The 1st thing I noticed when playing the Ryzom trial was the fact it made me feel like I really was on another planet in some strange Universe it was truly amazing. The AI in the game was the best I have ever seen in any mmo ever made. I really do hope they get it going soon I am sick of the current games and ready to dive into ryzom full throttle. This game deserves way better exposure than it got. I cannot wait and if the current owners of Ryzom are reading these posts People are now growing sick of wow and some of the other mmos. Market this game right and you will reap huge rewards and thanks for bringing this game back:P
It´d be just great to have the game back, but also to have finally some of the things they promised back when it launched.
I´m reluctant to use the word "contend" here, because everyone thinks differently of what exactly this "contend" is anyway
Regardless the old battle between player and developer will return. And the old saying will once more be proven true: "You just can´t please everyone."
And while some few will accept changes and new additions and will try to incorporate them into their gameplay or outright ignore them but will continue playing, others will cry treason and random unfairness on the devs side for not bringin in theri pet idea of what would fill the term "contend" to their liking.
It will be business as usual, so I´ll be happy
As long as it does not turn into another WoW clone because "the majority" demands it, I´m contend.
It´s got to retain its uniqueness and its different approach to MMO-Gaming. If not, well it might be more "successful" but it will be living proof of the fact that millions of flys can´t be wrong and we should all be eating more offal.
A nieche for the more serious players is needed. And by serious I don´t mean "seriously equiped" or "seroiusly Pwning", I mean those that otherwise "care" about a game, as opposed to raiding untill they drop of starvation. Those that see it for what it is, a game, a hobby, a way to relax and just to play.
Not a second job with obligations that interfere with real life and for people who are mature in the true sense of the word. Not looking for boobs, or blood, or for boosting a damaged ego. But for roads to get to know likeminded folks, creative minds that will share their experience, rather than laughing at you for being new to the games world. Only having scorn for those who treat others badly and not for those who try to make friends and might ask for help.
We´ll see what will come of it all.
Just pray that it will return soon (tm)

Ryzom, we dare to be different. Do you dare to adapt?
"Hurray, finally a game where I can fulfill my lifelong dream of taking emotionally dead women and finding the most financially viable means to exploit their bodies with the ultimate goal of making them Hugh Hefner's personal furniture."
Man, I have some history with Sage of Ryzom. SoR was the first MMORPG that I EVER (emphasis on ever) played that allowed customization other than face, hair. The ability to change your chest size, facial markings, nose height, it all amazed me.
Back then, I was still new to MMORPG's and this was impressive to me. Even today, after all the games i've played I can easily say that this game was one of the best and original.
Harvesting was amazing. The way you chose your abilities before character creation made each individual stand out for what they took extra "choices" in via: creating their character.
The environment was one of a kind. I have also yet to see other character models from other MMO's that look as the ones from SoR did.
I hope that this game comes back as much as any other true SoR fan does. It stood out from the rest of the games these days. While it would need a LOT of updates to catch up with the current MMO market, I'm sure the right developers could do it. At this point I think it's just hoping for smart Dev's.
Well I for one cannot wait even though since Ryzom departed from us all I've lost all my game files, I just hope something of my character remains but, starting over again may be lots of fun as well. Guess at this point all we can do is wait and hope.
Great news. Played the free trial once but wasn't making much money at the time and was playing WoW. If it comes back up and isn't a total mess, I'll probably sub.
When I played the game, I only played the trial, and I couldnt stand the starting area, it was so average and half baked feeling.
From what I have heard the rest of the game is huge, which makes me wonder why they even have a starter area at all, they should just let you get right into the world.
You can actually leave the island right away. The island is there as a tutorial for new players. The action stanza system in Ryzom is a bit complex at first. Once you get a handle on it its not that difficult. Its also a good idea to get at least to say level 40 in melee before you leave for the mainland. Melee fight points add more to your consitution than say magic, crafting or harvesting.
Agreed, definitly hope its not SOE. Very unlikely though, from what I've noticed SOE picks up successful games and ruins em. EQ1 was a great game before SOE got involved. Actually a good deal of sandbox play, although class based rather than skill based game.
Personally my number 1 pick would be Stardock, good programmers that love gaming themselves and read and post on the forums themselves ( go Frogboy ). Also the company has business apps too to provide steady income. Unlikely though --doubt they would be so mysterious if they were involved.
Well I don't care wat SOE has done in the past, what it has done with Vanguard is what they are doing now so maybe they've turned around and trying to make games better not worse.

The starter area does have problems - not the least of which is the quest-log bugs. And there's a whole other thread almost entirely devoted to how the trial area doesn't show off Ryzom's best bits.
But to answer your question of why they have the starter area at all...
Ryzom is a non-standard mmo. Anyone who's ever played one mmo could buy a new mmo, and without opening the manual or reading anything else, log in, create a character and get right into the action without losing a beat.
Ryzom is very different. It needs a tutorial area to introduce players to:
the skill system
how its version of multiclassing works
how its system of finding resources works, then how to expose the resources and then harvest them
how its Morrowind-like stanza system works, allowing players to customise their spells/abilities
Ryzom's current starter area does this nicely. It also funnels all new players into a single starter area - which helps. Previously each race went to their own area and some of those areas were deserted. Before the servers went down, it was still the case that some of the race areas on the mainland were pretty deserted. Since players have to make gear and most of them sell gear in two of the four zones, that's a 50% chance that new players would start in an empty zone with no gear to buy.
Wonderful news! I managed to play on Silan during its last weeks before the servers went down and found the game quite challenging. I enjoyed the game immensly. I even managed to get a key. I hope it still works because I'd love to see the mainland.

I'll only go back if it is the original Ryzom sans the dumbass PvP.

That's why Ryzom has a starter area.
