Looking for a new addiction...

Played EvE for a long time but most of my friends quit and I followed suit. A lot of my friends pick up WoW just because it favors the casual play style. Married people don't have fixed schedules. I've been playing WoW and I've gotten bored.

I'm looking for a new MMO. WAR is too far away and AoC seems to violate the number one rule of online gaming: assume players will behave badly (i.e. ArchLord gank-fest). Plus AoC is from Funcom. They really put the "FU" in "fun" for me during my AO time. I played Tabula Rasa in beta but I didn't get a good vibe from it. Vanguard beta was a disaster and poisoned me on ever trying the game again.

So what does that leave me? I'm looking for genuine suggestions, not flames on my past gaming experience. TIA.

I really think you should give Vanguard one more try, they have really redeemed themselves and updated the game tremendously. Many players like you cursed VAN (and rightly so) in the beginning and recently went back and are loving it now.

I've heard of a good Online game, it's called OUTSIDE. It has incredibly lifelike graphics, and you can do almost anything you want (just watch out for the cops if your thinking what i'm thinking) You can go to a store, buy something you can kill stuff with, and change peoples lives forever. You use what you look like too, and people can make fun of you, so you can kill them! Don't forget, OUTSIDE, i repeat, OUTSIDE!

Yes, I know, I actually saw an online game called outside.

You made a critical flaw in your assumption. You assumed I was a pasty faced teenager. I spend enough time outside working in the yard and such.

I'm going to try Neo Steam. Looks interesting. Haven't played a free MMO since Dyspora (spelling?) shutdown.

Could you narrow your interests down by any chance? It would help with making a few suggestions

As always, I highly recommend Guild Wars. I'm not sure if you've played it before, but I've been playing it for over 2 years and love it. It isn't for everyone - it's completely instance-based, meaning that outside of outposts and towns you only see the members of your party.

That being said, many other features make up for the lack of persistence (being addressed in Guild Wars 2). Firstly, once you've bought the box there's no monthly fee. Despite this, the game is updated on a weekly basis with constant balance tweaks. These updates are only a few kilobytes, meaning you never have to wait ages on "patch day." Every weekend there is an event too.

The graphics are beautiful, especially for a game of a few years back. It is completely skill-based, meaning that gear etc. don't really matter, only your skill does. Apart from that, there is also a low level cap of 20 (the fun doesn't stop at max level), cut-scene narrated storylines, plenty of quests, titles to collects and NPC henchmen/heroes for hire when you can't find a party.

As I said, the instances and low level cap may scare some off (believe it not on that second point), but many see the advantages of it. Good luck!

EDIT: You may also want to look into The Lord of the Rings Online. I haven't played it much as it simply failed to grasp me, but many feel captivated by it and enjoy it immensly.

I agree try LOTRO. It is the best MMO I have played if you like PVE. Great graphics and the best community. I have a 10-day trial buddy key with no restrictions if you want.

I don't know anyone who is playing or tried LoTRO. I might be curious enough to give it a shot. I have a copy of Guild Wars. A friend of mine gave it to me but I haven't actually played it yet.

My interests are various. I love freedom. Games like early SWG and EvE that allowed me to do whatever I wanted, when I wanted were great. I prefer skill based MMOs but they are rare. I don't mind gear based MMOs but I really need something compelling to hop on the treadmill. I do like to craft and fight. In EvE, for example, I had two characters (one industrial and one fighter).

Thanks for all the advice and suggestions.

About my earlier post, i actually saw some advertisements for an online game called OUTSIDE. I was not trying to assume anything or offend anyone.

Of course I play a sport, it's called women.

Yea, you only have to fork over $150.00 within a week or two of playing it, and download the 15 xpacs they have. But no monthly fee!

What on Earth are you talking about? A single campaign can last a person a good 5 months, especially for a new player. One needs only buy a single campaign to start with. Considering the fact that the games sell for so cheap these days, buying all 3 expansions and Eye of the North won't come to $150 even..

If the OP was to buy all 4 campaigns at once they'd seriously be overloading themself. It's been 2 years and I haven't finished my current campaigns totally yet. I haven't even attempted Eye of the North. So don't ask me where you're getting the notion that one has to buy all 4 games in one shot..
