When Perpetual Entertainment (or P2 as they were apparently called at the time) went under, it was reported that their highly sought-afttr IP Star Trek Online had been picked up by another "bay area developer".
Speculation has been fueled by a new addition to the Cryptic Studios website, a timer, counting down from 45 days with a space backgroud that suggests that it may indeed be true.
you can check out the timer at the Cryptic site here.

Leaping the gun again, eh Jon?
Shame on you posting another 'news' feature on little more than a rumour thread. lol
Its not a rumor! lol
I mean what are the chances that cryptic "Just happens" to use old Star Trek online concept art for a countdown on their page?
Although that would be funny

As you may have noticed, it's very clear in the news post that it is fuel for SPECULATION. It's not reported as fact.
That being said, it does make things a bit more intriguing.

It would be great if this were true. However, I notice that this countdown is featured prominently on the Champions Online Official Site. Anyone think that it might just relate to that MMO and not a speculative Star Trek venture?
I thought about that, but it wouldn't be unusual for a company to do a small amount of hype on their current site for something in production.

We have another chat going on here I started, where I show undisputable evidence that the game is indeed being made by Cryptic.

I, for one, am extremely interested in how this all shakes out
I still dont see Star Trek being MMO friendly. The format and expected experiance just doesnt lend itself to solo/group gaming very easily. What I am waiting to know is how starship operations work in a group MMO setting. I figure its one ship - one owner type play. Away Teams will be fine, but what of the space experiance? I just hope it favors its ready made audiance, the Star Trek fan, and not try to break records in subs to players that dont care about its lore.
Stargate Worlds, however, has a show formula that begs to be a MMO. You can solo or group to run adventures instanced in the gate.
I dunno, I can see it. Raids all have raid leaders and everyone has their own roles, so why couldn't this just translate to different roles on a ship? Or it could be that the ship is your "home" and the NPCs on the ship follow your command. There are two possibilities there..
Good eye, however, it isn't prominently featured. It definately is off to the side as if its an "aside" and the "meanwhile" make it even more so. "Hey, you're here because you're interested in Champions, or MMOs, or Cryptic, or all/some of the above. We also have something else cooking up soon that you also might be interested in."
O,ooooooo,Titillating.
It's perfectly feasible if they follow a similar plan to something like Puzzle Pirates and use a load of NPCs.
You want to take your nice shiny Miranda class ship out? No problem... you get a crew comprising Ensign Bolian Newb, Ensign Vulcan N'wb, Ensign Klingon K'Nughb, and so on... until you can fill the positions from live players... or you can just take the NPCs and go touring. They'll suck compared to real players, but they'll at least get you from A to B if you're ferrying stuff.
You need more xp in Astronavigation? No problem... sign on aboard the USS Newb Cruiser under Captain James T. Newb, take your bridge position and practice until you're ready for a real vessel.
It's already working for Puzzle Pirates, why wouldn't it work for a Star Trek MMO?
Guys, while I respect that Jon has to list it as speculation because he is a news provider, it is CLEARLY concept art from Perpetual's version of STO.
See the original here: http://gaming.trekcore.com/startrekonline/conceptart.html
It is no longer rumor, no longer speculation. Cryptic is developing Star Trek Online.
Let the heavens rejoice!
im really glad towards seeing a star trek mmo being made... i am so excited! ^.^
In case you all havent seen it, look at my Original Thread:

And I assume they are starting over completely with the game.
-Jive
wow i thionk they should have picked something more star trecky to put up there, a destroyed planet just isnt what i think of when talking abotu star treck, i say taht ebcause they always show outerspace in the credits, but never have they shown destruction, just awe unspiring images, i hope they dont go a diferan route with this online game
My main complaint is that the counter still has 45 days to go. That's forever! :-)
But yes, no doubt: Cryptic will release STO.

I found it first hehe, but seriously. The picture in the ticker is indeed original STO artwork from Perpetual. I guess we will see whats in store in about 45 days....and counting down.

Oh, I was not the first person to find out that info, for sure, but to be fair, I did recognize it as soon as I saw it.
I hope that's actually cool, and not just very, very nerdy.
Funny thing is when I saw it I was just checking out Cryptics site to get info on Champions Online and looked at the ticker for a min then it hit me like a sledgehammer.
Until this is officially confirmed, this falls under "rumor" and not "news". Sorry Jon, nice try though!
I don't really see how Star Trek can be done into an MMO. Maybe similar to Guild Wars, but then that game isn't very Massively Multiplayer either. Balancing out away missions, on board duties and starship combat? Not sure how they are going to pull it off so that it (1) pleases the hardcore fans and (2) draws in enough non-fans to pull a profit.
Though I had my initial doubts about a game where everyone was a superhero too. Thanks to Cryptic I been playing CoH for 4 years now. They may just pull this off and make it feasible.
As the cliche goes...
I called it.
Well not really called it, I just put the dots together and decrypted the developer.
And that is why...
Conservatives' pessimism is conducive to their happiness in three ways. First, they are rarely surprised -- they are right more often than not about the course of events. Second, when they are wrong they are happy to be so. Third, because pessimistic conservatives put not their faith in princes -- government -- they accept that happiness is a function of fending for oneself. They believe that happiness is an activity -- it is inseparable from the pursuit of happiness.
I do hope it's gonna be STO, but when i look futher into the screenshots of games in development i see like 3/4 different tye of games in them but i find it hard to see anything ST related in those screenshots at this page> In Development.
Still hope the timer means what many speculate about.
wow... wow If they are making STO I shall worship Cryptic not unlike gods! YEs I'm a cryptic fan yes I'nm a trekkie and yes I'm an MMO freak but, still 40+ days to see if it's true I'll be setting up a shrine until then
All Prise Cryptic even if it's just a random Sci-Fi MMO...

I'd love it work this way, for my guild to be the ships crew. Lots of raid-type missions that improve our rating with Starfleet and allow us a better ship. For soloing I could beam down to wherever we are currently in orbit or get a shuttle for places further away.
Let's have more of these rumor news posts, MMO gossip is cool
