Impressions of a Level 4

I am just being honest here, I am only a level 4 . . . so obviously I have not experienced much of the game. However, these are my impressions of the game as it would be "right out of the box" so to speak:

Lag: I have to say that I am incredibly impressed by the smoothness of the game. No kidding, in newbie zones right now there are literally hundreds of people and I am not experiencing even the slightest lag. This is especially amazing due to the concentrated population. For example, the first newbie quest is actually concentrated on mobs in a small area (especially in the human area) and I have experienced no lag whatsoever.

Characters: This is a tough one for me. There a quite a few options as to what race you would like to be. Additionally, when creating your character, you have several ways to customize it so that it does not look like every other player in the game. This is important to me, because I have been playing Lineage 2 and it is very disconcerting to see all the dopplegangers roaming around. However, the character models in Lineage 2 are outstanding and the models in WoW really do nothing for me.

Fighting: This is basically pretty standard MMO fare here. Click on a mob, kill it, rinse, repeat. One thing I do like is that they have implemented something for archers/hunters that always bothered me in both FFXI and L2. In WoW, if you are using a bow and the mob is right on top of you, you will get a message saying that the mob is too close and you will not be able to fire. I think this is more realistic than standing right next to your prey and shooting arrows at it. In WoW, like other games, you will need to switch to a close-combat weapon in these instances. A huge plus is the lack of KSing in the game. Correct me experienced players if I am wrong, but it seems that if you hit a mob it is yours, and if someone comes along and kills it you still get the loot and exp.

Newbie Community: I like the community. Everyone seems to be concentrating on having fun . . which is the point. It reminds me a lot of the FFXI Community at the moment. This is the single most obvious improvement over Lineage 2 in my opinion. Even in closed/open beta, the L2 in-game community was pretty foul at any given time (e.g. "Can someone tell me where the %@*&;! trainers are?") So far I have seen none of that.

Controls: Pretty standard stuff here. Nothing special. Nothing bad.

Graphics: To say that I am disappointed in the graphics is an understatement. Again, based on only the newbie zones, the game looks graphically uninteresting. The colors seemed to be washed out and frankly I find the world to be ugly . . but that is just my opinion . . and again, just based on being a newb at level 4. However, to put it mildly, I am most disappointed in the graphics in this game.

Based on what I have seen thus far, would I buy it?  Hmmm, that is a tough one. Right now I would have to say no. However, I am looking forward to open beta so that I can explore further and see what this game has to offer. For me, the biggest con to the entire game is the graphics. This is sincerely one ugly game.

agree with most of your post except this....I see all these noobs that say, "Where the F$@# is mage trainer," or "where the hell can I sell shit"  I mean can no noobs just walk around town and look for the damn merchant....so annoying.....but thats with every game not specific to wow.

I think that all of "those kinds" of noobs will not be in the release since it won't be free image

Have you tried "Click to move" yet? Activate it in the interface options.

Click to move is pretty standard in most MMOs today. Most people don't use it anyway, although I do when I want to play with 1 hand. :)

And I probably agree with the original post, especially the part about the graphics. Don't tell me that the graphics are "stylish", because they aren't. They're just BAD graphics.

Overall though I like the gameplay, haven't gotten a chance to PvP though(is there even a PvP server in the stress test?).

If I went into a coma and woke up when this game was released, I'd probably buy it from what I've seen from the past 2 days. :P

I hate people who say the graphics are bad.  I can totally understand if you don't like the Warcraft 'style',  but just saying 'BAD' makes you look like a complete dolt.  So what if each and every hair on your toons head doesn't have its own characteristics.  IMO this game looks GREAT and you don't need an uber-expensive GPU to enjoy it.

You seem to forget this is World of WARCRAFT.  I'm not even going to explain that.  Your a moron if you can't comprehend it.

    Ill explain it :)

Warcraft 3 looks like this already, same colours same brightness etc. It would be silly to go into Lineage drabness for WoW :P

I thought the graphics were good, but nothing special until I arrived at Ogrimmar (a Horde city) at lvl 7. I was blown away by how beautiful the town looked. It definitely follows the Warcraft theme. But what impressed me was the mixture of lighting, color, and artwork, especially in the cities.

Well after playing it seems like a nice game but it's really not my cup of tea. Something just doesn't click with me in game.

Just as well it was either this game or EQ2 so now I know which I'll be getting.

I think the graphics are great too. A game doesn't have to look like real life, full of tiny surface bumps and individual hairs, in order to be considered good. The models are crisp and clean. There's plenty of detail. Everything fits together properly. No odd or misplaced pixels garbled around. Smooth animations.  I'm glad to see a game that's pleasing to look at and doesn't require a monster PC to run it smoothly. I can understand though why some people that would expect a game to have a ton of layers and billions of polygons would think this game is bad graphics. I guess all I can say is that sometimes simplicity is a good thing. Especially when it's done well. ;)

I agree. I started off in the undead city, it was ok. Nothing really special, a little gloomy. Once i hopped onto the zepplin and saw Ogrimar WOW, it is very nice. Also, i had a chance to raid the night elves (who seem like a bunch of friendly guys image) and their area is AMAZING. I love the colours they used. Let's see, the jungle area was also very nice indeed, and so was the human forest.

For graphics i have to say i'm impressed. They managed to make it look very appealing without raping the whole area with bump mapping and high polygons.

I also liked the graphics.  I am not particularly thrilled by the character models and the lack of customization.  The gameplay in general seems pretty good though.

I think they lowered the customization because PvP and the main cities will lag too much trying to load every characters special appearance.

I am disappointed with WoW. I was looking foward to an original MMORPG, and I thought Blizzard was going to take up the mantle and step away from the rest of the EQ clones by developing the next generation MMORPG, they certainly had the funds and the reputation to take that risk. But sadly they did not rise to the occassion and actually developed a game that more closely resembles EQ than any other MMORPG clone in develpment. On a positive note, the game is very polished and is virtually lag free, but I am not going to leave my current MMORPG, which I've invested so many painstaking hours in leveling my characters, just to play WoW and start the Grind anew. I cringe at the thought. Oh well, maybe one day a dev team will come up with an MMORPG with originality, until then I will keep on waiting.

Blizzard never ever promised groundbreaking game play. Their promise was to perfect what was already there.

But here's the thing. You mentioned "grind" and "painstaking hours" in the game you're playing. Well guess what, bucko, all the testers are raving about how fun gameplay is, and how it doesn't feel like a grind. And when it comes down to it, wouldnt this very fact be the most groundbreaking step of all?

Well I just got into the stress test for WoW about 3 days ago. I can honestly say this is one of the greatest MMO's I have ever played.

    Pro's

Grind - so very nice. It doesn't take years and years to lvl. You actually have fun playing and you don't fall asleep at your keyboard killing in the same area for 2-3 days.

Quests - there are plenty of them. And actually most of them are interesting and fun. You actually feel like your playing an RPG. Some may not like this but I love it

Latency - None for me whatsoever. Also I'm on the "Stress Test" server. There's server side lag but computer side, I don't lag. Even with about 100 people in the general area I don't lag. The only time I do is when I first enter the world, which is common for most people because your computer needs to load up the info of course. What's its cache'd its all good from there.

PVP system - Nice that's all I have to say (if your on a pvp server).

Support - You can post on the forums and 99% of the time a moderator will see it and actually do something about it.

    Fun factor - a 10

    Con's

Graphics - Not the best of course but. If you think about it Blizzard is trying to keep to what Warcraft 3 looked like, but I also believe that they have their graphics like this in order to have most people playing their games. I know plenty of people who play with some pretty old video cards and they can't play some of the top games out right now, So the graphics are actually a good thing.

Sound - I don't like it too much. I guess I grew fond of Lineage 2 and being able to hear every little sound. (lineage 2 sucks by the way)

That's all I pretty much have on it. I'm very excited for the official release within the next 5 months. It will be great to play.

Don't know why do you care about the graphics that much. Maybe it is not so beautiful as L2 but it is surely not ugly. As far as the rest is concerned, I don't know why you didn't mention crafting system so far, it is just amazing.

  • JackdogJackdog Member UncommonPosts: 6,321

I think the cartoony graphics fit WoW perfectly and while the game is nowhere near the second coming of christ or anything it is a nice stable game. So far I hjave played a Human warrior up to lvl 10 and while I am not overly impressed neither has the game turned me off completly, I think the games biggest problem is that it has been over hyped.

I am still up in the air on whether I shall purchase at release though. There are a hell of a lot of the Bnet Kiddies in the beta and while some of them won't pay to play at release it does seem like there is going to be more of them  in this game in proportion tp it's size.

    I miss DAoC

Um...yes it would be groundbreaking if in fact there was no levelgrinding,  but unfortunately the levelgrind mechanics are implemented. Just because you seem to level quicker does not mean there is no grind, bucko. Now if you like the EQ gameplay then you will enjoy WoW, because there is virtually no difference. Oh and a word to all you Blizzard fanboys, if the North dev team would have stayed with Blizzard, WoW would not be the EQ clone it is today, it would be more akin to Guildwars. When the North team left so did the the talent.

Once i made it to the barrens i felt like i was walking around in an ultra zoomed in wc3 map which was cool for immersion factor... There are plenty of quests and things going the attacking centaur quest is cool however id still like to see more to increase the immersion factor... all in all its gonna be a succesful addictive game played by many and all the eq2 fanboys on this site are gonna have to eat crow.
