General: Perfect World - Introductory Q&A

StraddenStradden Managing EditorMember CommonPosts: 6,696

While we aren't quite ready to add them to our Game List, the folks at Perfect World International (the company bringing Perfect World to the North American market)have answered a number of our introductory questions about their game, Perfect World.

Where was this game first officially launched and can you tell us a little bit about the game’s popularity there?

Perfect World International

Perfect World was first introduced in China in late 2006. Initially introduced into the market as a subscription-based game, Perfect World Inc. decided to convert the game into a Free to Play model in order to reach a broader audience. While already well received, Perfect World’s popularity in China surged after the game’s conversion. Perfect World has been the recipient of over forty awards in China, including “Most Popular Online Game” and “Most Popular MMORPG”.

Read the whole interview here.

Yeah, well....they don't want North Americans to play very badly, that's for sure.  Just to register an account you have to provide them with a passport number.  WTF?  First of all, I'm 45 years old and don't have a freakin' passport.....what 20 year old or less is going to unless they are military or have a rich mommy and daddy??  Not everyone in the US has a passport, as a matter of fact, your average income person does NOT.  What a crock of crap.

Apart from this being ridiculous, I personally find giving that sort of detailed information out on a website, to be UNWISE even if you DO have the info TO give.  Who in their right mind is going to type in their most personal identification information over a connection that isn't even SSL?  They ask for your birthday, address, and passport?  Uhm....no.  It said something also, that made me think they might ask for a social security number in lieu of a passport number.  Well there is NO WAY IN HELL I'm putting my name, birthdate, address, phone number and SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER over a non-secured webform.  HOW STUPID.

Everything above and also to add the fact that it's a Chinese company. *China = Communist*

I dont want them getting my information.

Just put down random numbers for the passport thing thats what I did.

But that whole interview is a bunch of bullshit and they lie like 8 times in it. I played the game for about 6 months and I never once saw a GM or ever heard of someone talking to one. Also THERE WAS 1 PATCH IN 6 MONTHS!!!! I think thats horrible. Also after level 30 you can not completely level off quests and eventrally the game becomes a complete grind just like every other asian mmo

I agree with the above comments.  It's not geared toward NA players, and they have been "developing" this version for a long time.  This is just another bad attempt at a communist Chinese company to take advantage of North American economy.  It's just poorly-made, sub-par garbage not worth wasting a moment on.

Uh, I'm pretty sure this interview is referring to the North American import of Perfect World that has not been released yet. So the poor service and having to enter a passport are not really related. Unless it's the same thing...

We'll see if they actually do a good localization, not counting on it but if they do it will be the first. Gamespot has it down as Q3 2008, but I don't know how accurate that is. Other than this interview I can't find much info about the localization effrot.

I could be clueless of course :)

I just added everything fake (as I do with every free mmo) and it worked.  Put in a fake passport number and everything.

The games got some good qualities and many bad ones.  The bad is the item mall, item malss shold not take from the basics of the game, i should not have to pay to have a full inventory. There should not be items that effect the overall ability to compete in pvp, ( uber weapons armor super potions super speed etc.

Item malls should only allow for special looks faster lvling or gold. or resources to speed up crafting. If you effect the playing field then youve ruined the game for NA sorry but NA like to compete on fair grounds or we will just bomb you. No but really free tibet, ohh my  i ment your game would fail here.

Any item sold in the Item Mall can be vended out - or exchanged, and many can be resold in Auction House.

No way in the world would I give them my passport number, but I did open an account using my birth date instead of the passport number.

Did you register to perfect-world.com.my? That's the south east asian version, not the north american version, which has yet to launch a website I think.

With that said, Perfect World is one of the best mmorpg's to come out of Asia, it has plenty of aspects that appeal to western gamers. I have seen plenty of people who usually hate the traditional korean style of play love this game. it's well worth a try.

There is no NA version of PW.  There is the english international version.  It is out of maylasia (sp?), and the website is www.perfectworld.com.my

Saying that is the NA version is kinda wrong, since half the players are non-english speaking.

It is an ok game in general, but nothing special.

That is not the version they are refering to in the interview. That is the malaysian version, it never was the international version. The real international version is yet to come out and will be hosted and maintained from NA.

Ah hah! lol  so we might not have 1k ping every other day?

Would be nice if I had not already got bored of the grinding past lvl 65 (you get basically 10% of your lvl from quests past 65, and the rest is grind grind grind)

Some of you talk as if grinding is a bad thing!  It makes MMOs last longer than 1 week!  I like to take my time getting to the cap and not be there as fast as possible just to raid, PvP or nothing!  Grindng you're always outdoing something, killing tons of mobs and still gaining XP.

Any yeah the passport thing is you read is just an identification number...just make up a number!  Doesn't have to be your real one if you have one or anything else important...hehe

There is so much mininformation from you posters, i don't know where to start.  Anyway, i played the Malaysian English patch version sometime around last year, and it wasn't that bad.  It's probably one of the better F2P ones out there.

  • ArawonArawon Member Posts: 1,108

When asked about localized version...the question was flat out ignored. Because they dont have a North American /European server and localized game. It's badly needed.

Actually this is an invalid conclusion. I have three guilds (two GM's in place) and virtually 75% of them are from the US.

How about actually taking time to play the Maylasia/English version, before you jump to conclusions.

The game has a good community, plenty of help, but I do admit it takes a little to get use to inputting coordinates and using the map properly.

Good game - held my attention MUCH longer than: WOW, Final Fantasy, 2Moons, 9 Dragons, (name any online game here).

    Deb

OMG, Deb, don't tell me that you actually GAVE that company all the information they ask for on their registration page?  O.O

Well...good luck not getting your identity stolen or something.  No game is worth that risk.  They fix that....or I'll be one of many many that never "actually take time to play the Malaysian/English version before jumping to conclusions."  Pfffft.

It doesn't take a very large "jump" to figure out that just registering isn't very bright.

Whoever suggested lying about all of your information though....might have the solution, albeit not exactly honest, but....I have no intentions of being "honest" with Malaysia.  No thanks.  No legal recourse if they screw us over either, being it's not localized.

Anyway....I'm done ranting now guys!  =D  LOL

this game smokes every other f2p game out there for 1. the .my version WAS infact international ie. english.

this games servers have already been hacked is 1 thing to note, you can play PW on private servers.

you people make it sound like it is sooooo hard to fake a number... my god what kind of fools are you? your precious pass port number oh no!! what they gonna jack all your frequent flier miles if you do actually use the real number? IDIOCY. im going to die shitting myself laughing the day someone hacks into blizzards database and gets all those credit card numbers. FFS get a grip.

this game also seems to defeat the whole gold spammer thing by basically selling the gold themselves (its a bit more complex than that but in essence it is true).

a lot of people were playing this while (apparently) most of you were wanking off over what a great and epic game AoC was going to be. the 1 thing that seemed really really cool was the ability to skin your own face onto your characters, other than that (and the flying combat which people seem to cream over when they see it in aion) it is a DECENT rpg. why this site hasnt added it to their "official list" is beyond me considering all the pieces of total garbage that are on it.

  • tetchytetchy Member Posts: 30

This is talking about a (future) NA hosted version not the (current) PW-MY (Eng) that Cubizone hosts in Malaysia

i see ppl complain about the (cubizone) registration of PW-MY - but you dont need to give passport number (i entered "not applicable" for that field) and you can make up a phone number for the feild that wants mobile number (it even tells you number of digits needed and what prefix's they require)

i expect the NA-version not to need any of this to register

however - it is unlikely i'll play unless certain fixes are made to the code (for example the forest-ruins race [and subsequent eye-of-forest rewards] which is still offline and broken in the original chinese version let alone the english language version), and changes made (or the chinese owners allow code-changes) to improve the territory war (TW) rules.

in addition, since there are plenty of servers for chinese-speaking community, i would hope for an IP ban for Asia, - not for racist reasons (many of the freinds i had before quitting PW-MY were Asian), but because the same situation will occur with goldfarmers / bots and account-sharing that will enable the experienced groups of players to control the territories (and wealth) on any new server - just like they have done on the PW-MY (Eng) servers

  • megaflux19megaflux19 Member Posts: 99

yea i saw a LOOOOOOOOOOOT  of botting going on, and also if it is an english client there is no f'ing reason to even let people use asian characters in their names (plus it makes it a total PITA to report them for botting or anything else). its just a decent game, better than any f2p game out there (which makes this site look like clowns NOT having it on their list) and not quite as good (some would say) as p2p games.

i couldnt play it again either unless they fixed all the code, kill all non-north  american ip's (screw brasil!) and make any language besides english a bannable offense (so yea i doubt i would ever play this again).

Spoken like a true teenager with no income, who doesn't OWN the credit cards, frequent flyer miles, or passports.  Feel free to call anyone who is cautious an idiot, but I would like to put forth the distinct possibility that YOU are too trusting.  You're giving information to a company outside of the United States and the U.S. legal accountability, therefore, it's actually WISE to think twice about it.  It's hard ENOUGH to get legal recourse WITHIN the U.S. for internet financial screw ups with U.S. BASED games and companies.

That being said....I did just register and make up all the information (even though the EULA admonishes one not to DO so and says they will....omg noessss..."BAN" anyone they find out that does).  Wow....I'm so scared of being banned from a game.  O.o

Anyway.....I'm humoring everyone who raves on the game.  You've got me curious.  I'll try it.

And since I KNOW you're going to post and say, "What?  I'm not a teenager...blah blah blah."  I will also respond in kind to YOUR assumption (we all assume things, don't we) and let you know that not "ALL" of us have been "wanking off over what a great and epic game AoC was going to be."  Personally, I doubt the advertising on every single game that is released.  Advertising is made to create hype, and hype is notoriously not worthy of paying any heed.

The fact that I haven't heard that much about this game, actually makes me more curious about it than all the others that get so much press.

Oh, and I'm a 45 year old mother of 3 grown children, and yes....I'm absolutely ANAL about devulging my financial information.  Sue me.  However, I won't likely be the one getting any of MY accounts hacked, now, will I?

Grinding is a bad thing.  If the only thing a game dev can do is make you kill several million monsters to level up, instead of doing varying quests and such, then they are lazy and the game will be boring.

Mob grinding as the only way to level up is just BS.  Thats just me.  Killing the same type mobs for  hundereds of  hours is not fun.  Games are supposed to be fun.  If you want to feel accomplished for wasting hundereds of hours of your life killing pixels over and over and over, then by all means go for it.  That is not my idea of a good time.
