These are two indispensable websites which will help you enjoy FFXI to it's fullest.

http://www.playonline.com/ff11newplayer/index.html?lang=en

These are video newbie guides that will show you all the basics of the game including chat, grouping, missions, quests, campaign, raising chocobos, etc. FFXI has a daunting learning curve that takes weeks to conquer. The game is unlike any other mmo and this guide will help you get into questing and combat right away!

http://www.ffxiclopedia.org

This is an encyclopedia of all the monsters, jobs, spells, quests, missions, areas, etc. of FFXI. It is absolutely a must-have because it covers those quests that are almost impossible to figure out. In addition it has player-made guides which show you the ins and outs of jobs, including good subjobs, where to level, when to level, what to wear at what times, etc. It is a very beneficial site to have.

I suggest everyone who is new and old bookmark both.

Thanks for the helpful post. I used to play this...oh...about four years ago and am currently not playing any MMORPG's at the moment and am looking to find something a bit more permanent that I will enjoy even playing leisurely. So, I may try FFXI, if I can find a friend pass that is.

In the meantime I am really liking the http://www.ffxiclopedia.org. It's helping me catch up a bit

    Thanks again!

Playing: Diablo 2, Medievia, SWG EMU
    In between: Eq Mac
Retired: Guild Wars (2x), EQ, DAoC, PSO, Tibia, Runescape, WoW, SWG, Maple Story
Waiting: WaR (hesitant), New Star Wars MMO

Well I think these are all very good with an exception of one. THIS IS A WARNING TO PEOPLE OUT THERE SO LISTEN. ffxi.somepage.com has been known to corrupt peoples system files allowing accounts to be stolen I don't know how this is done but I have heard it from many players so I would recommend not using it AT ALL. Plus it's a very outdated site and between allakhazam, killingifrit, and ffxiclopedia you won't need to use it at all. Pyogens is an awesome for grafting that is for sure also i would recommend:

    www.ffxi-ah.com

it has listings of all the prices on the AH in game for every server so it so good when researching what you want to buy or what you should craft for the maximum profit. It aslo has the air ship timers like pyogenes and will even show what characters have bought and sold whatever.

Thanks a lot for this.  The game definitely doesn't hold your hand like so many other MMOs, and leaves a lot up to the player to explore, but there is definitely the need for an in depth tutorial on the game.

I thought the controls would put me off, but so far it's actually refreshing and easy to get the hang of, even with a keyboard.  I never thought I'd play an MMO and not want to use the mouse, but with the style of the game it seems to work nicely.

I'm hoping the game stays fun, cause right now I'm pleasantly surprised about it, and I never gave it a second glance when it first came out.  Just didn't seem like my style of game. :)
