Well, neither of the two companies involved here has any real ability to keep a secret.  I think the first reliable statements re: this started appearing about a year ago.  I guess the doubters will finally believe this one, though.

The bigger story here is what LA is doing.  It's sad to see LucasArts finally disband its internal studio.  The official word from LA is that they're going to maintain internal development, but this is bullshit.  Once the final polish is applied to Force Unleashed, and it's 99.99% done from what I see, and their latest cash-in garbage for Indi is done, that will be it.  The rest of the guys will get the ax, and it will all be outsourced to other studios.

I don't know if people here remember, but there was a day when they had the midas touch.  They had Blizzard's reputation for quality and polish, and their games were certainly not limited to spin-offs.  I guess all the titans fall, eventually.

Who knows what the future will bring?  Maybe fifteen years from now, Blizzard will be gone, and just like Origin, most people won't remember it or its franchises.  Maybe Bioware will be the new monolithic publisher that everybody cites as the example of corporate evil in the video game industry.  Maybe Britney Spears II will get into the video game industry and work as a map designer for a shitty FPS with a twenty-five million dollar budget designed by Justin Timberlake Jr.

We can only hope some things never come to pass.

I remember. I was finished with them when they decided to dump the Monkey Island and Maniac Mansion IPs to just milk the Star Wars cow to death. Those were some very enjoyable games and funny as hell to boot. As for a KOTOR MMO only time will tell. I'll believe it when I see it but knowing them now it would just end up being WoW with Star Wars skins. After all that is exactly what they did with SWG. Anyone that thinks Lucas Arts wasn't behind that fiasco is living in a fantasy world. SOE had a perfectly good profitable game until Lucas Arts decided that milking the WoW player base was the way to go.

Edit: The only thing that can save this project is if Lucas Arts gives Bioware full say in development but that is another thing I'll have to see to believe. Bioware's last co-development with them(The original KOTOR) left such a bad taste in their mouths they swore it would never happen again.

I would have liked the Bioware MMO to be set in the Mass effect universe,  It has more shades of gray than the Star Wars universe.

    Ok, now I'm convinced :D

Sounds really intresting to me anyways.

Same here, I think a Mass Effect MMO would be awesome. I though that's what it was until they announced the trilogy for the game.

Until I hear an official statement from either LA or Bioware, I won't believe that it is an Old Republic MMO

KOTOR MMO will kick a lot of ass....so would Mass Effect one....

The only part that bites is how long it's going to take before it's out....but I suppose there are a few other games almost out that will help ease the pain, haha.

I also heard there is supposedly a Final Fantasy 13 MMO coming out, or in development, Haeresis or something like that.

  • SunriderSunrider Member UncommonPosts: 527

Honestly I dont think that this is true. How do you check the creditials of someone emailing you saying "call this number, i used to work for LA and have news."

Seriously... i just think that someones screwing someone over with false news here... Besides what if it actually IS someone who worked for LA and just knows Bioware is doing something star wars related for LA? It is possible... a lot of dev teams are kept out of the know as to what other dev teams are working on... someone may have just heard "kotor" and assumed it was an mmo.

plain and simple, theres just not enough cash to be made in a pre-cu SWG. every company is about the bottom line. there are NO companies left out there that make video games for the gamer. it doesn't happen, it doesn't exist, and those companies that start up that try to be loyal to the player-base are there soon after bought out by someone who has little care for the people who fill their wallets so they can fill their bathtubs with 300$ champaign.why would they hire on people who worked on SWG? well i don't know, if i own a bakery and i want to get into making deli sandwiches etc, then am i going to hire on people who don't know what they're doing? or am i going to hire on people with experience from panera bread? personally, i'm going to hire people who know wtf they're doing.WoW's numbers were not a freak experience. They had multiple games prior to there launching of WoW and if you played starcraft you played warcraft and if you played diablo you played wow.yes, right, SWG has a great backing of the star wars universe but a lot of people, such as my mother, don't play video games but love the movies. a lot of the fan-base IS older, and a lot of the player-base IS older as well. When i played most of the people who played were older then me and I'm 24 atm. so yeah.Listen, it doesn't matter what you do... WoW brought in a lot of people because of the reasons listed above. The truth of it is, is that MMO's aren't for everyone and anyone... WoW was for everyone... it brought in people who never played video games... hell, most of the people i played with were first AND last time MMO'ers... hell they were first time gamers... past bejeweled.
What companies need to do is go out there and build the best god damned video game they can. Bioware is capable of that and is WELL known for MANY years because of their past RPG's and have always had a very devoted fan-base and a near-perfect record. Now they have people on board with MMO experience, they have the backing of a LARGE company whos bottom line IS finance and they KNOW Bioware can deliver. If Bioware is smart, and if EA is smarter... they'll build up there own IP and do it from the ground up... besides... that way people wont walk in with tons of expectations, set by rules and guides they cant deliver.

there was a Square Enix untitled project that wasn't suppose to be FinalFantasy that they wanted to be an MMO but it never got off the ground and they supposably aren't working on one atm.

Its possible but they're working on enough console stuff that the new mmo may be nixed. iuno.

whoever you heard this from was bullshitting you, S-E is working on a new MMO with the same engine the XIII games are using, they're prob still too early to make any significant announcements, and plus SE its known for keeping quiet about their projects so its no surprise that we know next to nothing about it.

most recent news came from GDC 08 http://www.psu.com/Square-Enix-at-GDC-and-confirmed-new-MMO-as-well--a0002693-p0.php  the MMO has also been talked about a number of other times in past events.

    lolz....

I don't see how it could be possible for SE to not have some sort of MMO underway, I mean both FF13's aren't finished yet, but there are quite a few MMO's out from like, every other company ever, they need to compete at some level with that.....Chances are it's going to take til like, half a decade to make it, but I hope when it does, its for console....

It's the same BS rumor that has being spreading for a while now. Can any of these blogs masquerading as journalist even quote this "Ex-Empolyee" and what he/she actually said? Give me a name to back up your sources or evidence that points directly to factual evidence. Folks if you get your news from a blog you are a sad human being. Might as well ask the homeless guy under freeway to provide you with news.

I don't understand... Mass Effect was an AMAZING game, but it is so clearly trying to be Star Wars without being Star Wars...

See, i dont understand this statement. In every RPG, and every action movie you're saving the world, finding out about yourself, and trying to convince people you're doing the right thing. These are the key elements to... any game really. Hell you could say Halo was a rip off of star wars if you wanted to... just minus the force powers. fable was a rip off of star wars... you have the powers just no light sabers... they were still made of metal then. oh! oh! how about Advent Rising? Awesome game, good story line... but it ripped off star wars... except no swords.

I'm tired of people knocking things and saying it was clearly trying to do this but not do this... take it for what it is. A great piece of art with an epic story all its own.

If this wasnt made by the people who made KOTOR, would people be claiming it was something it wasnt?

Lol, I would have been surprised if it were AYNTHING but KOTOR MMO. I mean, come on, Mass Effect was a nice single play RPG, I really loved it, but the Mass Effect world has WAY too less flesh at the bone to make a MMORPG world. There was just ONE real city, you saw nada about the alien races homeworlds, all planets were copy-paste dungeons besides the few story-driven ones. Good Single player game, but way too thin for a good MMO. And Potter or anything was never realistic. I might be wrong, but all logic goes to a KOTOR MMo, and did so right away.

WoW was based off of RTS games and books that explained the places that we never saw and the history we could never see...

I don't know, I thought Mass Effect was pretty original, unless you're talking about the KOTOR system itself, the interactive screen...

But then again, whenever I look at any MMO just about, there are 2 or 3 other games that come to mind just from the features on the screen itself, ie, the hotkey bar, the minimap in the upper right hand corner, the 3 or 4 little colored health stamina and mana bars, the skill tree......All of these are starting to become part of every MMO online, which kind of sucks, Shadowbane has been the most original game so far, KOTOR has been outstanding, and I have to applaud Mass Effect....it has the same idea with the multiple choice selections, but that sort of thing made it fun.  I mean, I never expected to be able to get down and dirty with that chic in the, uh, massage parlor...haha...its little things like that, like in GTA4, that make the games cool and entertaining, because it's stuff I haven't seen before.

Oh come on! Sure with time and patience you can make a MMO out of everything, but there is only one logic to make it all so ridiculously secret, and that is another Star Wars MMO. If it were Harry Potter or Mass Effect, why hide? A good implemented SW MMO would be THE real challange for WOW and nothing else. Warcraft had a years old legacy and a huge fanbase, so its nothing like Mass Effect or anything unknown out of the blue. Sure, I cant tell what Bioware is thinking, but its what all probability says.
