Trying to Upgrade Comp Memory, Need Help

abbabaabbaba Member Posts: 1,143

Greetings everyone, so bought an extra 2 1gb sticks of RAM to upgrade my computer with. They are the exact same as the old two sticks, Corsair Xtreme 1gb sticks, 800 mhz 1.9 volts 5-5-5-12 config.

My Asus M2A-VM motherboard has 4 memory slots, two black and two yellow, the two black at the bottom and the two yellow immediately above them.

So, in order to put them all in I had to take the two originals out of the black slots (on the bottom) and I put the new ones in the yellow slots (top) first, then I put the old ones back in the black slots.

I started up the comp and it wouldn't boot up. I turned it off again after a few seconds and took out all the memory. The new sticks in the yellow slots were extremely hot to the touch...I could barely take them out.

So I'm wondering, did I do something wrong or did I get two dud sticks?

You have to reset the CMOS on your motherboard.  Its a little plastic chip that covers 2/3 pins, next to a silver round battery.  Take the chip off and put it on so it covers the other pin and the middle pin.  If you cant find it, check the mobo manual (do this when your comp is off btw).

Also make sure you have good cooling cause ram heats up fast, especially when they are clumped up.
