My view after playing for 3 hours

Hello everyone.

I was an avid EQ1 player, and ever since I left after the expansion PoP, I've always wanted that EQ1 feeling again. I went to EQ2 and was disappointed, when back to EQ1 and was disappointed. I heard that Vanguard is suppose to be what EQ2 should have been, so I decided to grab a buddy key and check it out.

I'm surprised to say that, on generally HIGH graphic settings, my computer that I got for $300 ran very well. Zero framerate lag, although, in some areas, there were breaks in the frames for loads, which I expected.

The animations were good for the most part. The combat was fairly smooth, yet not as smooth as WoW's, but much better than EQ2s. The jump and walk animations need improving, though.

During my 3 hour rampage as an orc ranger, I only came across two other people, which disappointed me. I'll log on again later tonight and hope that a more 'primetime' hour will yield more players. Anyways, I greeted them both. Only one replied and when I asked the one who did reply if they wanted to group, I received no reply.

The chat channels were completely, utterly empty. No one was talking.

The quests were, honestly, really lame. "Go here, kill that, oh, and here is some information that you really don't need to know but it makes it look like we put effort into making this quest; which, by the way, does not add to the main, over arching story in the first place." That sounds rather harsh, ignorant, and ventful, but that is how I honestly felt while reading the quest logs and doing the quests.

Coming from a EQ1 background, I was hoping the critters would be tuffer than in EQ2. Nope. They were really, really easy. It was just me doing the same things over and over. Instead of killing rebel orcs, the quest giver would send me to kill some boars, then some flying bat-reptile things.

I have not looked into crafting yet. I did some quests for diplomacy. Interesting system, but why would you play VG for that? I mean, it is more like a card game built into a MMO with some quest  logs. However, if people enjoy it that much that it is still in the game, awesome. Was interesting, but was not for me in the long run.

So, I'll hop on Vanguard: Saga of Heroes later tonight. . . hopefully to have better luck.

Oh yes, I'll end with some questions:

Is the island I'm on a newbie island for the orcs? Is there a mainland? Can I get out of this place to get there? Also, are there 'quest givers' for crafting? I haven't seen any. I'll add this too... I've played Vanguard for nearly 3 hours and only got to level 7 or 8. That is pretty slow progression. The progression through the island is pretty slow too. I don't understand why the developers thought that was a good idea.

Blessings,

The game isn't fast, its not meant to be. Very confused that you find the quests kill this and that, as it has probably one of the best quests in all mmorpgs, as they are diverse, but you have only played 3 hours, your only in the starter town so seeing 2 ppl is quite good lol. Also that the chat was empty is quite unusuall but i'm not on the same continant, most ppl seem to be in Thestra. There are also alot of crafting quests, definatly at the start as it teaches you what you are doing and how, then at lvl 11 crafting you get a big quest to choose your skill.

The diplomacy has a purpose and is needed for guilds etc I believe to gain the land needed for the guild hall etc.

Can I ask what server you are on? As Seradon is known as the most popular.

Kojan is the least popular area, it supports quests etc upto level 20 and then you have to move to either Qalia or Thestra. The majority of the player base are on the other continents which supports content up to level cap, this is one of the reasons Kojan chat is empty.  Also Kojan was the continent with the least development time so I do agree some of the quests, content is average.  There is some gems in Kojan, the human and Half Elf races starter quest is one of the best in game.  Tomb of Lord Tsang is a great early dungeon to explore.  I will admit most of the quests in the game are your usual MMO fare, but there is a nice interesting story to VG's.

If you are fed up with Kojan and want to keep the Orc you can move to the other continents by the Riftways, only costs 50 copper in the 0-20 level range. To find the nearsest one to you make a macro and input the below. This will bring up the Riftway map.

    /togglewindow vanguards Riftway System

One of the things you will find on the other continents is loads of traffic in the continents chat, but also low population in certain newbie areas.  It's a big world with loads of starter areas all spread out.  Once you hit your teens you start to see more people.  You can use the riftways to get to the level appropriate quest hubs. Qa Riverbank on Qalia and Three Rvers and Veskals Exchange on Thestra are popular for the low to mid teens.

Crafting starts once you get to your races main city, depending on race it averages out around level 10 before you get to see the main city, some races the home city is next to them the first time they zone in.

Mobs will be getting difficult as you progress, at the moment you are battling trash mobs (2 dots).  It will not be long before you are fighting 3 dots. Even in the low levels if you dungeon explore you will be up against 4 dots and above.

Progression is slower in VG compared to most recent MMO's, but once you get out of your starter area there's loads to do and explore.  You will need a few alts to see all that VG has to offer.  In VG the journey is just as important as the destination.

Hope you find your next few hours more enjoyable m8

    Thanks for the replies everyone.

I ran into that railway gem in a forest and traveled to Tonav, and now am having some good fun. I have no idea where it took me, what I'm doing, or how really to get back, but at least I'm having some fun! Hah!

No, really. For some reason, I was having fun. No clue where I was - I was level 8 doing level 4ish quests, and I'm in an area that I have no idea where I am. But, hey, whatever works, right?

Anyways, if anyone wants to friend me, I'd love to get a stable group together.

    Blessings,
