I have a pentium 4 3.00 GHz processor, I just ordered four 1 gig sticks of DDR2 RAM(Kingston / I previously had 1 gig), and I am about to order the 8800 GT. Should this allow me to run pretty much any game on the market at pretty high settings? My computer got out-dated pretty quickly, and I finally decided to upgrade, any feedback you have is appriciated.

does your motherboard support pci-express? czu 8800GT is pci-express..
i think your cpu is the bottleneck.. so dont expect to run in high.. rather in medium.
You need a new CPU.
if the brain can't think worth a shit, how is it going to send the messages to your gfx card etc.
quaad core chips are really cheap now. Buy one and a new motherboard for your shiny 8800. Don't waste it with a shit Processor
Oo noes you got an 8800 GT, you need one of these to run it.
One of these
cheap for who? A duel core will do fine. Since you have already ordered those parts just wait to see how they do before you go and order a new cpu.
Hold on Snow Leopard, imma let you finish, but Windows had one of the best operating systems of all time.

Well you should be able to see my computer specs , to give u an idea of what i can run , i play Age of Conan on max settings with AA x16Q and no slow down what so ever , also play Crysis on high settings with 4x AA and no slow down , and thats running at 1680 x 1050.
Yes, it has the PCI 16x slot, and it's PCI Express 2.0 so I should be in business.

The RAM arrived yesterday, I installed it today and things seem to be fine. I now have 4 gigs in my computer, but XP only uses 3, correct?
Anyhow, I was wondering what kind of video card would be best, and if upgrading my CPU was a neccesity, any help is appriciated.
32 bit o/s's will only use 3 gigs (3.something) of ram.
and the cpu SHOULD be the next thing to get upped (they are already cheap /ignore people who say get quad core, they are NOT relevant in the realm of gaming). 8800's (well video cards in general) will only get cheaper the longer you wait.
remember too it is all kind of a waste if you dont get vista (the informed choose 64 bit) since you wont be running dx 10. so nomatter how high you put the settings you CANT compare dx9 to dx10.
-plus with vista 64 since you can use all 4 gigs of ram you can just kill the swap file entirely.
So, I should get Windows Vista (Which version?), up my processor(any cpu's you suggest?), and eventually purchase an 8800(or possibly something higher?)?

Get xp proff 64bit unless you just have to have dx10.

NO. Do not get 64bit xp ....... if you play as many games as i do, half of the games on the market are NOT compatible with 64bit xp. Considering a very small population has it, there has never been as much support for it as vista 64 bit.

xp proff has a 32 bit folder that helps 32 bit programs run. Also any major release would have the drivers for 64bit.

if you are upgrading to play games that came out 8-10 years ago you are kind of retarded anyways. not to mention the fact that theres this compatibility mode thing in windows.
since most people upgrade to play CURRENT or FUTURE games they would want dx 10 since it is now the standard, and we get 64 bit vista because:
1. the 64 bit platform handles data better than the 32 bit platform and thus takes less of a hit USING dx10.
2. being 64 bit also lets it use more ram (32 bit caps @ about 3 gigs).
3. it is PROGRESS, some people are just afraid of it *coughADOBEcough*.
anyone who hates on vista at this point:
1.has never used it and is just spreading hype they know nothing about.
2.has not used it since sp1 (xp sucked till it got its first sp also)
3.does not know how to use vista (they own a computer, they dont use it as it is intended. they just install software and expect it to go with 0 tweaking/customizing/thought, like installing a game and never once looking @ the option screen)
4.does not care about getting the most out of high end games.
5.is pissed that they cant just download it and get full functionality.
@Zoobie-just pop over to newegg.com and grab vista 64 premium OEM version. it will lock the serial number to whatever mobo you install it on. then look @ cpu's by socket (always use advanced or guided search on the left side of the screen) and start eliminating things, possibly nix quad cores and server cpu's (though server ones are usually more stable they are always more expensive) and get the fastest you can afford. grab a new video card if that suits you or put it off.
either way once you have installed vista and let it do its updates (dont forget sp1) pop over to blackviper.com and go through his vista sp1 configurations AND vista tweaks. mind you blackviper is a gamer so using his "tweaked" profile should work perfect (does for me). after that (assuming you are using 4 gigs of ram go and disable the swap file. after doing those 3 things a vista machine runs almost the same as its XP counterpart.
the things that the pc "owners" dont like about vista are the things that are there to protect them (if they didnt need the protection they would be smart enough to disable them). uac, indexing, windows defender, etc. ARE all really annoying, so simply turn them off....do i care about 3d icons? nope=gone, sidebar? nope=gone, see through windows? nope=gone. snipping tool? FK YEA!!=keep. thats how a pc USER deals with it, just turning it on and saying "this sucks" doesnt suit me.
edit- just to really stress this point- IF you are going to upgrade the mobo AND the processor install vista AFTER because the serial will be locked into the first board you install it on (thats what OEM does) cant really tell you whats best for you in that department (lack of info) but if you can stick a dual core on the current board i think i would do that. again OEM serials stick to the mother board, it can never be used on another motherboard (well ok it might be possible but im sure i couldnt discuss it here).
Thank you for the information. How does this look?

not everything thats supposed to help, actually helps. And no not all major releases support xp 64bit..... if you notice for game reqs, there is usually vista 32/64 and xp ..... not xp 32/64. You can get xp 64 and try it, but dont say i didnt warn you.

not a fan of asus, but we all have our little peaves. everything else is looking upto snuff' though (love MSI)
for the record (aside from crappy adobe products that i dont even use) the 1 thing i couldnt get running on vista 64 was the audio drivers for my old xbox controller (the big black kind that real men use not the little s version) solution=sold out and bought a 360 controller instead which vista welcomed like a long lost relative.
the n52, the g15, mx 518, cyber sniper stinger, n52 TE all worked without a hitch. the ONLY game i havent got running is ff vii which was a pain to get to run on xp also. i pretty much try every piece of trash that falls out the gaming cheute (long enough to vomit, shudder, or declare gay) and have NO clue where people are getting all of these compatibility issues. ofcourse i didnt run out and grab vista either, i waited till 1 month before sp1 came out (i learn).
