So i was thinking of trying this out again having heard positive things about improvements since release.
Did they ever fix or upgrade the combat animations? That was actually a big sticking point w/ me, after the elaborate detail in WoW, EQ2, etc, i was very disappointed to see that pretty much all characters attacked and reacted like they had a rod in their spine. Supposedly it was just "temporary" at release.
So, are they improved now?

Animations are big stumbling point for Vanguard...
Well , like everything else...
You see , Vanguard was design by crazily mixed team of people with varying professional skills.
So some things are amazingly good done , while others are just sub par.
Like you have amazingly detailed terrain , but arhitecture is sub par.
Same goes for animations.
On the beggining you see character movement that is simply poorly done ( jumping for example)
But than you gain levels and see that every new combat skill has NEW ANIMATION.
.. Basically all what vanguard needs to fix is the bad parts, and those arent many.
Question , whether they are fixing it...
Well , they are working on new models. Thats for sure
Yeah they are working on new models which cant come soon enough Imo, funny thing is though if you try different classes some have really lame anims such as the Ranger , terrible !
But then roll a Monk and the Animations are quite cool .
Anyone else think the same ?
I've never had any complaints about my Goblin Rogue really, it's quite nifty how he twirls his weapons and things.
.............
There's some excellent animation, and some plain stuff. The monk and disciple are very kool, but the ranger could use some love as well as others. I think update #6 may fix some of these issues.
Come on let's be real here folks animations in VG suck arse compared to other more polished games. I hope SOE revamps them along with the character models. Those two updates to the game will go a long way toward making it more appealing to new subscribers. Also an improvement on in game combat sounds would be nice but I ain't holding my breath with that one.
Games I've played/tried out:WAR, LOTRO, Tabula Rasa, AoC, EQ1, EQ2, WoW, Vangaurd, FFXI, D&DO, Lineage 2, Saga Of Ryzom, EvE Online, DAoC, Guild Wars,Star Wars Galaxies, Hell Gate London, Auto Assault, Grando Espada ( AKA SoTNW ), Archlord, CoV/H, Star Trek Online, APB, Champions Online, FFXIV, Rift Online, GW2.
Game(s) I Am Currently Playing:
GW2 (+LoL and BF3)
Seeing as its still in development (yes its released but it ain't finished) things will be changed, things will be added and twisted, just takes time to do it.
I do, thats exactly right.
My first character was a ranger - absolutely terrible animations. (Gah!)
My second character was a monk, and compared to ranger the animations were far smoother. But then, I recall monk being gimped out, class-wise.
Very much looking forward to the new models and (hopefully) new animations to go with them (which seems likely).
I miss the good ol' days when nerds were actually intelligent.
Character animations and spell effects have always been my number 1 complaint, even above hitching and other performance issues.
I hated most how dumb my Druid looked in wolf form runnin' around in slow motion. I also didn't like the lack of telling animations in combat...i.e. noticeable block and parry of Dark Age of Camelot, or avatar wrenching a leg free when snared in Age of Conan.
In a WarCry interview late last year, or early this one, I don't remember, the team did mention wanting to strip out terrible animations and replacing them with better ones that they could be proud of. I doubt it's coming anytime soon, but I wouldn't even consider playing Vanguard again until it receives new animations.
I play in 1st person view, and my main is a healer, so I really don't care what the animations look like.
It's not so much the animations in and of themselves but the transitions between animations - characters just instantly jerk from one animation to the other, there seem to be no "neutral" positions that are transitioned between to give a sense of naturalness.
Plus, the animations are often out of sync with the combat (lag issues I think) - in fact that's probably the worst thing. You can forgive a bit of jerkiness if the gameplay feels precise, but Vanguard's just doesn't feel "solid" and precise - even though in terms of stats and spells and abilities, the combat is very nicely worked out and quite deep.
But in themselves some of the animations are actually quite cool - the sword fighting, the spellcasting, etc., just in little chunks, in themslves, are ok. They need to have "neutral" or "ready" positions to transition between.
WoW animations are very well done. As are many other games. City of Heroes in particular I think are very well done, with a great sense of weight and mass, very little "floatiness".
