Is roleplay so hard to ask for?

glordglord Member UncommonPosts: 338

Every MMORPG dev out there seems to have no respect for the RP community of MMORPGs. They would rather implement instance after instance, raid boss after raid boss, so on and so forth than put in a few features to make the roleplayers happy. Seriously, all the '1337' gamers want to do is get some retarded pixilated items to show people on their retarded pixilated character and say "Oh look! I have the same thing 5,000 other people of my class have on this server so I'm better than everybody but the others who have it!".

As usual, when I'm posting here I'm posting to request any games that have an established RP community. EVE has an RP community but I just find the game not to my taste. I'm giving CoH a try -again-. Is there something out there for us RPers? I would like to give UO a try but to my knowledge the, Europa is the only server good for RP and I am not on the same time schedule as those people.

Well, you can forget about Age of Conan. It's just basically WoW with a different skin.

If you are looking for RP over combat, you might want to try the open-ended LARPs within Second Life. A bit less polished than you may be used to in standard MMORPGs, but the RP can be very interesting.

it is not so hard..all depends on which kind of game you are for..for example, if you like lovely games..maybe could try hello kitty online. if you like war games, please try WOW..

hello kitty online??haven't heard it i just though it is a brand of a kids clothing or a kids toys

It really depends on what you expect. Too many here seem to have too high expectations when it comes to RP in MMORPGs. Yes, yes, we would all like a perfect community of RPers which works like well-oiled clockwork, but until someone with resources and true passion for RP makes a move, it will be a far-off dream.

The thing is - you can RP almost anywhere, as long as it's on a RP-server. It won't ever be perfect, but it is something. And when you're on a RP-server, RP-haters can just shut their mouths. I've RPed on WoW, Moonglade server (supposedly one of the worst RP servers out there) and had countless hours of fun. Wherever you choose to RP, you have to be prepared to meet everything from nude, dancing lolzers to RP-haters to elitists who could write books on their own rules. You gotta deal. End of story. If you can't, just give up the idea of finding teh awesum RP communites and switch to other forms for RP.

If I were you though, I would pick a MMORPG that fits my taste, sniff around a bit and see which RP-server is more or less decent, and go for it. Find a small community on that server and make your own fun.

Yes, I did exactly what Ceallach says. I was looking for an MMO for a while, which suits my taste. I found, there is none. All of them are just stupid and very boring level and item hunting games. I don´t know, what is wrong with people and why they spend money on this sort of game for more than just a view days. In the beginning it´s nice, to watch the grafics, if they are good. But  what, when you have ssen them? Is it really fun to someone, to get Ubersword number 100 and after this, number 101?

I love to play with other people (especially role-play with other people), but I do not like, what you have to do in the such games besides talking.

Now I don´t try it anymore. I just quit playing MMOs. I am sorry for the people, but I don´t miss the games at all :D.

  • CaellachCaellach Member Posts: 25

Well, that's different, Lilalu. You seem to dislike the content of the games as much as the community, so no wonder you have that attitude towards MMORPGs. It's all fine though; I guess this gaming-style isn't for everyone. Methinks you have to enjoy the game-content to actually RP in any MMO. It's impossible to stray completely from the game itself and just use it as an advanced chatroom for RP. To use me as an example again - I would be truly bored if WoW was without RP, but sometimes, when the people from my community were offline and there was nothing to do, I was completely fine with following the game (questing, instancing, farming) on my own.

  • LilaluLilalu Member Posts: 68

The problem is, all online games have more or less the same kind of content. That´s fine for people who like it of course and therefore nothing is wrong with this games. The problem is, there are no other online games for people, who enjoy a different kind of playstyle. Game developers should be a little more creative. There are so many different kinds of single-player games. Why not bring more different gaming principles online?

What I miss is a game without being forced to play the role of a hero, who is constantly slaughtering boring monsters and gathering items.

For example the idea of game like A Tale in the Desert is great! Solving a task like building cities and in the end maybe even a pyramid together with others is very interesting an a lot of fun in my eyes! And yes, I like to play single-player strategy games a lot, like e.g. Ceasar IV. What I like here is buidling cities and having a healthy economy. By the way, this games have a lot of players. They are by far no niche products!

So why is there only one such MMO (with very very bad grafics!) and why are there so many many "monster slaying" MMOs? It would be possible to have a lot of different settings (e.g. medieval, having to build a castle, ancient Rome, science fiction ...).

What I think: The old argument between role-players and non-role-players often is an argument between action players and non-action-players as well (all combinations are possible, like e.g. action-role-player or non-action-non-role-player). I´d call myself a non-action-role-player.

In the usual kind of game for players like me, there is nothing to do. Only if we get a glimpse of RP sometimes, we are happy. But this is so rare, it is not worth paying for and it´s to much wasted time to run through the otherwise boring game worlds, to look for it.

I think, developers forget about millions of potential players, who enjoy cooperative building or problem solving more than action and fighting!

LoTRO seems to have a decent RP'ing community I believe on the Landroval server.  Never tried it myself but you can actually mark (change color of characters Name) yourself as RP'ing.  There appears to be plenty of people RP'ing in that game.  But I also think it's how you want to present yourself.  If you want to RP you should be creative enough to do just that, without all the bells and whistles provided by the devs.

Anyway if I were you I would check out some of the RP posts in LoTRO.  See if that is to your liking.

  • CaellachCaellach Member Posts: 25

Ya, you've told me before. And I agree with you, it's such a damn shame. But trust me, even for us who love to run around as heroes it's almost impossible to find a decent MMORPG. Y'know, I've tried out and reviewed at least 12-15 different MMORPGs, worked on my own before my graphic card said it could go to hell, and finally came to the decision that - WoW - of all games had the best premises for RP. I'm back where I started.

Ironically, the games with best RP-potential are the singleplayer ones. Perhaps an online version of The Settlers - Rise of an Empire would be something for you.

And maybe I'll one day get my multiplayer version of Oblivion. Until then, I'll just try to slip into a small community somewhere again. It's the best solution for those who want to RP in MMOGs right now.

  • LilaluLilalu Member Posts: 68

Yes, an online version of the settlers (of course I own the single player version :D) would be great! But it should not be the way, one plays against others. I´d rather role-play one of the settlers, work as a woodcrafter, fisherwoman or whatever and add to the success of the commuity as a whole.

To WoW: I have tried it and I hate it! Not the game itself, that´s boring, but role-playing would be possible. But it has the worst community of all the games, I tried. I got insulted, laughed at, may char got sexually offended and every single role-playing event we tried to do was disturbed by some crazy idiots.

It was almost the same in LoTRo. In europe there are special role-playing servers and the situation is somewhat better than in WoW. But still there are to many idiots and to less is done about them.

No, I will never ever spend money on such lousy support for role-players! I think, if people had more proud and would not pay for almost any bullshit, just to be able to play online, developers would have to think about better games and better support. But of course, as long as we pay for the lousy games, there is no reason for them to think about better ones!

As far as role-playing, the only MMO I've tested/played in the past 11 years where it was even focused upon was "Nexus The Kingdom of the Winds". The entire game is community based (to the point where it is almost player run), and generally revolves arround role-play. Its been out for more than a decade, and has a small and strong community. The GMs are also very active in the game, constantly bringing events and updates, on an almost biweekly basis; and every event is part of the game's roleplay. I doubt any other MMO in the gamelist can compare as far as rp, but because of the graphics/some other aspects, many new age gamers are immediately turned off.

I also ran into quite a few people who would role-play heavily in FFXI. Perhaps you wont see it widespread, but if you search for certain guilds/clans in games I'm sure you can find those that will rp with you ^^.

Yeah your best bet is Landroval server in LOTRO. There are a bunch of people there that RP and put on parties etc. The music system in LOTRO helps out alot as well as the putfit system/housing, etc.

Funny, I didn't see anymore rp going on in the rp servers on WoW than on normal servers usually. I had so much trouble just finding people to role play with I just gave up. I prefer forum role play anyway though.

If everyone was running around looking for RP there wouldn't be much actual RP now would it?

Believe it or not, Anarchy Online has roleplay. With the recent addition of the /rp command, players can see which other players would like to engage in it, and I've been seeing RP happening much more frequently in vicinity. There is also the Channel42 on RK1. Not to mention the existence of some orgs which are all about RP - for example, Society of Salvation, and Shattered Dreams.

I'm afraid in a mmorpg the only "roleplaying" your gonna get is whatever people type into the chat channels. Other than that its all gonna be about gaining levels and farming phat loot. I dont think there are any mmos in which you can do anything other than that. They are all static gameworlds which you cant really affect or change so although you might have a great roleplaying idea in your head there really isnt any way to actually bring it into the game. Like I said you can just type whatever you like into the chat channels and pretend you are Lord Zarkon the mighty necromancer or some other fanciful character but I'm afraid in an mmo you are really no different to any of the other millions of cookie-cutter characters who all have equal access to all the same experiences and stuff you have.

Basicly to sum-up roleplaying is not really possible in an mmo as your experience is never going to be unique. You can have the same level of roleplaying in an mmo as you can with MSN Messenger because thats all an mmo really is - a simple single player game that can be played by lots of people at the same time and has an instant messenger attached to it.

If you want roleplaying then you are unlikely to find it in a computer game. I would recommend playing a proper roleplaying game with a group of friends. Then you are free to put your imagination to use, being able to do whatever you like and actually do things that effect the game world your character lives in. Otherwise I would just give up on the roleplaying aspect if I were you as you just arent going to get it. I'm afraid your just gonna have to grind away with the rest of the online masses.

hey, the answer is affirmative...there are many games now. however, there is no outstanding game...

    RP isn't hard

Light some candles, get in the mood.

Play your favorite mmo, dressed as your character.

Buy replica weaponry and hide it under your bed

Buy AoC and roll on a dedicated RP server

it depends on what kind of game you are looking for..normal ones...there are too many many many...special and good enough ones...if you find, tell me..thanks..

If you're looking for a completely immersive RP experience, i.e. no out-of-character chat or names, you're best bet is likely to find a tight niche community devoted to providing that kind of environment.  As for UO, there's a free player-run server named Sylvan Dreams that has a lot of roleplaying going on.  You can find a guide for how to get it setup here.

If you're looking for a newer, more active game, I've had great experience with Everquest 2 on the Lucan D'Lere RP server. It's certainly not without some of the usual not-so-friendly-to-RP elements of MMOGs, but in a world set with such rich, colorful lore and friendly people it can be easy to look past that.

Hope you find what you're looking for!

    Hi,

I ain't sure if this is what you are looking for, but if it is, feel free to drop me a private message.

    I know a place where:

Players role play in the sense that they take up a place with their character names in greek/roman/etc mythology. The era of the game is more or less during the "lord of the rings" era.

As you play along, role playing earns you fame points calculated by the Game Masters (Who role play as Gods) and us players role play as warriors, or evil helpers of the dark lord.

The points then earn you special quest which are different depending on the points you get. It also brings you closer (with your own background creation of your character story line) to possible entry into the hall of fame which includes you being address as a Lady Vanessa Priestess of ABC or Sir Tom Guardian of XYZ.

All of the above is NOT part of the game system. But a nature of how players player in the game cultivated by 2 years of patient in encouraging role players in the community. Some players choose to play evil fraction while others defend the poor or young by going with the good faction.

No abusive Pking is tolerated as policy are strictly in place that all PKing must be role played out.

If what I have mentioned above is what you are looking for, please drop me a pm. If not, that would mean I have misread this topic and I offer my sincerest apology for this post.

    Best Regards

    edm005

PS: The server is free to play (no p2p nothing. just free all the way)
