Building on secondary class

VarvulfVarvulf Member Posts: 9

What I mean is  setting up a character class by secondary only. I prefer the warrior style of play, but always had "energy" issues until I started experimenting with my builds a bit.

My latest character started in Nightfall as an Elementalist/Warrior who uses a sword and shield. All of my attributes went into swordsmanship and tactics plus a few into energy storage to get my energy  to an acceptable level. As equipped I have a 616 health and 68 plus 3 bars of regen energy warrior. Needless to say I no longer have any energy shortage on my character, Over the last few days I have played this character almost exclusively, and been having a blast, lol.

The skills combination used come from Nightfall, Factions, Prophesies, and EotN.

I was just wondering if others are doing this, and how happy, or not, you have been with the results.

This sticky is about picking your secondary class. However regarding your suggestion for having elemtentalist primary and warrior secondary:

    • Armor: As the frontliner you'll be you will be the one most commonly targeted by the mobs, thus you have to have a lot of armor; being elementalist means you only got 60 Al! Warriors on the other hand got 80 AI and an addition +20 Al versus physical damage. You will be frequently targeted, and being easy to take down then - as you are when being an elementalist - will prove dangerous for both you and your team.
    • Damage: Your damage will naturally be inferior to a warrior's damage since you lack the ability to add runes to swordsmanship to your elementalist. Additionally Strength provides additional armor penetration that increases the damage dealt.
    • Energy: There is a reason why you got Adrenaline skills for your Warrior that doesn't cost energy; Warrior's were made to spam adrenaline skills rather than energy ones.
    • Overall: Being another primary than the one you mainly use skills for is in 99% of the cases stupid, worthless and reduces your own effectiveness. You lack damage, you're easier to kill and you shouldn't have energy problems if you play your warrior right.

See this build for a perfect example of how a warrior bar should look; all except one skills are adrenaline based and the one costing energy isn't used very often. If you've got energy problems on your warrior then remove some energy skills in favor of adrenaline ones.

Thank you for your concise explanation of why this does not work, and yes I do have standard warriors as well. This was more about trying something different. As an example, I set up the Eotn monk hero as an axe warrior, but kept Healing Breeze, Resurrect and Heavens Delight on him.

During gameplay in both EotN and the southern shiverpeaks he has proven to be very effective at both killing and healing. A plus is that the NPC's see him as a monk and go after him only to be met with extreme damage from the murakai's axe he uses.

Even though this build should not work logically, for the very reasons you stated, it has proven very effective. This character is 5 days old and has finished both the Norn and Vanguard storylines in Eotn, as well as collecting Ursan, Raven and Vulven blessings. Currently making his way to Vabbi in Nightfall. Mostly just about fun, and so far this has been a very fun character to play with.

The real test of a build comes when you take it into hard mode or FoW/UW.

It is very possible to complete any of the campaigns in normal mode with a sub-optimal build, especially for someone who'se had some experience.

Your build will have some advantage in normal mode, where mobs will see you as a "squishy" and primarily target you due to your close proximity. Which allows your considerably more efficient henchmen (I can't see you being successful without a full party list) do the real damage while monks are relatively free to heal you.

In hard mode, where mobs are far better to ignore the front line and go directly for the monks. Without a constant stream of healing you'd better get well acquainted with the nearest res shrine.

Once again, I am not claiming this as the latest and greatest build of the day. After over two years of playing GW with "Clasic" buildsand finishing all campaigns I tried something totally out of the ordinary JUST FOR THE FUN OF IT, and was  surprised at how it turned out and wondered if others had tried anything remotely similar.

As to being familiar with the res shrine, and needing a mega-party for support  in normal mode.... Party consisting of heros Ogden, Jora and Pyre with Cynn, Herta, Eve and Lina henchmen went out into the Varajar Fells area of EotN with this unlikely warrior and I believe cleaned out the area with 437 enemies slain. Finishing at a +10  morale with only 2 death.

Another abnormal group that  was a lot of fun was this character with Jora, Ogden and Duncoro teamed with a classical warrior running the hammer warrior hero with  Olias and Master of whispers both set up as MM.

With 20 minions following us around it looked like a small army on the move as we depopulated everything between the command post and the floodplain in Nightfall, for no other reason than just  the fun of it,

I haven't tried Hard Mode with this character yet, but will have to try it just for fun before getting rid of it to try something else, probably even more unlikely to succeed, lol.

Thanks for your input . You make very valid statements as to why nobody would want to do this on a serious character. But if you have an empty slot and want a break from normal play try some unlikely combinationsof your own and hopefully you will be as surprised with the results as I have been.

    Happy Gaming to All

I have done this before yes.  Also, try the assassin as your secondary for something even more fun.

Sounds like fun, I never thought of using an assassin. Now that you mention it I am already thinking about how to set mine  up as soon as this one  finishes up.  Look forward to trying it out, Thanks for the idea.
