Are they just like World of Warcraft and LOTRO type mmos that use WSAD controls? Or is it poiint and click and such???

you can change the controls i forget exactly how. Menu, push over so you get second column of things to choose from. Its near the bottom like 4th from the bottom. In the config change keyboard setting to compact. I can be more detailed later when i get outa class and back to my dorm lol. goodluck if you can figure it out.

it is initially arrow keys, and like my previous nonsense post (didnt read your post correctly) you can change them to WASD.

Just get a controller, it's so much easier.
After playing on the PS2 forever I got used to the PS2 controllers so I bought an adapter for my computer to be able to use it on there.

Agreed with Neptus...this game was designed for a controller, any other interface can get rather complex, doesn't mean it's not do-able to use just mouse and keyboard, but it's a lot less stressful while learning the interface.
meh, i prefer WASD, you dont use the mouse at all so thats cool, rest is just macroed keys: ctrl +2, alt+5 etc.

When you're using a PS2 controller, do you exclusively use the controller or do you also use the keyboard for other commands? Also, on the controller, how do you move around (what sticks/buttons do what)?
I'm contemplating getting a controller for this game because I really do hate the controls so far. Then again, I really haven't tried playing that much, just the starting area, getting used to it. Haven't had time to actually "play" the game.

You use the controller for everything except typing. This includes macros and even taking screen shots. You can configure it in the FFXI config.

I have to say, this game might not be the most engaging/fun MMO, but it feels like FF and that is mostly due to the excellent controls. Seriously good with a controller.
If you're playing on PC, grab a USB XBox controller. Best option IMO.
Myself, i always play with keyboard and mouse combo.
However, in FFXI I played with keyboard and PS2 type controller. The game is meant for this kind of controll and I was better for adapting to it.
You can go to the configuration menu and you can set up your controller how ever you like. I think you can't configure the triggers on the xbox controller i don't know if they have changed this because they are configured for the xbox game. This is probally true for all the controllers but i wouldn't know.
They can be WASD or arrow keys. They feel nothing like WoW though since they arent optimized for PC and are about 7-years old.
FFXI's control are by far the best I've used. I hate the point and click...also hate WSAD control. Its some what similiar but using arrow keys and numpad has been easier to use. You'll get use to it and you'll find out its a lot easier once you do.
