Picking the MMO for the summer and maybe beyond...

UbinusColUbinusCol Member Posts: 30

Hey everyone. I will be staying at my college campus over much of the summer, doing research. So, apart from that full-time job, I will have some extra time to kill. My question is this: Which MMO should I get into?

Here's the deal at this point: I already asked myself this question about 3 weeks ago, and decided to try out LOTRO after going through the trial. I signed up for 3 months for $30 (as they currently have this good deal). I fiddled with some toons and more-or-less settled on the Captain. I'm currently level 21, and all seems to be going well...Except that I'm getting cold feet and the whole the-grass-is-greener-with-WOW thing.

I have some friends who are on campus over the summer as well, and they've gotten into WOW about 2 months ago. With that said, I of course feel slightly pressured to jump on the bandwagon and subscribe to that. But LOTRO is pulling me back a little with the subscription that I already have and the time that I put into it. To top it off, I started investigating EQ2, wondering what that's all about.

Here are my choices: 1) I could stick with LOTRO, which I might start to love once I get further into the game and find my place in the community; 2) I could get WOW, which I tried once and was intrigued by, and join my friends on campus (even though I'm a bit late); 3) Or I could get into EQ2, of which I know very little (except that there are a crapload of classes and races but that SOE is a shitty company).

FYI, I predict I would play for about 2 hours on weekdays and more time on the weekends, depending on whether my GF and I have anything special to do or w/e.

From what I read in forums, LOTRO is cool but not very innovative (which is kinda true),  WOW...well, WOW is WOW but has been around for a LONG WHILE and getting into it at this point might be hard, and EQ2 is pretty cool but their trial and support both suck.

This would be my first subscription game. I played GW and tried a ton of free crappy MMOs in the past.

So...any ideas? Thanks a bunch.

SOE is not a bad company :p and eq2 is older than wow by a few months :)

if you like to play with people you know then go with WoW

but if you dont minD then id say got to eq2 its a fantastic game and i love it. its more casuel friendly and has better pve content than both lotro and WoW

  • Seems like a lot of people are going back to ffxi on these boards on fairy. If ya hop over there, and like a difficult group based game it is fun. For 30 bucks and all 4 expansions + a month free it isn't all that bad of a deal for starting out either.

Never played FFXI, but I don't know if I could spend only 2 hours on an online game per day. Almost better off investing some time into some quality console RPGs to invest time in. Then again, could be my playstyle only and OP may not enjoy them as much as MMOs.

O, missed that just skimmed. Hmm, good quick few hours a day MMo. I hate to recommend WoW, but it does allow for the people who have no time to get some of the best gear. AoC seems to be a very quick leveling game as I know multiple people already max'd although the bugs are terrible from what I hear. Guild Wars is free and a mindless game, a lot of my friends enjoy that. CoX is great whether you go villain or heroes if you have a very limited time to play (Though it is an interesting style of play being superhero/villain and all). Hellgate: London while not really an MMo is a fun fpsrpg that doesn't require much time to learn, and can play through it at any time you have (Most quests are 10-30minutes).

Lastly my suggestion for a great MMo that doesn't require hours upon hours, but can be fun if you have a lot more hours at hand is LoTR:O. Some questing does require a lot of time with regards to instances, but all of those quests are easily bypassable, and the story line book quests (Though I know people who even skip these) are never more than 30-40 minutes with a good group which isn't very hard to find if you join a popular server.

Beyond those suggestions I don't know much else that would be available for the few hours able to be put in.

Thanks for the info, guys. So would anyone support the claim that WOW is kinda late to get into? Because that's an issue that my friends seemed to encounter. Also, isn't it true that I would need to spend A LOT of time to get good?

Also, just wondering, is there a main storyline to WOW? Or is it more of the "find your own quests" kind of thing? Thanks for the input.

Im going to try out EQ2 shortly, i am not being a WoW hater, but you should probably shy away from WoW. Its not a bad game, but its pretty linear, not very exciting, and if your like me the cartoony graphics really ruin the experience.

Well it depends; do you want to play with real-life friends that you know? Or start a game where it's just you and whomever you meet online. Personally I would play with my buds, you are almost guaranteed to have more fun that way.

DON'T TRY EQ2. It's run by SOE, a horrible excuse for a MMO company. Plus the games dying.

I'd go with WoW. You've got friends that already play it, and that right there, makes it more intriguing than any other game. It's never too late to start off in WoW. Or any MMO really. Unless they're dying or they've been screwed up entirely, like SOE did to SWG.

And if you want a feeling of having the game just coming out, start on a new realm. The newest one they have. When you choose your region, they usually have the newest realm listed as recommended.

Although its one of the oldest games out there. its still the one of the best. Try out Asheron's Call. Just take a peek at it. Its all I ask. goodluck

    Waiting: SWTOR,Aion, CO
    Played: AC, WoW, SB, EVE

I know I might be a bit late. but in regards to WoW. It's not too late to join. It's easy to pick up, and easy to level in now that they halved the amount of time it takes to get from 20-60. IMO it has been my favorite MMO I've tried yet. I'm a very casual gamer. Played WoW since day 1 of it's release, but NEVER have I end game raided. I've done everything else you can think of though. Recently I froze my account till the new expansion and have been searching for the last month for something new. I've done almost any trial out there. And where a lot weren't that bad, they couldn't keep my attention. Shaiya and LOTR:O came the closest. If i had to pay for another game right now it'd be LOTR:O, and if free I'd go with Shaiya.

I do play RO on a private server right now and it takes some time to get used to, but is decently fun and origonal looking.

WoW has a great story if you actually read everything.

Sorry, my post is kind of everywhere but yeah. Hope that helped a bit.

If you'd rather play with people you know IRL (which is generally my preference, if I were talking about me), then go to WoW. If your friends have only started in the last few months, catching up with them shouldn't be too hard, and they might be able to help you too. Catching up with endgame is something that comes along if you just keep at it, and worrying too much about where you're not at in the game can ruin any game. (Just a thought, you can ignore that last bit.)

If you're having fun in LoTRO and you've already paid for it, try making some friends in game and stick with it. It's not a bad game, even if it isn't too innovative. Maybe apply some counterpressure and try to get people you know IRL to join you there.

EQ2 is a good game too.  I like the freedom to mix classes and races as I see fit and I like the avatar customization. It has plenty of quests, and I am addicted to picking things up for collections (also a sort of quest that involves collecting items that spawn on the ground...)  Right now there are a lot of returning players starting new characters. The SOE hate is thick around here, but I have been playing EQ2 the last couple of weeks and having a good time-- but I am playing for free until the end of July, so you might want to take my thoughts on that with a grain of salt. Whether or not I'll subscribe at the end of my free time  is still way up in the air.
