Help for a (possibly) returning SWG vet...

DinoonDinoon Member Posts: 7

Alright, first a little bit of my backstory.... about a year ago I played SWG. Some of you might recognize my name, either from the forums or maybe on Corbantis, or you might have seen "Capt'Din" on Starsider... that was me. But probably not. Anyway, I had played for about 2 1/2 years (might be more, I forgot now...) I was really getting tired of the NGE, not so much the game itself, but my server, Corbantis, was almost totally dead. So, even though I had to say goodbye to the awesome people I met there, I decided it'd be best to transfer away from Corbantis, whose population always said "Light", to Starsider, one of the few servers left that still said "medium". The game was more enjoyable, and I was finding new life in the game.

But then something totally stupid happened... I was banned due to some issue regarding a chargeback.  I put in a report to SOE's customer "service".  Eventually, I got a reply that sounded like it came from an actual person. They said that they could unban the account, but they wanted a fee of $40! By that time, I was too busy with real life stuff to play SWG that much, and I didn't feel like dishing out $40. So I decided, "You know what? Forget it. I'll just resubscribe later."

Well, now, my brother bought that Star Wars: Best of PC thing, and it came with a free trial to SWG. So, I thought, cool, I can take a look at what the game is like now. I activated the trial and all that, but now I've got a problem. When i try to do that update thing that launchpad always does when you install SWG for the first time, I get an error message: "Internet download error. Please check your Internet connection and try again."

Now, I should mention that I am running a new computer with Vista on it now, and back when I played SWG it was on an XP PC. I'm thinking that this may be the problem, but I actually think that the real problem lies with my Internet connection. See, once and a while, my Internet connection just kind of... cuts off. For no real reason that I can see. If I wait a few minutes, or sometimes unplug the modem and plug it back in, it usually starts back up again. I used to think this was a browser issue or something, but I think that the problem is actually related to the modem. Like, I think it has a short in it or something. Either that, or the phone jack it's plugged into is messing up, or the jack on my PC or the modem might be... I don't know what to do. I've wasted almost half of my free trial at this point, which kind of pisses me off, but I was planning on resubscribing anyway, so I have to figure this out.

A couple of other things, first, is my account still there? I know that sometimes they delete accounts, but I knew a couple of people who were gone for years and came back with their original characters. But then again, they were never banned...

Also, one other thing. For anyone who is currently playing, I'm kind of curious how things have changed in the last year. I've been watching the official forums, and I see they've added a bit of space content, which I have always enjoyed. (In fact, that was about the only silver lining I saw when the NGE first launched.) And all this "Heroic Encounter" stuff looks kind of cool. I remember that by the time I "left", the game was, in my opinion, MUCH better than when the NGE first launched. Of course, it was nowhere near the complexity of pre-NGE, but it was a hell of a lot better. I mean, my mind is set, I'll at least play it over the summer, just to see how it is, but I'm just kind of curious.

So, that's pretty much it. I don't know how active this board is, but it seems like my best shot at getting some help...

hi a lot of people have problems with this anyhow here is the link and it works this way consistently I am told so the instructions are correct :)

    http://help.station.sony.com/cgi-bin/soe.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1812

Others have issues but usually it asks for a second disk or something so i'm not sure if this is the same problem or not

    Star Wars Galaxies

    1. Install Launchpad if you don't have it already, http://patch.station.sony.com:7000/patch/launchpad/Install_LaunchPad.exe

    2. Go to your Launchpad folder, C:Program FilesSonyStationLaunchpad. Right click on launchpad.exe and choose send to --> desktop.

    3. Next, create a folder in C:Program Files called Star Wars Galaxies

    4. Go to your desktop, right click on that icon and choose properties.

    5. In the target box, enter this exactly with quotes and all: "C:Program FilesSonyStationLaunchpadLaunchpad.exe" /game:starwars

    6. In the Start in box, put this in, quotes and all: "C:Program FilesStar Wars Galaxies"

    7. Click on Apply, then Close.

    8. Double-click the icon and the game will download.

anyhow that info is taken from the first link so i would start fresh and see what happens :)

content - actually a lot is being done that is newish

the space this is one thing plus there is a game update (err i think that is what its called me i just see the content forget about names) where they have various instances and collections added etc.   Plus they are revamping weaponsmith and have balanced out some of the careers.   The next content update with contain a heroic instance on Hoth.   They added a bunch of new spaceships too (my favourite is actually space right now too)

I tried all that... it's still not downloading. It starts to download, then below the progress bar, it says" Download Cancelled". I don't get it. I've never had this happen before.

Oh yeah, I should mention that when I "lose" my Internet connection, all the lights on my modem are lit up appropriately, as if there should be no connection problems, but there are... I'll be browsing the Internet and out of nowhere, when I click a link or something, my browser, Firefox, will go to a page saying "Server not found. Could not establish a connection with bla bla bla..."

maybe someone will have more info .  Does look to me like something is being purposely stopped or something on one end or another.   I have an "extreme" cable internet package with unlimited everything so I had no issues downloading from sony.  I have heard complaints or seen them taking ages for others though and I"m not sure why.    I know that there are some modem models that have issues with the downloads but I'm not sure what they are.  I saw the list somewhere I jsut can't remember where right now.

I'm also assuming you have al your firewalls and antivirus stuff off but i know if my antivirus kicks in for an update and i dont notice it that when it turns on I do get a disconnect and have to turn it off in the running processes and restart the game.   Sony's games hate any kind of anti virus program it seems.

Well, I'm running AT&T/Bellsouth DSL, my modem suggests nothing is wrong, but I think I've got a serious problem with my Internet connection. I'm going to call my ISP customer service tomorrow and see if they can do anything. Another theory I had was my antivirus software was the problem, but even when I turn it completely off, I still have connection problems. So, as can be seen, I'm certain that my problem with my web browser and my problem with SWG are caused by the same thing... I just can't find out what's going on... by the way, my antivirus is Kapersky 7.0.

Because Vista considers SWG to be a "legacy" program (as it does 99% of programs made before it), SWG nor Launchpad are permitted to modify the Programs Files folder without gaining elevated privleges, which is what's causing your issue.

It's rather easy to fix (assuming this is the problem).  Right click your SWG icon and click the "Run as Admin" option in the menu.  Alternatively, to prevent having to do that everytime there's an update, right click the SWG icon, click Properties, go to the Compatibility tab and check the box "Run as Admin".

Hey, I think that worked! Thanks, Obraik. I can't believe I didn't think of that myself. I've had this problem with other programs, so I should have thought of it earlier...

So far, Vista doesn't seem as bad as people say (I've only had this PC for about 6 months so far) but all this "administrator" crap is SO ANNOYING...

  • DinoonDinoon Member Posts: 7

Well, at least it kind of worked. It did start downloading, but then it stopped. So, I opened a web browser window, and of course, it told me I wasn't connected to the Internet. So, my Internet connection problems still need to be attended to... I'm about to call my ISP...

Im having a similar problem. Except i use XP and my internet is fine. I just get a Network Error when i click on my SWG icon.

I had this problem last year , I constantly had to hit repair on my connection to get it to work .  The problem persisted until I reinstalled windows .Comcast (my isp) never had an answer to my problem.

I called my ISP, and it sounded like they figured out what the problem was, and adjusted something on their end, and for a while, my Internet was fine. Then it started messing up again. I can get onto SWG now, as the Internet was working long enough to download the update, but I get unbelievably bad speech lag. I'll type something into chat and it won't show up for up to 10 minutes... don't know what else to do but call my ISP again.

  • ummaxummax Member Posts: 779

err this sounds like you hardly have any bandwidht.  I haven't ever gotten speech lag except when there were like 100 + people in the area at the pex bash event.  I dont know how much bandwidth you have so I can't really comment also maybe your ping is really really high not sure.  (i knew someone who was living out in the boonies who played with some crazy ping over 1000 for a year until they moved and have no idea how they kept playing but they did) Try a few severs with different "distances" etc and see if that helps but chat lag doesn't happen.  I have seen friends complain of rubber banding but since my return I have not seen it to be honest, but in guild chat they complain about it from time to time.

Well, I've been playing a bit, and I'm not having any problems now... even though I'm still having problems with Internet browsing, but that's not THAT big of a deal. In any event, there's a technician coming to my house tomorrow, so it's of no consequence.

  • MoiraeMoirae Member RarePosts: 3,318

I worked for Comcast as an Internet technician.

If the modem itself is shutting off and rebooting, its your  modem.

If your modem isn't doing that, it means there's something wrong with either your computer, or the lines in your house/outside yourself.

Get your computer checked first (you could have a faulty nic card), get new ethernet lines that run from your computer to your modem.

If it still happens, its something you have no control of and you should call an internet technician to come over to your house to look at your lines.
