So.. last night as I was RPing in EQ2, I had this idea sparked by the conversation...
Devs always put in grinding for levels either to make the content last longer, or to disguise thefact that there really isnt diddly to do in the game except level up and dailies... and then only dailies. xD So I have this genious idea for getting rid of level grinding.
Make putting on your armour realistic. Plate armour would take over an hour to put on, chain minutes less. Leather and cloth only thirty minutes at most.
For repairing your armour and weaponry, that would be realistic too. The more complex the armour/weaponry, the longer it takes to repair.
Bladed weapons would need sharpening, crushing weapons would need... dulling.
You could still buy regular arrows and bolts from the town merchants, but for enchanted arrows or high quality youd have to go to crafter, or a large city. Small towns wouldnt likely have an arcanist to make flaming arrows.
Drunkeness would actually make you more stupid, and less able to cast spells.
Ok so this really doesnt have anything to do with Warhammer... but I thought you guys could use the amusement. ^.^

I think you're doing it half way...
What about sleeping? That's a nice fat 8 hr timesink for every 24 hours online.
Let's get wicked and make it a mini-game, say you have to clickety-click to avoid falling off a bed. And if you don't get enough sleep you get all kinds of nasty debuffs.

Dont forget food. You need to cook it, eat it, and well umm. . .get rid of it. Also your an adventurer so that eight ounces of water a day is not going to cut it. Be prepared to carry around a Culligan water cooler on your back.

Leveling up IS the game. If you don't like doing what you have to do to level up, you don't like the game.
The people who like the game are not "grinding." They are "playing."
Read the disclaimer in the first post. . .

I disagree. You can like part of the game and still dislike some aspects of it. I personally dislike leveling it. It seems like a waste of my time.
Also, I forgot about something:
People wearing chainmain and heavier will have to drag around a paige or squire. A scribe I suppose will work. So that means you have to not only pay for food and lodging for yourself, but a bratty kid as well.
And... mounts. No longer will we have to "fondle the invisible giant" like the way it used to be in Lotro. No, instead, you have to drag around the horse everywhere! Stabling it in town, and feeding it... and protecting it from being the lunch of orks and goblins.
And with that, I just tied it into Warhammer. hehe
Oh man i have to say making puting on your armor a time sink = worst idea i've seen in a LONG time, can see it now, "i get home from work & have maybe 2hrs to play so i jump on & have to spend half that time just puting on armor?" not good, i think it would be better to even slow xp gain down more then it is now. No armor/weapon time sinks are a REALLY BAD idea.
P.S. HEHEHE ok if its sadistic humor, then you got it right on Lol
Apparently no one has bothered reading the disclaimer (except for the first few), so I changed the font and text size... geez. If you guys thought this was a serious suggestions you either take gaming way to seriously, or... I dunno. Im kinda at a loss for words there. xD
Changed the colour too. lol
The funny thing is thoes people still wouldnt get it Kitsune I applaud you though, I got a kick out of it Hell putting it that way makes the level grinding look like candyland
Oh this idea rocks....in many 1P RPGs your horse stays with you and u gotta protect it or it dies then your on foot when you run into mobs! I think that would be a neat option to add to an MMO. Just allow being able to tie up your horse to any tree or rock when you get to an area of mobs you wanna kill or whatnot.
Course then you gotta worry about being able to handle that many more chars{horses} on screen all the time...blah
Face it Kitsunegirl, very few ever read the OPs Topic, and I wonder how many even understand them when they do...hehe
Yeah I actually think having your mount with you at all times is the one thing from this joke Id actually like. It could be like a hunter pet from Warcrack. You feed it occaissionaly, stable it when in town, keep it from dying out in the field. But I dont think you should have to buy a new one if it does. Perhaps you just go back to the horse merchant and get it res'ed or something.
Isn't that kind of like saying "Going to work every day IS life" or something? When in reality, work is just one of the nasty parts of getting by day to day? Slaying a few corporate dragons, then you have the more leisurely thing in life to sink time, like mini-game such as MMOs?
Ya know, I would actually like to see facets of some of these things put into a game. Though you say it humorously and in jest, I would enjoy having a game that actually takes a few seconds to put on armor. Would kill some of the armor swapping for a wuick cast spell associated with some gear. I am all for stable fees. Cut the exorbitant cost of the actual mount and offset it by a maintenance of stables. There is actual merit to some of the ideas.
*nods* I know... I guess thats why some people took it seriously, even if they did read the disclaimer. O.o I also like the armour and weapon repair ideas. Maybe not take a super long time, but just running up to a mender and clicking repair seems to me to be kinda useless. Why put it in at all if it takes that little time? Have a cast timer of 60 second instead.
I did read the disclaimer, but I am answering seriously. I think the early MMORPG's such as UO were attempts at simulating a world, and therefore had players spend more time on mundane tasks.
Over time, developers, probably at players behest removed most of that, leaving only fragments of the formal activities.
Hence, eating, crafting, repairing armor are all short, 15 second annoyances that pay lip service to what they used to represent.
I'm not sure this has been good for the genre. Sure, it focuses everything on the "fun" activities, but on the other hand, as with every thing in life, too much fun begins to get stale.
Just waxing nostalgic I guess for an era gone by, but it sure would be nice to get a new game that was more of a world simulation and less of a game.
(and no, I don't want to spend an hour putting on my armor, but a minute or so wouldn't be bad)

When playing a video game becomes work or too close to real life most people would become irritated and move on. Because lets face it, some of the things that have been said in the earlier posts (while fun to joke around about) would not appeal to a lot of people

I expect PvE in this game to be the same as DAoC, unimportant and simply there to give an option.
i once played Shadowbane & in that game the armor repairs were HUGE & if something broke it was gone forever, i knew some players that had top end gear & then in 1 night of raiding lost everything months of work, thats why i reacted hard, this type of thing just caused to much hardship & now shadowbane is a dead game. got to keep the players happy best you can or they stop paying, nowdays there are so many MMO's ppl leave a game at the drop of a pin...
Mmmm, i think it should be taken one step further. Who ever heard of having your life taken, and then given back again? Rezzing should be taken out. If you die, you are dead! Take MMOs back to hardcore Diablo 2 style.
Also, magic or not, if you take a battle axe to the face than you are going to be in pain. Even if some healer magically mends your body, you should still be in shock for no less than a few hours.
All male characters should be required to take a crap twice daily, and the timing should always be at the worst possible moment. In the middle of fighting a dragon? BAM, ya gotta go crap. If you wait longer than 30 seconds after realizing you need to crap, than you must take your armor off completely and wash it before going back out to battle. Female characters should not, as everyone knows females do not poop (at least I like to tell myself that). However, females should get a buff for one week out of every month where they gain +50% melee damage, -10% run speed, incapacitating stun effects every few hours for 30 seconds, and they gain a new ability called "NAG", where they cause enemies to commit suicide. This ability can be used as often as desired.
Mmmm, thats all for now.

And there was no underlying arguement, that would require me to have posted this thread seriously.
How about each player had a Felix around to carry the big Tome of Knowledge, and unlocked stuff for you.
You step into the next zone, and Felix says: "Wait a minute, i have to write down something". 10 minutes later he says: "Ok, we can go now".
Everytime I see the name Gotrex, I read it as Gortex... which is a type of shoe. lol
Players should be able to punt goblins at will, regardless of faction. 2 second cast. I demand my goblin field goal tournament.
Gore-tex is a fabric silly.
