The folks at Star Wars Galaxies have posted a dev diary which looks the adition of puzzles to the process of gaining collections in Chapter 10.
Hello everyone! Jeff "Jaskell" Haskell back again. For this dev diary, I'd like to talk about creating the puzzles that are part of the new Meatlump theme park coming in Chapter 10.
In the past, some of the collectables as well as quest objects only required the player to click on an object to receive an update, so for Chapter 10 I wanted to try to switch things up a little by associating a simple puzzle with a few collection objects. Instead of just finding and clicking these objects, the player will initiate a custom UI that will require a certain amount of interaction to "win."
One particular puzzle/collection I would like to highlight for this diary is the Meatlump Bomb Defusing UI, as I think it is one of the more complex systems added in Chapter 10. In the beginning it started out with what would seem like a simple set of tasks. The puzzle design had the player cutting wires as the bomb timer was counting down. Unfortunately, no UI existed that would support wire cutting, so this gave me the excuse to learn the SWG UI builder to add a new UI that would. This turned out to be a significant challenge.

Love that Jestor ( unless you have been fooled by SOE)

i can't believe this is still around, oddly enough it's to little to late... not good to bite the hand that feeds you as some might say.
This is a joke right? Really wtf. I mean puzzles are alright in a game like Mass Effect to open somethings.
But in a MMO? I'm glad I left this game long ago.
StarGate Worlds will have puzzles. Personally, I think puzzles fit great in MMOs (particularly in StarGate Worlds). Puzzles are a staple of fantasy literature which MMOs were inspired by.
Until you cancel your subscription, you are only helping to continue the cycle of mediocrity.

Ok ..what is KotOR...it's an RPG...what MMORPG stands for?...Massively multiplayer online RPG so they are not that different ..and as long as it works to open doors i can't see why it couldn't work to loot some rare stuff from a wreck or a dead bot or something..they can say it's wired:D

"we want to make the game more Star Warsy and Iconic."
..thats all i have to say about that!!!!
people want puzzles! not to play a moisture farmer!! We want people to experience the puzzles they see in the movies!
Unfortinitly adding puzzles to the game is really going to throw the NGE fanboi's for a curve if pre NGE was too complex for them.
I heard Next publish will be learn your ABC's with Jar Jar
SOE Please stop beating it, it is dead already!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what a fu*ing waste of time.
Puzzles would actually be a nice addition to MMOs (it was done in UO with the purplish sludge looking critter, I don't ecall the name, but you needed some bandages and scissors after paralyzing it to extract some loot item). Unfortunately, puzzles added to SWG are a waste of time and effort, because the core game is poorly conceived and implemented. It does display the complete lack of competence that the SWG developers have decided to slap a puzzle system on top of their lame 'collection' grind system. Considering they lead designer, Toilet Boy, decided to slap buffs and debuffs on everything, once one of the developers discovered they could do it easily, I fully expect the vast majority of future 'collection' grinds to include the 'new' puzzle system.
Incorrect. There were atleast two puzzles I remember off the top of my head to loot in KotOR - one where you had to read the history of some band of musicians and activate holograms of the band members in the order they joined the band, and one where you had to answer some questions correctly based on what you found in a message to the owner of the chest.
Not that it matters - adding these features to SWG won't make the game good.
I tried these out on TC the other day. It's good that they've added something more to the clicky collections so there's a bit more involved with them then simply finding the objecting and waiting for the countdown to finish. I haven't yet figured out how they all work - the yeast one still has me a little stumped (something about shading and matching them up right...apparantly it's a bit like an old Village puzzle)
I'll give SoE credit for trying something different this time, but do these puzzles have a random element to them so that the outcome is not always the same? And is there loot that comes from completing the puzzle?

The yeast/food puzzle I was trying to do changed each time, or at least the shade of the boxes was different each time, I'm not sure if the end result was the same because I never got that far, heh. I'm pretty sure the bomb one changed each time too - the wire colours/order was different I think.
If you get the puzzle correct then what you get depends on the item you used to activate the puzzle. In some cases you'll get an update to a Collection series, for others (such as the maps where you have unscramble the letters to make a word OR make 3 -4 words from the letters provided) you'll activate a quest that gives you the location somewhere in the galaxy where you need to go to complete the quest. I'm not sure what the latter gives as I'm saving the actual doing part until it goes Live.

Well that's not so bad I suppose.
I kind of expected it to be the same linear puzzle each time where all one had to do was simply do a forum search for the answer. But then again it probably will only have a limited number answers (if that) for the word unscramble anyway, so I don't think this is as exciting as it could have been.
So like so many other things concerning SWG I'd say it's a nice attempt but fails in the delivery - at least by the sounds of it.
BTW, what's the challenge level of thse puzzles? Are they no-brainers or are they actully complex?
Not trying to troll...but how is a Meatlump Theme Park supposed to be Star Warsy and Iconic?
