Man why are the graphics soo ugly?

deepdishdeepdish Member Posts: 28

It's very hard to point out what is sooo horrible about them but everyone I asked just said EQ2 graphics suck, even back in 2004. Everything just looks soooo plastic and fake looking and the worlds have sooo little detail and feel really barren and pre generated. Everything just feels very generic and ugly I just can't stay it and it's like they had to rush making the zones or something. The game just has no Art style at all and while I loved the look of the starter island and then Qeynos after that the game just went to crap and even the new zones it just all feels so fake.......

The most ugly plastic looking character models ever! I mean the Lizardman thing looks kool but the other races with human type skin just look sooo bad and specially the human Female model which looks like she's doped and the Asain models don't help because they're sooo emo and annoying and seem to not fit in with the rest of the games bland art style so they stick out like a sore thumb.

I dunno I just think the Graphics are the most horrible thing i've seen and it's a example that Art style wins over a poorly optimized engine.

I kind of like the graphics in EQII, but then, graphics are not a determining factor for which games I play.

After I saw some of your posts It seems you just dont enjoy MMORPGs .

The game has an unique art style, you can identify Everques2 as soon as you see any image from this game, there is a difference between no style and a style you dont like.

Again, you are not able to judge art style vs graphics as you dont know what is art style.

Models from EQ2 are very charismatic and have one of the best animations I ever saw in a MMO, but as I said, it is an unique art style, it is not realistic and not cartoony, hard to please everyone.

Okay then, show me a game with better "Art" and "Graphics". But take that in note ; I'm not accepting WoW for obvious reason, nor am I accepting Age Of Conan because it is way too demanding for that kind of graphic, and of course, no Vanguard. Oh, and no game not yet released so you can chalk Warhammer Online and Darkfall, ok? I'm waiting.

If you think these graphics are ugly you're either running on performance setting(lowest quality), or you don't enjoy any games graphics.

  • KhrymsonKhrymson Member UncommonPosts: 3,090

Can get better fullscreen pics of in-game if you like, but just started up my old account and with this new PC can actually run this game on Max settings...damn does it look good!  Here are some pics of 4 of my old chars that I won't be playing again, as the normal EQII models and what they look like with the Asian Models upgrade!

Massive differences, just ask if you wanna see some full size in-game at maximum settings!

OP is confusing art with graphics, i really hate when people do that.

If you're going to criticize graphics, at least do so in it's context.

Yeah, I don't like the art.  I have to look at my character all the time and if it's ugly, it just bugs me.

I usually play human or some kind of elf.  They are really ugly looking.  This is my opinion so please take no offence if you find the graphics wonderful.  To me they look fat and plastic.

I tried the soga models.  For some reason I like them even less.

I will probably just uninstall the game again.

Lineage II but that's not the point.

to OP: When EQ2 first launched the graphics were top notch, they still aren't bad by today's mean but they do lack from what we are used to now. Each new graphical bar MMO or Game launched is going to make the older game inferior to graphics and we will have a mindset on the new gorgeous graphics. That being said it sounds more like you hate the art then the graphics and the art/style is passed down from EQ, but even the most die hard EQ fans will not play EQ2 so to each his own.

You've just banned every game released within the last 8 years that isn't a Korean Grinder. That sounds fair....

Here is my toon.. i guess i can see where you think it looks "plastic".

With any game that a person has been playing for so long.... you over look things that new players see because you are so use to it.

But to me.. i think my toon looks just fine   (for a 4 year old game ....not bad)

Decided on a class finally, here is my lvl 8 Dark Elf Coercer!

This is maximum settings, though there is a slight snag when I spin the camera cause of the viewing distance I have set!

  • deepdishdeepdish Member Posts: 28

Yeh thats another thing about EQ2 and that's it's very hard to pick a class, ended up making a few and not liking any of them because they all felt sooo generic.... why do I need 4 types or priest? Just make 1 type and make it really customizable like I hate to say it but WOW, now that game has fantastic and fun classes to play.

See for a game praised for it's graphics I have to say it's a horrible dated looking UI and the world just feels rather empty and lifess.... just no atmosphere to it.

    http://everquest2.station.sony.com/

I wish the game could look more like it does on this front page.

  • NocumaNocuma Member Posts: 97

There are only three types of priest

    Cleric

    Templar (Good)

    Inquisitor (Evil)

    Druid

    Fury(Good/Evil)

    Warden(Good/Evil)

    Shaman

    Mystic(Good)

    Defiler (Evil)

Why they made so many... some people love more options. Not saying thats the best way to go... but im happy EQ2 and WoW are Diff. Because when i get bored of EQ2 i go mess around on WoW until i get bored there..... then i come back to EQ2.

Also Video card settings can have almost just as big of a impacted on graphics as in game settings. So just because one person screenie doesnt look up to your standards doesnt mean thats how we all see it.  (as in "in game" graphics)

Please dont take this the wrong way im happy everyone doesnt like the same game.....or the MMO market would be very limited on options.

    See thats the thing I love so much about the UI here, is right from the start everything has many different options and you can move it all around wherever u want!  You're not stuck with some massive crappy bar in the bottom center of the screen you can't move.  You gotta wait until a user makes one that allows u to break it up and move it!  {WoW, AoC & in LOTRO u can't move it at all except the size of it.}

I like being able to make mass amounts of hotbars and lay them across the bottom of the screen and put the chat window down in the corner out of the way.  Many with that static UI in the center u get stuck with a chat window really short bunched up in the corner...blah

    Anyway....

really? I mean fat AND plastic... most of all they don't look plastic at all.. a good example is the magic armors in Oblivion a good game I must add but the magic armor is the best example on plastics look.. think you need to look at some plastic models and check your eyes again. As for fat either you have some disorder of some sort and actually want the characters to be even more slim.. Would look horrible imo.

If you think EQ2 has plastic look and fat character I'm curious of what games you have/are playing so I can understand your bashing.

  • VasburgVasburg Member Posts: 65

Quite a powerful engine for its time, but the characters DO look plastic (ironically, the higher your settings and the better your hardware, the more plastic does everything look), and characters just look bleh.

Humans got *terrible* hairstyle choices (which basically leads to everyone looking the same, because 90% of the choices are just out of question), female humans look like they have the Down syndrome, and it became even worse with the introduction of SOGA (alternaitve) character models.

Those are the ugliest character models I have EVER seen in ANY game - and I have absolutely no control over somebody else seeing me as an anorexiac, 12 years old manga-tranny... (SOGA introduction was the reason I stopped playing EQ2 for real, only coming back every now and then.)

Also the art design (partialy limited by the engine) is bland. There is pretty much ONE armor and ONE robe geometry, reskinned a 4000 times. Well, they are supposedly working on a skeleton revamp, since right now they are not able to put new armor models (other than the single one existing since launch) into the game, because the nature of the limited engine requires to create a complete armor geometry for every race/gender combo in the game (which is like what... 40?).

Seeing the art design of armors and environment in games like Guild Wars always made me wanna cry.

Anyway, despite its blandness I am glad that there are still a few MMORPGs out there without that horrible manganime look almost every MMO seems to have.

And despite my gripes with the EQ2 engine, the generic character development with hardly any room for customization (every player of class X and level Y basically has exactly the same attributes and skills, AAs and items being the only way for at least some individualization) the game itself is probably the best PvE MMO currently available. (The PvP server[s] was a LOT of fun as well, but is pretty much dead by now... bummer, really.)

[e]Oh, and I agree that EQ2 has pretty much the best UI ever made. Actually you can customize every pixel of it. All praise eq2interface.com

Well, it is not the point , but I belive the only reason the OP is expressing this point of view is to annoy EQ2 comunity...

Anyway, about Lineage 2 and Everquest 2...

Armos, Weapons and some Dungeons in Lineage2 are very well done art/graphic wise, but the characters are just based in a cheap version of final fantasy and in general are more blocky than WoW characters... anime style is not the issue, but the generic anime style ( and I belive soga models are a generic anime style example too ) L2 uses arent exacly good, this changed a bit with Kamael.

The forests from L2 are horrid , but places like antonica in Everquest2 are also at the same level, but the characters in EQ2 ( even if you dont like the style ) are much more expressive, unique and well done than L2.

When we start to see Tokuma Shoten ´s anime style in games I will problably be happier with this anime in game concept.

Some places like DoF dungeons have a pretty expressive art style and concept in EQ2, and all the spell effects, animations and uniqueness make Everquest 2 in overall a more expressive and better looking game than Lineage 2.

But armors, dungeons and some raid bosses are very impressive in Lineage 2.

Anyway, the only major issue I see in both games are the natural landscapes,  only now after Vanguard and Age of Conan we can experience a good looking forest in MMOs.

Guild wars is for sure more impressive in art style than both games, but some how Everquest 2 still more unique in how it looks.

To me its about having fun. I can appreciate nice graphics, however graphics don't necessarily make the game compelling or engaging. The graphics are adequate because it provides reasonable representation. I don't think there is a definitive standard from which we can define 'good graphics', I think it comes down to personal preference.

Get used to that robe. You'll be wearing the same type of robe for the next 80 levels.
