This looks really promising. And already seeing how fast FunCom is able to push out patches and reading about the upcoming updates, the future of AoC looks bright.

You are not a subscriber until you actually purchased your first month. That being said this is just the number of people who have bought, installed and using their free month. This will take a bit of a dive when the first "paid" month rolls through.
that's low IMO. they won't keep 500k+. the subscriptions on AoC will dip down to 250k in 4-5 months i bet.
500k bought and registred the game, this is NOT 500k active players. Peoples need to stop making up numbers. 500k means NOTHING if half of them cancel before the end of the free month.
Dipping down to 250k still is considered successful in my book. Look at EQ2 .... I believe their numbers were similar and it's still going. Hell, maybe in a year when the game is actually completed subscriptions may rise.....
actually buying and registering a MMO does make you an active player. that isn't a made up number.
i agree on half canceling in the first 1-3 months though.
Half cancelling would be a success.
Well no registration does not make you an active player. In fact you could register never have played.
The best numbers to know will be:
1) boxes sold
2) average concurrent users
3) subscriptions
Each for their own reasons since they indicate different things. Average concurrent users is the most likely to show activity, ie. active players. So swithcing the title of this post to say active players instead of subs like it did previously still misses the mark.
All we know right now is boxes sold. Probably all we will know for a long time. And we will only get official sub numbers of AoC hits the millions (in other words they will only say that to brag and make it look like the in thing to do, like WoW does)
Are there no internet services, net programs that can monitor and see what people are playing and make of that statistics? (edit spelling)
Another prime example of how people just believe whatever they're fed without questioning it. I remember saying something similar about the DX10 a while ago.
what we really need though is a general API that all these MMO's have to use so we can get data from them. that would be ideal, but blizzard, funcom, etc. won't do that because active subscribers is the make or break for them and it is too risky.
here is Conans page on xfire
www.xfire.com/games/aoc/Age_of_Conan_Hyborian_Adventures/
it is currently # 7, at it's peak on June 01 it was #4. Looks like it is dropping pretty steady among the hard core players who are seem to be the biggest users of xfire. It's going to be interesting to see what happens this week.

Some survey companies are doing this, but are charging a lot for their statistics.
From the Xfire information, I am guessing that AoC right now has 165,000 active users.
500k active users are the ones who bought the game and activated their key to play for a month (or less ) i dont understand how u cant call them active players since they have bought and played the game for at least an hour
500k not succesfull? hmm lets see what game got 500k+... we have WoW, Runescape, Lineage 1 and 2... and thats it. not succesfull? ^_^
theres no game that got even near 500k this year, Lotro was the last one with 150-200k at launch.. however i expect at least 50% to quit after the first month (for aoc)
MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)
Down 2 spots from yesterday as well
There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
Let's assume that the people who bought the game and did not like it are not playing as much as they did in the beginning.
Then there are those who bought the game after the initial rush, which even things out a bit.
I would say that the xfire stats actually look promising for the future of AoC.
(Last week it "dropped steadily" from 40389 to 42149 hours played.)
yet everyone believes blizzard when they say they have 10 million. Blizzard never had any where near 10 million players playing, i would say 5 million at the very most.
jackdog what mmo are you going to hate on next, we get it ,you don't like age of conan so please go back and play that horrible lotro game that you hold in such high regard. I just can't take an opinion from person who says "lotro is a good game" seriously.
Lotro is a good game seriously.
EXACTLY. AoC is way to new to even estimate numbers yet. We'll see in a year what the numbers look like. Every game has record breaking numbers a month or two after release, it doesn't mean anything.
what you fail to notice was that at launch it was 90, 000, June 01 it had almost 84, 000, and even on the 8th it had over 60, 000.
Most everyone I know who plays MMORPG's bought the game. About half my LoTRO guild bought it and we started a chapter there but all but one of us are back in LoTRO and or EQII now with no intention of playing Conan again until FC gets around to fixing the problems and adding some content. For a week or so though we thought the game was great, it just has no staying power however.

....is to be taken with a pinch of salt
It amazes me how people can look at a graph that very clearly represents a downward trend and claim that there is no downward trend. Not a lot of economics majors 'round here, I suppose.
500.000 people bought the game, maybe this is true.
But we will have to see how many cancelled before the end of first month.
I know i did
