I currently am solo griding using a elvan war. I have a claymore and a sword/shield combo. Which is better? I figured the sword/shield while solo and the 2h sword when im in a group...but wanted to hear what you guys thought. Thanx!

Your probly going to do much better with a 2H axe or an axe and shield. Warriors have a better combat skill rating with 2H axes (A+) and 1H axes (A-) then a 2H sword (B+) or 1H sword (B) which effects accuracy and how fast you get weapon skills. At your level however it doesn't make too much of a difference but good to keep in mind.
i actuall have an axe/shield combo...thanks for reminding me. but whats better in the solo/group situations?
Using two-handed axes will most likely be better in both solo and party situations, but warriors in higher levels won't find many soloing opportunities.
Yea a 2H Axe will probly do best in both solo and group but you won't do much soloing past levels 15-20 anyway so your primary weapon will be 2H for the rest of your time as a warrior.
i just picked up a polearm so i can raise my wep skill when i go to dragoon. I happened to see someone as a drg/blu and thuoght what a good idea it was. i had a claymore and though it had great dps, it was slow...
Leveling 2h weapons is slow and sometime feels drawn out, but worth the time you put into them.
It's a good idea to try and keep Axe and Great Axe capped, as long as your using Warrior as main. This is helpful if you want to finish your Warrior career later on. I wouldn't mess to much with the Polearm until you unlock Dragoon. Around level 30 or when you unlock Dragoon just spend sometime in the Dunes with Warrior as main and using a Poleearm, you'll see the weapon skill level's go up quickly.
A friend of mine did the same thing back when we first started playing FFXI - he wanted to use polearm as WAR so he can have an easier time playing DRG later on. The intention was good, but once you are DRG you'll have more than enough time to earn polearm skills. The result was a tougher time leveling his WAR without a more suitable weapon such as great axe. Bringing additional weapons (if your pocket has some breathing room) to gain skills can be good whenever your main weapon skill is maxed out for your character level, but I suggest using great axe as your main weapon as WAR.
I just picked up an inferno axe btw to start lvl'ing that up. I went as far as 37 on the spear, 22 on great sword, and 23 on 1h sword and axe.
And thanks again for everyone who responded.
