Skill Based MMO's

MattiusMattius Member Posts: 167

Been playing AoC. I like it , but a big part of me just hates the tedious lvling system in these games now. I know Darkfall is gonna be skill based, are there any other skill based titles on the horizon? Something thats likely to pull a decent pop to play with.

Guild Wars right now Guild Wars 2 in the future.

Its probably the only MMO ive seen with fairly balanced classes and probably the best skills and combat system in the business. After seeing what other games are putting out lately you can tell the devs at Guild Wars put alot of though into their skill and combat system. They sold 5million copies already so I think GW2 will see a nice population if not bigger.

But the main reason why its skill based is because they just made the game that way,its not about the best gear or best weapons because all the stats on max armour and weapons are capped and you can mod them to suite your specific needs, after that its all about how you fill your skillbar or how you synergize your skills with others in your party be it going in for pve or pvp.

Theres hundresd of skills and you can only take 8 with you so you gotta be smart what ones to take for what situation and you can spend ages playing with the different combos of skills you can put together and maybe make that build everyone will copy until it gets nerfed. I was able to solo an area I wasnt supposed to solo because the depth of the skill and combat system allowed me to, where as someone who didnt have the knowledge of the skills and how to use them they wouldnt be able to get through the same area, thats what I call a skill based game, not level and gear like all the rest. In Guild Wars Skill>Time lets just hope its the same or better in GW2.

Yeah honestly almost all mainstream games are going the route of exactly what many of us are tired of with the solo quest grind to cap where gear > skill.

I would agree that GW2 is one to look out for since I believe they are going to have a more open and un-instanced World.  Many love the Guild Wars games but leave due to the single player feel of them.

Chronicles of Spellborn is another one also, and possibly Earthrise in the more distant future.

Mortal Online and Darkfall are kind of iffy, but maybe one day one of them will come out and be decent.

GW is not skill based doh. GW is classes/levels. And besides, GW is probably one of the worst games I ever tried. It's not really MMORPG. It's spammed with instances. A game OP was asking about should be a sandbox like upcoming Darkfall or Earthrise.

Anyway to give my piece of advice, the only true sandbox games out there are not EVE online and UO. Shadowbane is probably a wasteland at the moment.

As you mentioned Darkfall, there's also Earthrise, Mortal online, APB , Fallen Earth, Crusades online and Global Agenda. All these games are up and coming and are set in a open sandbox world with a skill system, rather than a class based lvl one.

For me anyway the instancing in Guild Wars is a strength, I see no need to fraternize with random people while im out farming or questing or whatever. And if im in the mood thats whats towns are for. I enjoy the fact I get my own private copy of the world when I leave town and can invite who I want to share it with me.
Ive played other so called sandbox games and its such an emmersion breaker seeing everyone runing around doing the same quest as me or wating for a boss to spawn, wth? how is everyone doing the same quest as me? how is that even possible!? spawning enemies? is this doom? what the hell that guy just stole my kill, whos game is this? this is pve I dont need to share this a bunch of kids running aorund being idiots, im playing a game and the only thing that open worlds do is get people in my way. That my personal pereference in how i play my games and GW gives me the option to play it that way.

Im willing to bet you anything that if these other games gave the option to have your own private instance to do a quest or a public area to do a quest 99% of the players would choose a private instance over the public areas. Its kinda like pugs, given the option people would rather group with people they know, thats why games that forced you to group with players to get through content failed. An uninstanced world is basicaly 1 giant group you didnt invite into your party. And maybe for games without content thats fine where the people are the content but in games that acutally do care about the conent and how it plays, why on earth do you want uninvited guests unless its PVP I dont see the reason, and at the very leaste there should be an option.

And thats how I view instances in guild wars, an option to play the game in private without any hassels, the key here is you got options.

Hey OP, check out Earthrise.  No levels, no instances, no classes, et cetera.  Plus a sci-fi setting!  I can't stand fantasy.

Can you please give me an example of a "sandbox" game you played?
