Idea: Smoking and Drinking animations...and filter

Coming from a Tolkienesque angle, I sort of want my future Dwarven Hammerer to be a curmudgeon who, when not fighting, grumbles, drinks ale, and puffs on a pipe.  Just an image I have.

Now, I know a lot of minors will play this game and that images of smoking and drinking might become controversial.  Can not there be a filter for being able to view these actions, not unlike the filter for curse words?

Maybe the default is that the filter is already on, and it takes a pop-up screen take takes your birthdate or something to turn it off.

Thoughts?

    I think it's rediculous.

No, not your idea.  Your idea is great, and would add flavor to the game.  I think it's rediculous that the ESRB, the media, and other organizations have absolutely no problem with a game that revolves around killing fellow players, one that frequently shows graphic blood and violence, and rewards you for butchering your opponent... but when it comes to smoking or drinking "we have to think of the children."

Put it in the game, it'll add flavor.  If parents don't like it, don't let your kids play it.

ESBR is really a joke. as LordAiden says, blood, gore, killing random ppl in games is nothing to worry about.... ehm.... but smoke and beer is ? i doubt that some kids will start smoking or drinking just because they have seen it in a game. If it was the case, why arent there more random killing going on (besided in America haha) we really need ppl to start opening their eyes, and stop the moral bitching. kidst today know, that there is a huge difference between the virual and the real world, end of story.

I would really enjoy a game, where you could smoke, drink, and do whatever you can do in the real world. it just makes the game feel more "real". take for exaple good old fallout2. you could become a pornstart, proboxer, selling slaves, become an addict etc.

Well since you generalised "America" I guess we can include Canada, Mexico and hell we might as well throw in South America too. Guess what, random killing just doesn't happen in America.

Back on topic. They will most likely have drinking in the game, not sure about smoking though.

Tobacco and alcohol use are allowed in a Teen rated game. LotRO not only has animations for smoking and drinking, but there are crafting skills for each. There is no need for a filter or any other restrictions.

This is taken from the March 08 newsletter:

    Sample Quests, Rewards and Titles:

Quest: The Only Way to Fight

Type: Dwarf / PvE (Open to characters allied with the Realm of Order.)

"Anyone can drink and anyone can fight, but only a Dwarf was born t' do both! Are you ready t' prove what kind of Dwarf ye are? Take a proper drink o' this Chuffinbrau, for it'll get ye nice and tight, then get t' killin’ greenskins before you sober up!"

Reward: Furd’s Bottomless Mug. This ale stein is encrusted with a special rune to ensure it never goes empty. One swig of its brew and you’ll feel stronger and ready for a fight. Beware, this sense of power comes at a cost!

So for sure there is definately going to be alcohol themed content available in game :)

yes but that will (just my opinion) taken like a potion..

where the OP is comming from is why i LOVE LOTRO    the role play elements of it ...i could just sit there all day playing my lute, smoking my pipe and talking to great people....somethings that are hard to come by in MMOs today...

I would love it     ...but i don't think my chaos has smoking quite down yet ...he just can't grip it with his claw

Yeah, Id love to have rp elements like these. Parents need to stop letting the tv/computer/government schools raise their kids.

ESRB also needs to stop being hypocritical about "thinking for the children" ...which is ultimately just a political tool they use to get their way with more control. >.>

This would definitely add more flavor to the game.  I would like to see it added as well if they haven't already thought about it.

I'm not sure what country you live in but there are plenty of random killings in America every day dude.  You must not watch the news much...but Random killings happen everywhere not just here in the US so I understand what you were thinking.

On topic I think it'd be great for role players but I'm gathering from what the dev's say they're not to focus'd on the role playing part...Lord of the Rings is definitly going to remain top dog in that department its awsome the RPG stuff they have in.   Hopefully if we're lucky someone can convince the WAR devs to give us more emote possiblities for RP.  I suspect though they'd have to make different emotes for every race I hardly doubt I'd see chaos doing much else other than killing and playing with dead body parts.

Always better to have the kids inside and at the computer, getting drunk online.

Safer than going out, driving under the influence and getting themselves killed.

You can't /yell Res please! after you've crashed your car into a semi.

    STOP WHINING!

Uh, I guess you meant to quote the other guy instead of me? Because I missed the part where I said it didn't happen in the US. So uh, thanks for repeating what I said?

Haha, no you can't but it would make for a good conversation piece. . ."Did you see that guy get hit by the semi?" "Sure did and he yelled "REZ PLEASE!" just before the ambulance arrived."

Grammatically you Did say that it doesnt' happen in America.  Just Doesn't Happen in America means a completely different thing than Random killings don't happen in just America.

So I was right in replying & quoting you my friend :) but since it seems to be just a grammatical typo its all good misunderstandings happen often on forums.

Ah, I see. Yeah I tend to make small errors like that and not notice them >.>

in gaming terms I haven't read about one killing or death in America directly related to gaming. Politicians try to point the finger but it never sticks.

Now in some Asian countries they have people starving themselves to death playing games and killing each other over it. So don't lump the US as the only country that has random violence, each and every country has it.

If there is a country without random violence please let us know.

  • elvenangelelvenangel Member Posts: 2,205

oh yea *notices the ESRB comments*  adding smoking & drinking doesn't get you a mature rating even in the US unless its gratitious (as in happens alot and its required for certain necessary gameplay mechanics).   It does get added to the list of warnings for Teen content though.    I do think its funny when uppity parents think kids learn to smoke & drink from movies & games when they really learn it from hanging out with certain friends and being unable to think for themselves or they just don't care (rebelliousness).

Hell when I was a teenager i only smoked a few times just to piss off my parents and they honestly didnt' care if i went somewhere and Drank as long as I called them and Told them first & i promised not to drive anywhere.   It took the fun out of it ...so needless to say I never got into either activity for more than short periods lol.  My parents had the give them some space to make decisions but if you mess up you get punished lol.

Im sorry, I know you meant well by that comment but its just not even what I was meaning. Theres a difference between parenting and sticking your kid in front of a computer/tv for 12 hours a day to keep them occupied so that they dont go out and get killed or whatever.

Its what parents did before the government started trying to raise our kids for us...
