New player looking for suggestions

Hello, I'm a new player to World of Warcraft and I would like to get your help.  I don't know anything about the game and I've picked it up to keep in touch with some friends from college during the summer months.

I'm playing a Shaman and I'm only level 7 right now, going to level some more this weekend after work.  I've made my way up to the Barrens and I'm wondering where I should go next?  Is there some where where I can find out where I should go for my next level area?  Also, is there a place that you can suggest to me that will help me and my friends out with leveling and grouping up?

You should be able to stay in the barrens till 18-20.  Also I recommend getting an addon called Cartographer, it will show you the levels of each zone.  Another great add on is questhelper, it will show you where 99.9% of the quest objectives are (unless you don't want instant help).  Cartographer should be on wowace.com under beta downloads, and questhelper is on wowinterface.com or curse.com.

I would suggest x-roads for around your level unless you have the expansion then you could go try out the Blood Elf area with lots of quests.  Best way to get there would be take the blimp to Undercity and then walk in the entrance but not down inside UC and to your right will be a portal to take you to the Capital BE city.

I like to level up in the forest around UC myself as i've played a lot of undead characters.

Also you want to get into pvp as soon as you can if you're into that, and duel people whenever you can to get an idea of what class you want to really play.

Best suggestion i can give for levelling up is skip the elite instances that require too much time to get groups together for that loot you want because you'll be outlevelling it soon enough.  Don't grind mobs for xp and don't do the instances til end game pretty much.

Just stick to quests that you can do that don't require you to spend two hours to get small returns.

X-roads has a lot of nice small quests that can get you going, basically you can go to the nearest next area from there then get those quests etc.

Also spend time doing crafting and keeping your weapon skills up to level.  I went with engineer and mining and had a blast with those.  Bombs, a flying mount etc. lots of fun, and also metal ore sells really easily.

Only reason to do instances is if you just want to enjoy them for what they are and aren't interested in powerlevelling, i had worked on 3 different warlocks that i maxed out and then various other alts i tried, so to me i did the instances as i could and had a lot of fun in them.

Anyways i'm not playing now (been out since november 07) but beta testing warhammer so . . . enjoy, that game is a monster and one of the best to play and waste time in.

My advice (consider I've read and used every guide out there); go back to Durator and complete quest line and combine it with grinding till you are level 13, then head back to The Barrens. You do not mention if you are an Orc or Tauren. As you seem to have landed in Barrens I suspect you may be a Tauren, in which case head back to Mulgore. Don't leave starting area till you are 13.

Bizarrely with patch 2.3 which reduced amount of xp needed for each level between 20-60, the first 20 levels now feel more like a grind.

I also suggest that you play an Alliance character as well and check out that side of the game.  Some people prefer one faction over another and you won't know which one is better suited to you unless you try both.  If you are playing on a PvP server than choose another server for your Alliance toon since you can't have both on a PvP server.

    Some tips about the game:

1: Buy yourself some bags. General goods vendors sell 6 slot bags at 5s each, if you don't get lucky and get bags as drops, those bags should be the first thing to buy.

2: Do the quests. First do all the quests in your starting area (Durotar or Mulgore for you), then on the next area (Barrens), then on the next area. Only look for a new area to quest in if you either run out of quests or all the quests left on your current area are higher level than you.

3: Read the class forums at www.worldofwarcraf.com, or www.wow-europe.com at some point. There should be useful guides on how to play your class.

4: Remember to buy new skills and new skill ranks from your class trainer always when you can (every 2 levels)

5: Don't bother trying to purchase equipment from Auctionhouse during the first levels. It's best to not purchase any new equipment at all from other players before you are over lvl 30. You can do do with the equipment you get from questing and as drops perfectly well, and you won't have money problems.

6: Every item that is green or better, can usually be sold to other players at Auctionhouse. It's a good way to make a little extra money.

Good advice Vrika, only I would make one small caveat above.  You can use the AH to fill in a gap from time to time.  If you find that you just haven't been able to find a decent upgrade in 10 or so levels for something, it doesn't hurt to buy an upgrade off the AH.  Things like shoulders or back items are sometimes hard to find.  My only caution is that it should be a big upgrade.  Don't get something just because it has 2 extra stamina on it, that's not going to make much of a difference.  But if you can find an item that is a pretty substantial upgrade for you and it's not overpriced, then don't be afraid to buy it.  An item or 2 here or there is not going to cause you money problems, it's only when people are on the AH every other level looking to upgrade that they will burn thru their cash.

This is also known as cheating:)  Well in my book anyway and WoW would consider it cheating as well if it wasn't so kiddy friendly.

EQ2 offers similar kind of 'cheating' with it's EQ2Map UI mod, in fact you can download maps and quick levelling guides for most MMORPGs out there today.  Saying it's "kiddy friendly" for that reason is a little weak, but I suppose playing PC games a primarily a kids activity right?  Bzzzt... wrong answer.   :p

Still waiting for your Holy Grail MMORPG? Interesting...

And you will probably want to bookmark www.thotbott.com   Just type in the quest name that you are having problems with or item you are curious about and you will get all the information you need.

Thank you everyone for your help.  Just one last thing...

Is there some where on the web that I can go to read more about the back story about this game?  I've heard World of Warcraft has a rich back story and history, which I am interested in reading into more.  I find history quite enthralling in the real world and I think that same passion might cross over to a virtual world.

    Thank for your time.

    sites: www.wowwiki.com www.wowhead.com

    hints:

    1. Use the gear from quest rewards as you will be leveling very quickly.
    2. Don't enchant anything that you aren't going to sue for a long time.
    3. If you're on a pvp realm, avoid stranglthorn vale.
    4. Hit Outlands at level 60 instead of 58, it makes it slightly easier going.
    5. If you intend to BG, hit them at the top end of the bracket, it makes it easier and more fun.
    6. Take two gathering professions, skinning/mining are proably the best and sell everything on the AH
    7. Sell ore not bars.
    8. When you hit 70 and get your epic flyer, drop a gathering prof and powerlevel a crafting prof.
