Wait for the Nvidia GX200 cards?

My current desktop is so outdated that it would probably better to just start again from scratch (3GHz P4, 2Gb DDR RAM, ATI x1900pro AGP) and was wondering whether I should wait for the new cards. I'm not playing anything at the moment as there's  no new games released that I want to play. I was thinking of going back to EVE for a few months and that game doesn't require big rig to play.

What do y'all think?

The G200 cards are already out.  Its just the prices on the older 9xxx cards hasn't yet dropped.  I think for what you get the G200 cards are currently disappointing for the price ($400+).  You might want to wait until July for the HD4870.  So far the HD4850 gives good competition to the G260, and is priced $200 less.  The 4870 has more transistors, faster memory and clock speeds.  So it will definetly get heated in July, atleast in a price war perspective.

the HD4870 is a terrible card in comparison to the new 200 series. I have a 280 right now and we finally have something that beats Crysis. They are just starting to get the drivers out, so its just going to keep getting faster. The latest drivers added PhysX support and boosted performance by about 20-30%. I'd say wait a little bit for the price to drop and then grab one. I just upgraded from my Geforce 7950, what a difference! lol

Like I said, I would wait instead of jumping to conclusions.  The HD4800 drivers aren't even out and the low end card is competing with the G200's.  When you are speaking on purely the numbers, the HD3870 has more of nearly everything aside from Texture Units and memory then the G280.  The texture units has been the one bottle-neck in the card.  The HD4870 attempts to improve it while having the numbers on its side again.  Its already shown that the HD4850 outperforms the G260 on games using the Unreal 3 engine.  Unreal being the main middle-ware engine.

Also PhysX isn't really the most adopted physics processing, its Havok thats integrated into the 4800 cards.

I would go with a 9800GTX since you can get them for about $200 and they have great performance.

How many of you posting suggestions here actually have a clue what you are talking about? Other than Cleffy, of course. Seriously..if you are going to offer suggestions do some research first and offer a realistic valuable opinion.

A valuable well thought out opinion is useful, where as spouting out whatever the last thing you read that someone else said in a forum is utterly useless and counter productive.

for $200 right now you can get a 9800gtx that is outperformed by the $200 4850. How in the world does it make any sense what so ever to suggest someone go by a 9800gtx at this juncture?

If the 9800gtx drops to say, $150, then we are talking a good value, but until then.....
