This game takes a pretty good PC to run. I finally broke down and put a pretty good rig together, and what a difference it makes.
I can pretty much play very smoothly at High quality. There is still some hitching (I pretty sure everyone experiences this to some extent), and inside towns with several NPC's I'm usually about 25-30 FPS.
I can say I'm pretty much satisfied. I never really expected to be able to play this game at the highest levels anyway
My question is, what are considered the top resource hogs as far as settings? What would be the two or three settings that would have the most drastic effect on my FPS?
I enjoy the differences between High quality and balanced, but I'm looking for a tweek or two that will give me a boost to maybe keep me above 30FPS everywhere on High quality.

it would appear that the biggest performance 'hog' in your case would be Windows Vista. I don't know how optimized they are lately, but in all past tests performance between XP and Vista was 30-40% in favor of XP...
other than that, Volumetric clouds are said to hit performance badly, as do light sources and shadows. Also set # of channels in your vgclient.ini file to 16 from 32.
But seeing as the graphics engine still isn't fully optimized, you can't rely on a hard and fast rule depending on you components, since some things might work for you and others not. It's a trial and error approach currently, play a bit with the settings and see how performance responds.
Thanks for the response. I'll try those tweaks asap and let you know what I find.

3 years ago your statements might have been true pertaining to the AMD chips. But as of lately Intel is the clear leader in all the categories. Check out the benchmarks on tomshardware for a general idea of how well the Intel CPU's handle 3D graphics. Everybody knows that the Vanguard engine is pretty complex and will take a while to get it optimized. Especially with a much smaller dev team as it is now.
As far as Vanguard, some peole are unaware that Sigil took the Unreal engine and basically turned it upside down and recreated it for their own purposes. Sony has done a good job picking up the pieces and improving this game.
Good luck and PEACE!!

First of all... your previous comment that "Pentium has worse 3D calculations than AMD cpus... " might be correct. But Intel hasn't used the Pentium architecture in 3 years. The new Core 2 Duo architecture completely destroys anything AMD has to offer. Case in point... AMD is losing market share by the second. Intel definately has the performance advantage as this point.

I prefer AMD for a simple reason: they are the only ones left to put Intel under any pressure of concurrence. So if AMD is gone, we would be completely dependent upon Intel, and thats what nobody wants, or should want.
Other than that, yes sometimes Intel is in the advantage, sometimes AMD is in the advantage. Just like nVidia and ATI. I dont really care so much about the details there.
