Hey before you do it i rly recomend you read those forums, ati cards have compatibility problems atm, i had an expeience whit my bros pc whit an HD 3870 ( "top of theline" ati card) and he had rly bad fps issues whit it )
While im usign a nvidia 8800gts whit awesome results, he changed hes card for a 9600gt and is rly doign very well now.
I love the game so much but yeah this is a think to consider for ur purchase.
I can feel your anger. This game is defenseless. Take your weapon. Strike this game down with all of your hatred, and your journey towards towards the Dark Side will be complete.
i actually have the X1600 now with 4gb of ram and the games runs fine on low settings but I own an Mac (not good for gaming, I know) and I'm unable to get a gaming pc until I go to college/have enough money for one so the best upgrade right now would be getting the 2600 pro apparently

I run AoC on a ATI 3870 X2 and it runs like a champ. No bad FPS at all. It does have the ? bug in the inventory where all the items in inventory have the ? on them till you hover the mouse over the item. That is due to crossfire enabled.
Run the game on default high with the view distance maxed and no bad FPS. Running Vista x64 4 gig ram.
Until my character died, than it became erratic. After the patch I had 7-27FPS.
That wouldn't be me that fails at computers, that would be FunCom.
O by the way, latest word about the game- There is a guild calling itself "Al'Qaida ", funcom is aware of it but has done nothing. I quit playing the game. Suggest you guys do the same.

I run an IMAC to play AOC, bootcamped into windows XP pro. It has the Radeon 2600 Pro installed. The game runs fine (50+fps everywhere) on max everything but shadows. Turn off shadows. Go outside if you like and want to see them.
It should be noted that you need to check your Processor usage (control alt delete, check the %, if its at 100now, a Gcard won't help you much [bottleneck]), and need 2g+ ram to run AOC. Effectively with any gcard.
You should also check your virtual memory settings in windows (Control panel - system - advanced - (advanced performance options) and make sure you have the MINIMUM virtual memory setting for your computer (Bottom part of that page, click change, make sure that the recommended is < currently allocated). If you've got a large HD and like to multitask, set it to 10g or so, it won't hurt - just defrag often. This can give FPS on almost any windows machine - as nobody checks this, and its often below the recommended, which will severely hamper AOC performance.
Also, anyone else bootcamping an IMAC should know that the Radeon 2600 PRO - thanks to apple's shitty drivers - shows up as the ATI Mobility some such shit. There are no ATI Mobility cards of any kind distributed on Imacs. You will have to download, and force, the computer to properly run and detect the ATI Radeon 2600 Pro you have in your computer. PM me if you need help doing that.
I realize this is 90% useless info for your question - but its important people like me with this setup understand that their system is running poorly because of incorrect drivers.
Cheers

I just switched from the ATI x1600 512pro to the Nvidia 9600 gt. O man what a change.
x1600 is not a bad card just the 9600 gt is so much better. I however think AOC might be a bit much for the x1600. LOTRO and EVE was fine on it, but AOC is very heavy on your comp.
Not sure why those are the only 2 choices for you, as there are other cheap cards on the market much better.

2600 pro should be a better card.

actually all this info is what I exactly need, someone using an iMac to run AoC on bootcamp with a HD 2600 Pro who knew everything I needed plus more! Thanks for your help. Sadly I won't be getting my new computer until next month. this is th iMAc I plan to use to play AoC: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/91254000/wo/tn2DYXjLmr1I3OlvNWXFrpX1pXM/2.?p=0 but it will have 4gb of ram and a 500gb hard drive
