Aye, thier patching happens on a monthly basis.

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"

Age of Conan. Until they actually fix the huge amount of game breaking bugs and put in the features they promised would be there at release... No. All the words from the devs are "soon" "we'll get to it soon" "we're making is so that you can actually PvP soon" "we'll fix city building soon" .

Skip it, its barely an MMO anyway.

Actually, I would advise 'No' to you.

Your experience is with high-quality MMOs with very good launches.

AoC is not (yet) a high-quality MMO and the launch has been less than stellar.

If you must try it, wait a few months for the dust to settle and the major bugs to be fixed.

Otherwise, I fear you will be severely dissapointed and frustrated.

Just my 2c, since you asked.

If you've been waiting for this game for well over a year (like me) and can't wait buy it now.

if your not sure you will like it (on the fence), and the box price is alot of money to you, I recomend waiting. in time the game will get many fixes and the content it lacks. plus theres a chance by then there will be a free trial.

    Dear Game Developers,

    Nerf Rock.
    Paper is fine though.

    Regards,

    Scissors.

As a casual gamer I would say to go ahead and give AoC a go.  If you don't like it then you still have your free month.  It's the same cost of any other game out there and you'll get just about as much out of it as you would a single player title in that time.  There's certainly enough to do during the first month.

Keep in mind that you must enter a payment method when you create your account, but apparently you can choose an option to pay by mail (which I didn't see, but the fellow I bought the game with used).

Anyway, as a casual gamer you should not hit the end game as quickly as many others have, and as a result they should have time to patch in more stuff and fix more bugs.  It's true that they're patching frequently at the moment, but I don't necessarily see this as a bad thing; rather, they're doing their jobs to clean up problems.

When I picked up AoC I had no interest in it.  I bought it because I was with someone that I know and he bought it, so we both got copies of it.  I'm still not exactly what you would call a fan of the game, but I'm not a fan of Conan.  The movies were great, but I can't see myself ever reading any of the books.

I don't dislike the game and I don't think that it's great.  It's OK.  I like to think of it as a combination of Guildwars and DDO, with a combination of instanced buildings (Inns, warehouses, dungeons, and so forth) with open areas that many people can adventure in (akin to what would happen if the instances around GW towns were open to several more people).

    You could do worse.

Ultiamtely, you should buy it, and try it out. Aoc is not for everyone, but it is a fun game if you actually take your time with it. There are a few bugs at the moment, but nothing that wont be eventually fixed. Wait about a month or so get the game and try it out, if you dont like it, uninstall and try something else. But by no means should not play because someone is telling you that it sucks, its personal opinion.  You should create your own opinion of the game after you try it out yourself. If you like it then you do, if you dont, well there will be another 10 or so MMOs comming out by year end anyway.

Your kidding me right? There are patch notes that come out with the patches, in the notes there are ui, character, environment, pvp, battleground changes. If it was maintenance there would be no need to share that information with us.

If you are a casual gamer DO NOT even bother with AoC. It is not worth it.

I would say buy it and try it.  I did, it was fun for me for almost a week before I canceled.  I may try it again later when it's semi-complete and most of what's promised on the box is actually in the game.

Care to elaborate? I think AoC is one of the most casual friendly MMO alternatives at the market. I consider myself a casual gamer and I have so far experienced a lot of fun in the fragmented amount of time that I have available.

If you are an explorer then a big fat NO.

If you don't mind the instancing, the patching going on and want to play what is currently the best looking MMO out now then YES.

But of course you can ignore what everyone has to say as it will all be biased and simply wait for a trial client/buddy pass to make up your own mind :)

Your crazy to ask this kind of question on this forum, this website carrys more disgruntle and pissed off AoC players than most. Yeah, you do have the fanbase as well, but most are playing AoC and not wasting much time on this forum and debating with the nayers and the hate club.

So honestly, you will not get a 100% Yes or No to whether you should play or not.

If the price of the game is going to break your piggy bank, then I would say wait till the buddy key is in place. If you are a gambler by nature, I say wtf, do it then. The game is'nt utter garbage as people claim it to be.

If you dont like the game this time around, you can always come back to it later.

Same for me. I bought it and tryed it for about a week. I will likly reinstall it once they bring that big patch they are talking about to the live servers later this summer, or whenever it goes live.

I have to say, the game does look really good. they have some neat ideas. But the game needs a little more polish and some feature completion.

    Yeah, I'd do Betty....
But I'd be thinking about Wilma.

Like I tell anyone else that asks me if they should buy AoC, I just say wait until the buddy keys are out or wait 6 months before shelling out the 50 bucks. AoC is in beta state atm and you shouldnt be paying for a beta game.

This game is more RPG than most games out there, mutch due to the character progression in the singleplayer area. The zone system is very similar to EQ2, the zones themselfs are plenty enough to go around. Actually the zones in game are mutch larger than those in WoW when you actually visit them. There is raiding if you like that. Most whining is about sertain classes that does have problems. Fixes and content are added twice a week.

I didnt plan to buy this game, but since some friends bought it and started a guild i joined in. I have to say the game is most enjoyable when playing with friends.

I have been playing AoC for about a week now, as i said in my original post i am a casual gamer so dont get to put a massive amount of time into the game. I have managed to get my necromancer up to level 16. I have to say that so far i am very impressed with the game, there are loads of quests, the combat is very good (send in minions then blast away!), graphics are good. The dungeon i have visited (underhalls) was very well designed. Funcom seem to be patching very often which can only be a good thing in my eyes, i realise that the game isnt 'perfect' at the moment but i am having too much fun to care!
