Ok, where do I start? I guess from the beginning is a good place. I started playing mmorpg's way back when I was a kid. I played some text based online game but my first big mmorpg was Ultima online. I've played every thing under the sun from the almighty WoW to Maple story to eve online, eq, eq2, just to name a few (trust me this is just a few, a very little few). I have enjoyed almost every one of these I played. But what now? I'm afraid to sink $50 in a game that I will only play for a few months (and not to mention pay $15 for each of those months). I want something new, I'm sure we all do. MMORPGs seem more like MMOAGs (Massive Multi Online Action Game) to me grind this, collect this, kill him, make this. Where is the role playing? Why all the grinding? Can't a company make a game that doesn't require grinding? Or a game with a market that actually works and doesn't become flooded with crap? How about a game that you gain xp in skills you use? I want a true RPG to go MMO. I know complaining doesn't accomplish anything. I'm just tired of waiting. I want something. Something more. Something that stands out. But when will it come. My days of gaming are coming to an end. I'm married, I have a child, gaming is no longer number one on my list, but it is something I will always do. I am a gamer at heart. Unfortunately, mmorpgs just don't have anything to offer me anymore. So I guess it's to the consoles for a while. Thank you for reading my rant sorry to waste your time I just needed to vent.
I added in a poll just to see what you guys think.

I don't mind rants, they can be entertaining.
I think MMO designers have found the magical formula to keep players playing and paying.
To get someone hooked you need a good story and some RP, but:
Content in the later lvl's and storylines and RP doesn't matter when someone is hooked. Loot progression and toon progression takes over, it's far cheaper to produce and maintain than RP or story based progression.
Basically I mean this: The chance someone will keep playing because of expensive RP and content design is smaller than the chance someone will keep playing with a grind based progression out of pure progression addiction.
RP and content cost $, grind does not.
One thing you must understand this is, we players grind out contents faster than the dev can chun out new things. Especially when it comes to "end-game".... so i dont really blame the devs when they come out with more new raid contents everytime. Because the start up/ content of the game is already set..
The only solution that i can see for now will be a sand-box type mmo, but with meaningful quest accompany with it. But right i can only wait and see how's an mmo when it launches and wait for fellow players to report/review before i dive into it.
For me im waiting to see how War will be doing, giving a last chance for a level base mmo. If that fail im afraid for a foreseeable future im gona stop playing this gene.......

Aye, it does seem they are all getting to be cookie-cutter same-old, same-old thing no matter how they dress it up but then again, thats the way they were designed in the first place. Maybe WH will do it but maybe too just the novelty of a new game will wear off far too soon yet again.
Honestly, due to its incomparable RVR, DAOC held my interest for the longest time. Alas, this game seems to be dying also but it had a grand run. Another new improved type of RVR would surely perk my interests.
I've been tired of the same old shit for a long time now.
I really want a more complicated game, something with player run politics, a judicial system, and player run towns. Something deeper that engages players in to the world instead of the grind, and their are certainly many ways to do that. When developers set up a world where players are engaged with other players instead of dungeons, they don't need to churn out new raid content like Blizzard does with WoW.
Less carebear, less linear, no rails, more depth. Please make it so (and not a shitty half assed attempt).
I would love to see a more dynamic world where people are forced to cooperate and compete. A non-casual game, so to speak. A game where you can conquer lands and gain control of resources, if you cooperate well enough.
Raids are OK, except they should exist at all levels, not only at maxlevel.
And level should be something too.
PvP, I hate meaningless PvP. Haha I have better items and higher level and better class than you, YOU DIE ! Or even worse, players ganking other players after they killed a mob and their HP and Mana is down. PvP should be sportive, not about being the bigger asshole or the "fun" to destoy other peoples fun.
Believe me, I know how you feel. My first MMO was UO, but my first real RP experience in an MMO was actually in EQ. I guess I've gotten so used to the way MMO's do things today, I've forgotten the thrill of just exploring and finding quests and quest givers BY CHANCE and not because I saw a "!" or a "?" or whatever symbol, on top of someone. No, I'm not hating on WoW because I still enjoy the game A LOT. But I'm not so deluded that I can't see that there is definetely something missing from MMO's today, either that, or I've just simply grown too old heh.
Where's the none of the above option? I guess the closest would be freedom. I want a game where I can do whatever I want, whenever I want. Also, variety. I liked EQ2 for the language quests, all the items that dropped that gave quests, acheivements, collections and just so many other things I could choose to do when I log on. It's just nice to be able to do something different in every sitting if I want.
As bad as they may be, roleplaying can really only come from the MMOs. Your not going to find them on the console games. HOwever, I find that the game doesnt make roleplayers. Roleplayers are nomadic, moving from place to place, game to game for who knows what reason. I say look hard, find a clan and stick with em.
Torrential: DAOC (Pendragon)
Awned: World of Warcraft (Lothar)
Torren: Warhammer Online (Praag)
I want to own, create, build, defend MY land......
Own, Mine, Defend, Attack, 24/7
all of them

Talking about SWG much?
I voted Freedom because with freedom you can have the exact amount of everything you ever wanted. You have the ability to make the game your own and perhaps even find people that share your sentiments.
No required quests! And if I decide I want to be an assassin-cartographer-dancer-pastry chef who lives only to stalk and kill interior decorators, then that's who I want to be, even if it takes me four years to max all the skills and everyone else thinks I'm freaking nuts. -Madimorga-
Have any of you played Face of Mankind? I played this mmo a while ago. The concept of it was great but there was just too many things I disliked about it. If anyone has played it recently do you know if it has gotten better? I guess I will either go back to an mmo I already own or just wait for something worth while.
What game do you guys think I should return to? It's been several months (more like 1+ years) since I've played some of these.
A more important question would be; When did roleplaying diminish?
When MMO became mainstream and developers found out that implementing a grind instead of content is faster / cheaper and works just as well to keep players playing.
for me it was close between a proper economy and freedom.
i went with the economy because i do love to craft (and make lots of shiny coins) and i can deal with a linear game as long as the economy is good (read: prices set by people with half a brain and no twink markets).
MMO wish list:
-Changeable worlds
-Solid non level based game
-Sharks with lasers attached to their heads
Well with a few hours of research I've gotten my desision down to two games to back and give another shot. But I can not decide which one Please choose for me. EQ2 or Vanguard?
