Place your bets - will Darkfall release inside of 2008?

Friction2uFriction2u Member Posts: 293

From Tasos - "during a planning meeting we determined that our launch date will be inside 2008, with the public beta preceding it by a few weeks. This is official and internally we're a lot more specific," [link]

Do you think Darkfall will get a 2008 launch date, or do you think it will not happen?

As much as I want to see this game released and successful  it will  need a good amount of beta testing before polished. "private testers" or not. I foresee about 5 months at least of a beta with outside testers.

I think Warhammer was claiming to be able to make it out by summer of 2007.  Planning is a good thing but hardly do they ever meet their predestine dates.

I really don't mind if it comes out in 2009. I am just dieing for an mmo where skill and location play an vital roll in the outcome.

    They have 6 months to

    1. Announce Beta

    2. Go through with Beta

    3. Announce the release date

    4. Find a publisher(doesn't appear to have happened yet, no press release)

    5. Go gold

    6. Release the actual game

It's not happening this year, it's not happening next year, they are full of shit. >6 months from launch and no publisher? Are you kidding me?

i voted "don't know" . but if i actually had to place a real bet on yes or no it would be on no.

    Nope.

But as fun as yet another poll is, I say we make it interesting. Get all the fanbois in this thread and get them all to agree that if DF doesn't at least release ( for good or ill ) by 11:59pm December 31st 2008, that the game section can be removed from here without any fuss or crying.

So my poll is, do the fanbois have the cajones to admit it's a bust when Aventurine once again delivers nothing, instead of crying "It'll be released in 2009 for sure, now!!" and allowing the charade to continue.

Will it?  Yep, I believe it will.  Not worried about that.  The worry is the condition it might be released in.

    In War - Victory.
    In Peace - Vigilance.
    In Death - Sacrifice.

Why? What would the point in that be? I can name a number of recent big-named games that slipped their originally announced release window.

And what are you offering in return when and if you are proved wrong and Darkfall releases inside of 2008? Your left testicle perhaps?

yeah they missed it 2 or 3 times.... unlike DF who has missed it ..... well i actually lost count. But im guessing its safe to assume they promised to release it once every year since 2004, so 4 times and 4 years.

i would take that bet, considering its not gonna happen. they havent released any videos, to show where they are with the development. All they have are the lies from developers.

Not true. Since Aventurine took over Razorwax (what ... five years ago now?) they have made no promises of releasing Darkfall on any particular date, or in any particular year. The quote in the opening post is the first time Aventurine have mentioned any kind of release date.

How many videos do they have to release! Jesus. Go search YouTube and educate yourself somewhat.

they took over 6 years ago (2002) and i will admit i was going off a rumor that it was announced to be released in 2004. Even still i dont see it being released. No solo beta applications means insufficient testers and not everything will be fleshed out.  6 months is too short of a time span to properly test a game.

ehh i was unsure of this sentence when i replied.

But i did find out that they announced back in september 2007 that they would start taking in solo beta applications. Which tells me that they must have a very small amount of beta testers, considering they cant even look at applicatons yet. And even if they were to finally implement it, it would only give people less then 6 months to beta test it.

sry i should make myself more clearer. They dont have videos showing the key features of the game. Ive seen the videos and they show VERY little combat. All the videos there are, are fanmade ones trying to hype the game up, and people riding around on mounts. Where are the city building videos? Naval combat? Crafting? There is nothing but a "oo ahh look at the scenery" videos.

and the latest BS about the 30-60 fps with a battle of hundreds of people, makes me trust the developers even less. On an average machine with the graphics this game has is complete BS. And im surprised anybody believed him.

EDIT: i repeated myself in the first 2 paragraphs, just ignore it.

You need to broaden your gaming horizons somewhat. There are a lot of games that can display a battle with a couple of hundred peeps with good frame-rates. Operation Flashpoint and Mount & Blade (with a battle sizer mod) come to mid. WW2Online even. Of course most mmorpg's can't do that because everyone wants to sculpt their character's faces etc 'just so' with oodles of slider bars. Having one head model rendered 200 times on screen takes less computing power than 200 different head models rendered all at once on the screen.

We already know from past dev updates that those levels of character customisation have been sacrificed for better performance. Performance is everything to them. I suspect that creating your character's face in Darkfall will be little more than choosing a face texture that gets slapped on a standard head model.

Your're right. However since I could see people actually playing them at E3 and other public places including major gamesites/magazines, I at least knew those games existed, and that there would be something eventually released.

Plus, maybe if they do have something starting to be removed from sites and losing free advertising, along with the vaporware bashing they've already started getting from major sites, will wake their asses up and get them to show something more than screenshots that look like renders and videos which show nothing of any substance that could've been made with Blender on a bored Sunday afternoon.

Fine, we'll soften it to the multitude of times this thing was going to be in beta and was "feature complete" and just in need of a publisher.

Oh, I offer a very big prize. If noone can tell, I tend to have a very big ego. So if this game were to actually launch in any kind of functional and playable state with even half of everything they've promised, I would be taking a major blow from having to admit how wrong I was. Hell, I may have to leave the forums forever as the shame of it all would be too great.

    So we'll do this:

No Darkfall in 2008, kick it and Aventurine to the curb.

Darkfall releases in 2008, I'll leave and even retire my moniker which I use in more places than just this one, after apologizing profusely to the fanbois for my lack of faith.

    Fair enough?

Those graphics are pretty damned good Friction.  They're not great, but having the ability to get 150FPS everywhere and 30-60FPS with 200v200 battles on an average PC in a seamless world is rediculous.

It had never been done before in any MMOs before.  You can see games struggling to even get 100v100 battles, let alone 200v200 on average computers!

Not only that, but if you take DarkFall's AI, graphics, and seamless world into effect, it just makes it more and more unlikely that they actually have the ability to do this.  Until they actually prove all of these big statements, I refuse to believe anythign that Tasos says.

lol your comparing Mount&Blade and WW2Online graphics to DF ... thats cute .... And on a average machine if you made a 200vs200 battle in M&B YOU WOULD NOT GET 30-60 FPS. You would need a pretty good machine to do that. This game i can already tell will fail, just due to the fact they havent properly tested it, and if they do release this year. I sense a Vangaurd epic fail release.

The only actual MMOG that Friction mentioned was WWIIOL.  And it sure as hell does not handle large battles well.   I played it at launch and for a few years after.  I have given it a try a few times since, though not very recently.  The WWIIOL client back then limited the number of chars displayed to 64 maximum.  Any additional characters were just not displayed by your client. (Here is the kicker - some of those players that are invisible to you, may be able to see and kill you.)  Now, I know they were talking about increasing that to 128, but I very much doubt it is beyond that number.  Even so, lag was bad, especially as infantry trying to engage infantry.

Here is the WWIIOL wiki entry regarding the visibility limit - though they dont give hard numbers for each setting:

I also played WW2 online from launch for 5 years, and what theogrim says is true, anyone who has actually played WW2 online knows that this statement from Tasos is extremely dubious.

"We’ve been simulating massive battles and sieges with more than two hundred characters and getting a good 30-60 fps on average machines so far. Under normal loads we typically get over 150 fps and there are still several optimizations to be made so we expect these figures to improve quite a bit."

This seems much more likely in my opinion.

"We’ve been testing massive battles and sieges with more than two hundred players and getting a good 3-6 fps on average machines so far. Under normal loads we typically get over 15 fps and there are still several optimizations to be made so we expect these figures to improve quite a bit."

Then MMORPG.com's new staff reared their ugly head and locked the most famous MMO thread in the site's history... a multi-year thread about 1 singular game with Developers from 4 different controlling companies and history of links and information.

its BS that they locked it, it wasnt being derailed or trolled, there was no flame wars except the massive one against colton and Mourning. But w.e i cant remember the last time i ever agreed with the forum mods here.

I had to vote "yes" on a 2008 release. Nothing personal or anything, i just want to play a MMO as DF as soon as possibly.

Right now i have nothing to play (MMOs) and i feel i deserve something.
