Last MMO i played was WoW from it's released before that EQ stopped shortly after Omens of War expansion.

So far in LotR I have a level 6 guardian and level 4 minstrel. The game seems pretty good but is this a real MMO? I was kinda disappointed that after I finished my newbie quest that i was sent to an instance which was okay then sent back to the same map of the gaming world but it's a different zone or instance. In a way it's cool because it makes it seem as the gaming world is involving but on the other hand so far it seems i haven't been in a real MMO gaming world and despite a few people i passed on the way when doing Quest this game has a very single player feel to it.

grant it i'm only level 6.

Also compared to WoW the combat animation isn't that good it's almost identical to EQ and the fights take too long, i mean how many slashes and stabs can a piglet take before it kills over? apparently about 50. the graphic engine is about the same or maybe a little more advance then WoW but the artwork fails in comparison.

With that said pls remember i'm only lev 6 in the game. So where will this game take me? I had a sparring match which was fun is there any decent pvp down the road? Raiding, grouping, the economy, what's the level cap?

Overall i know i gave this game some crappy reviews but it still holding my interest so it cant be all that bad.

First of all you are only level 6. Once you get to bree you will see tons of people. Only the starter areas until you finish the prologue are in a seperate instance so you will only see new players. But if you keep moving along you will encounter everyone.

You are a guardian so things will take longer to kill then compared to like a champ or hunter

On the graphics side I would have to heartily disagree with that. LOTRO's gfx are far supierior to wow and the best I have seen in an mmo. The art style is going to be more realistic becasue this is low-fanatsy not high-fantasy like WoW.

Hope you trudge on it gets better as you go.

As said - there is a short single player tutorial, then a newbie zone separate from the rest of the game world, and finally you are out in the main game world which is the same as a traditional MMO.

It is fully possible to solo to max level by questing - so you may not see a lot of groups forming all the time, but that said - strict soloists will miss some interesting group dungeons (about every 10 levels there is one).

Perhaps on the lowest settings WoW and Lotro are similar, but realistically LOTRO is much more detailed and smooth.  Take a careful look at high settings screenshots from both side-by-side and you should see the differences.  The art style might be what you're seeing - where WoW is very cartoon-like (bright colours, etc) LOTRO tries for a more realistic palette (as does EQ2).

PvP in the game is strictly kept to one zone where free peoples (your main character) fight against monster players (essentially alt characters of other free peoples).  There is no PvP between free people outside of duels.  Whether it's decent PvP is a matter of conjecture - but generally hard-core PvP players don't like it much.

Level cap is currently 50, rising to 60 with an expansion near the end of the year.  There are a number of high-level instances (for groups of 3-6) and two raids for groups of 24 (I think I've got that right anyway).  They're also not for the hard-core - it's not a raiding game really.

The economy is dubious.  There is crafting and some of the stuff is in demand, but more of it is bettered by items you get from questing.  It's a side game for the most part - but enjoyed by some.

Basically - the game is enjoyable as long as you stay behind the dev team's development curve.  For those that cap out it generally loses some enjoyment value as there is less to do.  As long as you approach the game from a casual mindset it's pretty interesting and well-put-together.

If you're by nature a hard-core player (up to you to decide if you are) I'd suggest having LOTRO as a secondary MMO that you don't play all the time, but one where you "vacation" when tired of your main MMO.

OMg the game doesn't even start till lvl 6 !!! If ya want a challenge try a Loremaster and come back here and post your thoughts around lvl 20 or so ...I guarantee you will have a totally different opinion. Granted the game seems kinda "drab" at first but it has a tendancy to slowly draw you into it. Before long it will be calling you from your sleep time dreams to get up and log in! The chat will seem kinda dead but that's just because everyone is either chatting with thier guild, in groups, or using the game's built in voice chat.Welcome to your new obsession!

Oh BTW if you're looking for something that will really blow your mind, take everything you thought you knew about MMO's and toss them out the window and try Lineage II!

I dont know if they are paid employees that do that or just obessed gamers although i may be considered at one time as one of the two i'm def not either anymore.

I really wasn't trying to knock the game i think it has potential I just didn't want to get too far involved before realizing that the game lacks in too many places. I like the positive responses about the game and it makes me look forward to playing it more.

I enjoy WoW pvp the battlegrounds etc so i'll miss that but it's not the only thing i enjoy.

oh as for graphic settings i keep them low so that maybe why i don't see the graphics being better.

anyways thanks for the advice i'm going to play some more tonight.

After the tutorial area, the adventure questing world is seamless like WoW, except for zoning into buildings(housing, AH, crafting, etc), instances and raids, and PvMP zone Ettenmoors.

Yep, a lot of people agreed with that sentiment when the game launched. I wish they would speed it up a little.  Not everyone will like the same artwork.

Eriador only, until they release expansions. http://www.glyphweb.com/ARDA/e/eriador.html  So this means, Bree, Shire, Angmar, Lone-Lands, Rivendell, Misty Mountains, Weathertop, etc.
I had a sparring match which was fun is there any decent pvp down the road? Raiding, grouping, the economy, what's the level cap?

Sparring is really lame in this game.
PvMP is restricted to one zone currently, called Ettenmoors. Freeps, aka Free Peoples, can enter at lvl 40 minimum. Creeps (orcs, wargs, spiders, uruks) can be created once you get a lvl 10 Freep first, and get to start at lvl 50 already, but you have to earn Infamy to build up his rank, in order to buy upgrades like skills and traits, etc.
Raiding: Only 1 major raid, The Rift, and an abandoned one called Helegrod. There's also outside raids too, and several in PvMP Ettenmoors.
Grouping and Economy same as other MMOs.
    Level cap = 50

Overall i know i gave this game some crappy reviews but it still holding my interest so it cant be all that bad.

I played for several months at level 50 as a captain, and had a blast, only because i was in a good guild with great people.  So if you do decide to play, just join a guild right away so it doesn't get lonely.

graphics close to wow? are you joking

  • DeaWelshDeaWelsh Member CommonPosts: 34

The graphics are wonderful.  I tried the WoW trial and couldn't get past the cartoon atmosphrere to even try the game long.  I like the realizm more.

They're right about the game not really starting until level 6.  I actually find it kind of soothing to play the lower levels, so I have many characters in progress, trying different classes and races.

Granted, I'm a solo player that sometimes joins a group, but not often.  And I hate PvP personally.  All MMO's can't be alike, and someone had a good suggestion.  Use LOTRO as your secondary MMO if you prefer, but keep playing.  It's addictive.

You can't play this game and expect "WoW".

It is a casual game like WoW and the interface is similar but it's not WoW. Also, if you have a guardian, then as others have said, it iwll take you longer to kill things. The upside is you will get a stance that will allow more damage.

It's more story based but you can "opt out" of the book quests if you want.

As far as the graphics go if you have them on low then of course they are not going to be great. I have them on max and I can attest that they are amazing. This is not to say there aren't artistic issues as not everything is artistically satisfying. a lot of the armor and even weapons leave something to be desired. The way they've done the hair is a bit "bad". Quite frankly, whoever is in charge of creating characters needs to be fired in my opinion. Same with armor.

I would recommend a couple things for you like others have said.

First, don't play a guardian, it sounds like what you want is a champion, and if you want to be more defensive oriented you can wield a shield and use different traits.

Second, level up to around 15-20 range which doesn't take that long.   You will get a much better feel for your class and the game at that point and really know if its your cup of tea.

Yes I do have to agree, the characters themselves do have a lot to be desired there's just something about the customization the bugs me. It is almost like the characters don't really seem to fit in the artstyle of the overall game. Yeah they need to def fire the guy in charge of characters!

Definitely stop playing guardian, they are boring for leveling.  Captain coming in 2nd after them.  I'd go with Burglar, Hunter, or Champion.  Personally, i'd choose champion, always wanted to max one out.
