Well I have played MMO's since they started. Played Diplomacy in the early 80's, Meridian 59, UO, EQ1, and just about all since then. (Except ones that had anime).
Anyway I have decided that MMO's are no longer for me. I am 62 years old and I am fed up with the way MMO's are today.
So I am going to get an Xbox 360 and play games that I dont have to put up with gold sellers, obnoxcious children, raids, etc.
I would like to thank MMO's for all the years of enjoyment they gave me but it is time to leave.

At 62 I think you've more than served your time, enjoy your retirement!
I share your views on the genre. Read through some of these forums and you can see the decline in the quality of the games and the general maturity of the gamers.
For some reason I just can't get into single player console games. I wish you the best of luck with it. I may have to go back to reading as my primary pastime if this trend continues.
Can I have your stuff?
LOL, He's not dying you know...
@ Kb4blu
Yeah, MMOs aren't that great at the moment... if you haven't tried Wurm you might want to take a look at it before you leave the genre. If you do give MMOs up, come back in a few years and see if any of the new ones will be up to par.
Hey Oldster!!
Only kidding..I'm 62 myself...I'm trying DDO again..I tried it when it first came out....If not i may just go with UO..surely a lack of kiddies there(I hope)..Or maybe more mature kids at least.
good luck..i will game till i'm 90 but i agree with your reasons for quitting MMO'S.
Tom
I am 35 and have been playing MMO's since 1992 when I got into a MUD called Den of Dragons or something like that.
Then a guy I worked with got my into the test of Meridian59 with him, I have since beta tested and or played every main stream MMO that has come along.
I also am fed up with the lack of development that has been put into these game, the decline in the player mentality, and the all around decline in the enjoyment of the games.
I was recently invited by Sony to come back and play EQ and EQ2 for the next month or so for free, and I instantly downloaded EQ, I haven't played much, but I have only seen maybe half a dozen other players in the noobie zones, which is kind of nice, I think I will play it for the free time, but I doubt I will play it any further.
As far as the xbox360, I love mine, and I play it more then my computer these days, I can kick back on the couch, or my sleep comfort bed with the motorized frame that puts me in a sitting postion, and play on my big screen TV.
I need multiplayer games though, and the majority of them on the xbox360 are FPS games, which I am getting beter at, but they are not as much fun as a good RPG.
They have FFXI on the 360 which I have considered, but have yet to leap into, and Age of Conan will be out on the 360 with in the next year. I am hoping this will lead to a new influx of MMO's on the 360.
I will tell you now!, if you are tired of children and thier stupidity in game play, be prepared to take the 360 head set and just cut the cord. This way you can'y hear them, otherwise a typical session of COD4 will result in the use of the N-word approximetly 35 times, constant 12 year olds and younger useing the terms Yo Biatch, and noob. And atleast one account of a 9 year old threating to f your mom.
I will admit though, the last couple of months that has toned down a ton, not sure if I finally put all the idiots on my ignore list, or if Microsoft has laid down a good butt whooping on these abusers.
One way or the other, it is calming down, and my last couple of months on COD4 have actually been very plesant, I have played a couple other online games and have not been assault verbally as much as before either.
If you get a 360 and get a gold membership add me to your friends list with the gamertag Lord Twisted. I would be more then happy to play.
Not so nice guy!
Nice to know there are (or were) a few players around who are older than I am. But I am new to gaming so I'm not yet played out.
I had a friend get me a free trial of Portal recently, I had a LOT more fun than I expected.
Welcome to gaming, Portal is a fun game.
Not so nice guy!
I say.. don't give up, we got Darkfall and Mortal Online. Yes vaporware! but we can always hope. And there will be others. More and more people are fed up with stupid MMOs every day.
Like me for instance..I'm getting close to going to UO..
I remember when we had play by turn games on BBS's, where you played 1 turn a day and a package went out via a fidonet type network, if not fidonet itself. was excited when UO came out and spent years playing it untill the crafting system of Starwars Galaxies caught me, then moved to wow with the nge curse. There were still kids talking trash back then, they might not have butchered the english language like they do now, but they were around. I did not really see gold sellers until wow.
As for the Xbox, I am not going to get one until another Mech Assault game comes out that has not it!

Dear Sir,
Try out LOTRO before you condemn all MMO's. I was in a very similar situation to youself, swore off MMO's due to all the issues. I used to think MMO's would be great if it wasn't for all the people
I joined LOTRO and found the community to be exactly what I was missing in my MMO experience. The community is the most mature of any game I've played online. Give it a try.
I'm on Arkenstone server.
Well then can i haz ur stuf???
MMOs are a little lame now...
But I just cant give up multiplayer for console gaming. Yes consoles have multiplayer, but its not the same.
Age of Conan will be out at the start of next year.
Not so nice guy!
Excellent decision.
May I suggest:
- Mass Affect for a great sci-fi RPG, great story telling
- Halo 3 for some great FPS action and super solid online gaming.
- GTA IV, just because it's awesome.
- Virtua Fighter Online if you want one of the most complete fighters ever put together.
- Rainbow Six, Vegas 2 if you want one of the most solid Tactical fighters ever produced.
- Gears of War, for pure out and out fun
- Forza Racing for one of the best auto racers ever done.
- Kane and Lynch, not the best gamers gamer ever but awesome story telling, great characters
- Get the Orange Box, it's almost mandatory at this point.
- Call of Duty 4, if for nothing else than playing online is crazy fun.
- Lego Starwars The Trilogy, if you don't take yourself to seriously, just great fun, makes you feel like a kid again.
- Bioshock, more great story teling, amazing environments.
- If you hadn't picked up Fable a few years ago, log onto Xbox Live, pay the $10 and download, you wont regret it.
- And a slew of amazing, best in series Sports games like Madden, NHL, Kick, you name it.
There's many more but that will keep you busy for some time. BTW, get the Elite, you'll be happy you did later and don't forget that extended warranty, again, you wont regret it.
These things red ring like mad!

Bioshock and Mass Effect AWESOME! might just add Oblivion into there as well.
GTAIV I love the game except one feature, every other word is f this, f that, and no option to make it a bit more mellow. I personally don't mind, but i turn the volume up to get the story line, and I refuse to play it while my daughter is in the house because of it.
As far as the red ring of death, it seems to have been worked out, as long as you are buying a newer xbox360 you should be fine.
But I would suggest getting one with the big hard drive already on it, because when a good MMO type game comes along for the xbox that you will want to play, you will need the room.
Not so nice guy!
If you can't stand WoW, or it bores you to tears, LoTRo will bore you even faster.
Want a taste of religion? Lick a witch.
I am almost in the same boat but I am just trying to be patient for Darkfall, you should just check the updates from time to time and try that out when it comes out.. I believe that will be my final MMORPG..
If you don't then have a nice life man..
I'm right behind you. Its the damn community all they do is complain, I just can't take it any more.
I just got a 360. Check out Rock Band and GTA IV. And get Orange box for PC if you don't have it yet.
TF2 is a blast.
I played some Meridian 59 back in the day, but I was more into MUDing back then. Ah, the good old days.
Heh one more year and I'd be half your age.
I began my single player RPG days with Legacy of the Ancients on the C64 and started the MMO days with AC2.
Definitely agree with you about those annoying gold spammers, their tells, and mail. Seems like one can't have 1 minute free with those things popping up every 30 seconds. Practically back to back is one factor that destroyed my PotBS enjoyment, EQ2, and WoW.
The community is no better with guild politics and PUGs being what evaporated my concept of continuing WoW. After quitting WoW for good I almost didn't play anymore MMOs after that.
One day these MMO companies are going to have to learn to watch their chat on servers at least. The cost might be high but it sure would be worth it.
The discussion on the server I was on last night in AoC is one that quite didn't belong in a game that's supposed to be entertainment.
Anyway good luck and I hope you enjoy the non MMO games you play.

The difference between WoW and LOTRO is the community. Far fewer kiddies running around trying to gank you in LOTRO. Much more mature and helpful community in LOTRO. Basically WoW is a very good MMO its the community and end game that ruin WoW.
LOTRO fixes both the community and the end game.
BTW: You can't go wrong with all the great MMO's on the 360, I did the same thing. Especially Mass Effect, what an amazing game. What I missed though was the social interaction you gain in an MMO. For instance we were talking about the greatest bands last night in guild chat, while doing a guild hunt.
BTW: In LOTRO when we discussed great bands, names like Led Zepp, Pink Floyd, Tom Petty, Boston, Stones, came up. Not POS bands like Backstreet Boys, NSYNC, 25 cents, or any of that other MTV garbage.
*bow's respectfully* hope you find pleasure in the world of the single player rpg
You forgot Oblivion
