I've been researching WAR for some time now, not in beta, but just looking at the web like the rest of you, and I think it will probably (85% chance) be a great game. I base this on the following observations:
1) Realm-vs-Realm - provides meaningful PVP while allowing PVE folks to do their own thing. Everyone wins here.
2) PVP element creates a certain element of wariness or dread. You are never bored when you are wary or anticipating something. This means an element of excitement.
3) Graphics look cool enough without appearing to be able to break our computers.
4) Classes look pretty good. (Although it took me awhile to get used to some of the names. Guess I'm a traditionalist.)
5) Instancing is minimized and used only when necessary.
6) There appears to be ample freedom in gameplay (i.e., no handing us our scripts and telling us to follow our cues.)
7) World zones look intriguing.
8) Mythic has one very polished game to their track record (DAOC), so I expect the same consistency when they put out this game.
9) Blizzard "appears" to be holding off their expansion for WOW to time with this game's release. They wouldn't do that for a second string game.
I just have a good feeling about this game.

Yeah I get that feeling as well. It's just a suspicion, but the more time goes on the more it looks to be the case. Before they released TBC expansion for WoW they spoke about putting out new expansions no less than one year apart at the latest...and now how long has it been? One year and 6 months, and the WotLK is still nowhere to be found.
I'll be surprised if they don't drop WotlK on us directly before/after WaR comes out. Personally I don't care though I know which title I'll be playing. Hrm...expand my roster of 70's in wow that have been gathering dust for months to play maybe one more battleground or go grind some more or jump headfirst into a game that interests me infinitely more than the Warcraft franchise ever could.
But for those riding the fence I'm sure the coincedence of the timing to release WotlK will be the deciding factor not to pick up WaR and stick with WoW. But that content will get stale after awhile and when people start looking for something else other than the same old endless grind they've been on for years then they can come visit us in WaR...although they'll be behind by a few months by then and everyone knows all the real greatness comes during the first few months of a games lifespan as far as "the good old days" are always reminisced about.
Players that jumped into WoW late will never experience world PvP or the battle for Hillsbrad/TM/Westfall like those of us that played from launch. The game was different then, better...and I hope that WaR will capture that *feeling* that WoW had before things changed. Hopefully. I can see that happening in this game as far as all out crazy-ass world pvp is concerned, except this time with purpose since you can build your character up around that playstyle. Those are my thoughts, just from what I've seen so far. Time will tell.
I hope its great, but I'm not going to act all fanboi.
game is still not out yet. im looking forward to it. but for all we know this could be another vanguard
Good to see some reasonable expectations. Looking at other forums you'd think their games are the next best thing since sliced bread and will
'Change the online game genre FOREVER' (echoing voice).
It's refreshing to see people who remember the past and take the lessons of games like Vanguard, Dark and Light and Gods and Heroes and not completely buy into the hype.
That said, WAR has more goign for it than most games IMO. Making a good MMORPG is only half the job, though, and customer support and network servicing are the other half. we won't see that until the game is released.
whoa whoa whoa whoa....whoa......whoa
what?
One problem with this, Mythic wouldn't release a Vanguard.

Horses don't say what after you tell em to whoa, but it'd be cool of they did!
I think people are ready for something that plays as good as WoW, but is more advanced and has more features. WoW is good for what it is, but it gets really old. I'm stoked for this game.

DAOC had a bad release. so they could do it againDAoC had a very smooth launch if I remember correctly. They had no game-breaking flaws whatsoever.
Only a few minor ones that are to be expected with releasing a game.
(A couple of holes in the ground, but they were great for recalling)

DAoC is still my favorite MMO to come out yet. Albeit, it's out of date now, but when it launched, it was spectacular. That, and Shadowbane was amazing. Something about building a city to have it destroyed in a real battle, is awesome.
Therefor, I am expecting this game to be no less exciting as DAoC, afterall, it is made by the same people.
When I see ex-DAoC players mention the DAoC launch, they generally refer to it as one of the smoothest, if not the smoothest, MMO launch they've seen (didn't play it at launch myself, though).
I don't think wotlk will be released till Jan 2009, they still have to start season 4 yet and have that run for 6 months.
Plenty of time to get into WAR till then, unless the launch gets delayed.

DAOC had a bad release. so they could do it again? bad release? you sure you weren't playing on a freeshard?

Probably depends how you look at it.
Stable? One of the stablest launches I've ever had. However, it was definately not bug free and there was a lot of content lacking.
That may seem easy but if that happened now I'd not be as forgiving anymore. Back then I couldn't have cared less, BUT, I didn' t know any better back then.
There is always going to be bug at launch, hell there are bugs in every game you will ever play. No game is bug free. it is the degree of bugs. And i can't remember any huge bugs. Content I had no complaints. If i remember right albion had the most content at launch, followed by midgard, and then hibernia . That is all a cause of how they did there dev. they worked on albion, then midgard, and finally hibernia. and then they ran out of money and released the game.
But still they had a smooth launch with just around 1.5-2years of dev time.
JMHO , WoW should release their expansion before WAR go's live .
i wish i could go into detail on this .( NDA )
if every thing Mythic has planned for WAR works , classes and realms are fairly balanced , bugs squashed ... Blizzard wont have much interest in their expansion .
Like I said, that's not a state I'd put with anymore. And ofcourse I mean "extent" of bugs rather than no bugs at all. If you never experienced falling through the world you didn't play at release or certainly not as a Hibernian.
As for lacking content. Unitemized dungeons = me looking for next game.
