I am a returning mmorpg gamer. In the past I played Everquest and I enjoyed much of the game layout except the lack of solo-able progression.
I have looked over a few of the games posted here including Sword of the New World, Final Fantasy, and Ultima which seem like they might be good fits.
I am especially interested in multiple character control functionality(including external, or in-game, script building protocols would be even more ideal). I want to be able to hire or find npc helpers for populating my group for tackling more difficult encounters. I noticed that Sword of the New World has something similar to this, any comments?
My ideal gaming environment will have the following qualities:
Solo friendly
High player character magnitude, but not high space density(players need space to gain experience); instanced zones are acceptable
Full-PvP with no looting or at least PvP zones/object-based(by agreement)
Level and skill/spell-based progression; full skillset preferrably in excess of 500 hours
Rich equipment set, but little repair engine interruption; my equipment shouldn't rot/deteriorate
Environmental objects should be movable and/or destroyable; storming the castle should require breaking through the gates.
Melee styles preferrable, such as defensive, offensive, mixed, etc
Graphics aren't important to me, but I would prefer some sort of visual stimulus which indicates that combat is in progress or that a lightning bolt is shrieking toward its target
Alternative experience systems would be nice; experience for scoring a hit or healing a friend in danger rather than receiving experience only at the moment of a kill
Random npc loot generator which includes antique items; similar to legacy D&D with magical weapons/equipment dropped by non-quest boss mobiles(extra surprises can be neat when identifying unknown loot at the local tradeshop)
Thank you to anyone who has taken the time to browse through this list. Game on.
Partial matches are welcome.

Sword of the New World is the only MMO that I know of that has control of multiple characters, unless you have two computers with different accounts running, which is against most games TOS. In an MMO its assumed you'd find other players to help you tackle tougher challenges.
You could try WoW. The game is almost entirely soloable and there is some item decay but its a minor deal at the most. The game has millions of players but you can hit max level without talking to any of them. Has a former EQ player it should feel familiar to you as well. The only MMO I know of where you can smash things and such scripted events is Dungeons and Dragons Online. But you really have to group in order to get anything done.

The game you are looking for does not exist, but different aspects of what you're looking for does exist in some games.
WoW is solo friendly.
Many MMOs have full PvP, bur rule-sets are always different. WoW, DAOC, UO, CO, L2, AC (DT) are some examples of games that include PvP. However, you'll notice that each game has a different rule set of how PvP is conducted.
Rubies of Eventide has an interesting progression styles, as does AC. UO is probably the closest to your suggestion, though.
Mythos and AC are two games that come to mind with a 'rich equipment set'.
I don't know any games that have a modifiable enviroment, but darkfall would be the closet I could think of.
With that much said, my best bet would be to look around the site, read some forums on games that catch your eye and try them.
Hope this helps at all.
Blessings,
MMO migrant.
Have you given Guild Wars a shot? The game is pretty much all instanced, and there are certainly PvP areas at your disposal. There's no equipment wear (in fact, as I remember, you don't have to ever repair your equipment). There are tons of character builds to explore (2 professions for every character, a primary and a secondary) and the game boasts over 1000 skills to pick from. On that note, there are melee classes like the Warrior, the Assassin, and the Dervish (I think maybe some others too), but you have the option of combining them with magical or ranged classes.
There's a strategic element as well: you're only allowed to carry 8 skills at a time, so different environments and monsters call for different skill distributions.
If you get GW: Nightfall, you'll have access to Heroes, which are customizable NPCs that you can summon to help you out with soloing.
Oh yea, I forgot to mention that the graphics are really good and the specs required to run at max settings are VERY reasonable.
The only significant downfall is that the game is VERY story oriented (but for you that may be a good thing). Creating new characters after your first one works well if you buy all 3 GW campaigns but is otherwise VERY repetitive.
I would also recommend WOW. I just got into that recently myself, and am totally loving it (10 million people can't all be wrong, can they?). The community is obviously huge, and despite the fact that you can apparently solo the whole thing, team play is more prevalent and encouraged than in GW.
But yea, for you I think GW would totally do it. Hope I helped!
