is on what timetable the fixes will arrive.

I'd probably rate the pros and cons the same as Jackdog and i'm already lvl 47 DT.

It just gets worse the higher level you go up, and not just my opinion, but many others that i've read too.  It's just another "potential" game, and we all know how those turn out.

if I am not having fun at lvl 25 why should I think I would enjoy it at lv 50, or 60. Fun is a very subjective thing. Like I pointed out , a lot of people like WoW, I could not stand it. I liked EQII, but that game was never a big success. I was playing DAoC when everyone else was playing EQ1. I love LoTRO, other people are bored to tears by it. I want to like EvE but that game never did anything for me the several time I tried it.

I gave AoC my all, busted my ass to get the game working after FC busted it with that patch but the fun factor never kicked in ..period. I just always felt as if I was playing Oblivion with a chatbox. That has it's place but I am not paying a monthly fee for it.

Just like I said the fact I do not like the game should not mean crap to anyone but me.

    I miss DAoC
