my general summing up of aoc is that if you mostly play in a group with your guildies and/or friends then you will enjoy it lots. if you plan to solo it, it can be the most tedious and frustrating experience you are ever going to have in a game.
the thing i am most let down by is the lack of social tools. the UI is the worst ever design for finding/forming groups - in fact its terrible in all chatting aspects. and the game itself doesnt have a central point to congregate at, and of course the instancing detracts from this.
i read somewhere when it was called mmo-lite - this is my opinion also.

Hehe I felt the opposite when I played. Soloing worked really well, but grouping was really annoying. But of course it's alot more fun playing together with others, but I'm gonna do it in a less frustrating game instead. :)

Woah...easy there killer. =) The review was pretty critical of all those points. And I'm sorry AoC didn't work out for you. It didn't work out for me either.

A very fair review, although only being a casual player I am a long long way from level 80, so I can't comment on the later sections of the game. I have the occasional graphics glitch but so far no problems with sound.

I agree with most of the points, but so far I am enjoying the game & would definitely say it is worth a try. Games are cheap & in the first month you should get enough enjoyment from it to justify the cost, at least in my opinion.

Anyway, thanks again for taking the time to write an objective review.

If you can't "Have your cake & eat it too", then how can "The proof of the pudding be in the eating"?

    Good Review.

I think it's important to remember, no new MMO is going to be perfect from a technical standpoint at release.

It's simply impossible for the BETA to simulate actual server loads.

    It should only get better.

Who the hell do you think you are?  Very pretentious!

I've never had the game crash, the only issue I have are the occasional lag spike to like 1k ms.  But otherwise, no issues.  It's not like everyone is having these technical issues....

Overall a fair review, i think.  Lots of unpolished areas and unfinished bits (hello all instances in Khopshef!!!) and gaps in questing.  Also, lack of armour model variety, and dungeons need tuning.  But, I'm still having fun enough, but we'll see if I stay past 1 month of resubbing.

    Ningen wa ningen da.

I am so tired of that argument! Yes, you can explain some things through that, but you cannot apply this to everything negative being said about a game. Nobody expects new mmo games to be perfect: bugs and glitches, lack of balance etc. are natural, however AoC has a plethora of features plain missing, and often those were the features Funcom used to advertise the game with. Plus some systems (like crafting, pvp) seem to been have slapped there at the very last moment with minimal effort and testing. And yes, I am sure those things will get fixed along the line, but you cannot excuse them by saying "it is a new mmo, what did you expect".

All I'm saying is, it's strangely coincidental that a review by a staff writer gets 100% praise and 0% negativity.
    EDIT:
A great example of this is fame. I'm not saying Cymdai is famous, but he has a status here on MMORPG.com which could = fame. Anyhow, ever wonder why the news covers a story for 2 weeks of a movie star that takes a crap and realizes there is no toilet paper, but a 6 year old girl dying of a rare disease might get 15 minutes of media lime light?

My apologies for hopping in on this exchange, it's not entirely you I'm responding to, just a general response type ballgame.

One of the main reasons I and others praise the Staff Writer is because he warned the consumer and offered advice to not invest in this product.."YET" Cym's a staple here as well.

Why? Because this site doesn't cater to you or me, it generates revenue from gaming companies and not you or me. Need reminder? Scroll up top and hit "Home" and describe what you see. MMO companies pay the bills around here and maybe, just maybe, it'll get bought for some tall coin down the road.

If you operated this site and a paid advertiser said "no negative review", there would be no negative review. Period....There Is even reluctance to denigrate a title as it might jeopardize potential future marketing investment. Trust the business...you Do not want a reputation for "telling it like it is" and advising consumers to not click on the add.

A quality title makes it much easier on them, but when a filthy, pathetic slap in the face game like AOC and their massive marketing campaign force lies, embellishment and deceptive reviews...A Staff writer looking to climb the ladder, gives an honest review..That's balls.

So this review gets mad props in that dept..It tells you the sheer pathetic nature of customer (you a customer?) service, the broken everything sieges, the abrupt end to quality post Tortage..while sparing the reader a novel of glitches, bugs and exploits.

Customers that laid out the 50 and have no "Staff Writer" position to lose can, have and will, with ease, destroy this game in a technical review. A simple copy/paste of the known bug issues would take up multiple screens. Folk's have been very kind thus far because we all want a killer quality product.

Cymdai's review was extremely kind and benign considering he's endured actually playing to 80. Cymdai had the luxury of purpose as well. The review.

<<Since you didn't quote my entire post, let me repeat why it does make a difference. Almost everything in his review was pointed out by either a hater or a fanboi, yet those reviews get thrown in the flame house and... >>

For myself, I'm not trying to win points here.  There is no perk that I know of or care about to being held in high regard by just about any forum site.

I see a lot of reviews on this forum and the honest attempts don't often get flamed.  It's the short ones with no elaboration and lots of absolutes that expect to be taken seriously that I have problems with, even if their points can be validated and agreed to with a little non-sarcastic and overblown context.

This was a long review and it has the distinction of being one that I agree with on almost every point.  It may be the best review of AoC to date.  I will definitely be looking for more reviews from the OP.  I give props where I feel they are due.

Reason I'm even saying this is because while his review was definately complete and covered all areas, from good to bad, truth is, most of his review had been pointed out by either a hater or a fanboi.
Before anyone goes into frenzy mode and starts tainting this thread with the exact type of responses we don't need. Just take a moment to understand that while some people tend to use more colorful metaphors in their reviews, doesn't mean what they say isn't spot on.
    Just some food for thought...

Well I did'nt even notice he was a staff writer until I read your post and I still think think its one of the best reviews we've had on here so far.

This is a fair review trying to stress the good and the bad about Conan.  It's also one of the few to actually get past the first 20 levels which gives a better idea of the total game.

    Waiting for the next thing

Sadly, it's similar to Vanguard in many ways in my eyes. I hope it doesn't go down that road though... I will be sad to see another MMO tank within 3 months

You really should mention this in your review.  Any game is more fun when played with friends.

Better yet, for a truly objective review, create a character your friends don't even know about and write the review based on that character's experiences.

Since this is an MMO, a review written by someone who didn't play with friends wouldn't be accurate or representative of someone's experience in the game.  It's important that when reviewing an MMO you DO play with friends because that's what most people do.

Maybe if he had made a character on a separate server and "made" friends, but I still think more people start playing with friends than make friends after they start playing.

Point being, it's more accurate of a review this way.

I'm not sure where you get your facts; I suspect you assume most other players are like yourself and generalize from there.  But according to The Daedalus Project, only about 42% of people play in groups for social reasons.

But none of that has anything to do with my point.  What I was saying was that in order to get a feel for how fun the game mechanics are in their own right, you have to experience them without the crutch of friendship to carry them.

You are guaranteed to have fun in a group with people you know and like.  But it takes a truly well-designed game to deliver a good time to someone who is playing alone or in pick-up groups.

well i found this to be a perfect review of the game. it explained everything that myself and many other people had prblems with as well as some of the good aspects that do work. thanks for being honest here and not candy coating every word.

    An excellent review.

If it wasnt for the pretty graphics and very good sound, my score would of dropped to under 50%.

The score will rise like you said over time. But not by much. Theres to many fundamental things missing or termanilly broken to ever make this a good mmporg.
