AoC Hate Factor

VultureSkullVultureSkull Member UncommonPosts: 1,774

Why is that people have such venom against AOC?

1. They see the potential of AoC but are frustrated by the present condition of the game.

2.  They fell for the hype, are slightly naive and expected an 100% polished game on release?

3. They see it as a threat to their pet favourite game.

4. This is one of the first major releases this year and there were a lot of people expecting a lot of things from AoC, a lot of them came from WoW and expected similar levels of polish and content and were disappointed when it was not there.

I truly believe that the mature MMO player who has been involved in many games and knows the market, is or does not get frustrated so easily.

I have not really seen this much hate towards other games, only towards SOE.

This is what happens when a game is hyped a bit too much.

I don't hate much in life, let alone a game, but I do reserve the right to be critical. Call this 'venom' if you want, but the game had to do something wrong to bring me from being a believer to a cynic.

I don't feel tricked or misrepresented by AoC's hype, I accept any game has to promote itself in today's market, but I will be open and sincere when I say this game to me is...

    Boring.

I personally have played it and have found it, on the negative, to be sterile, linear, and with waaay too little content in terms of dungeons and the like. I also prefer group based games, and AoC is 90% a soloers heaven.

This isnt venom, it's just my view. Please don't try to cram me into little pigeon holes that just exist to justify your own perspective.

Yeah, I think those are the main reasons why there is so much hate against AoC. Anyways I'm having a good time playing the game ( i'm a very patient person) but I have to admit that I do also sometimes get a little frustrated by the condition of the game right now and many things are not working, so I don't blame ppl getting angry and misspleased  because its far away from what potential the game realy has, But if ppl wait 2-3 moths I think it will be a excelent game to play = )

Well Boring is a valid point, and this and many other games would be boring for you.

So not just AoC you find boring i guess.

Since you dont have venom towards the game then this post is not about you and i am not pigeon holing you into anything.

You're right man, the game in a nutshell is extremely boring.. Even the few groups I did get into.. The game just didn't have the same dynamics as eq2 when in a group.. I blame the melee combat system and player collision.. Thats the 2 biggest reasons why grouping in aoc sucked.. You had no mobility as a tank in a group.. You were trying to dps to generate enough hate to hold agro but if the mobs started bouncing around to various dps classes you had to interrupt your combo to move and go get it.. The combat system was not tank friendly at all.. Maybe guards have an easier time tanking and holding agro but my conq had some issues.. I didn't even really feel like a tank in my gay quilt..

Some other issues.. No in combat rezs, or conqs had it but no control over it.. How freaking stupid is that? No hate mods/buffs for tanks, no deagro for dps.. I tried the conq and kept hearing it gets better through my 20's and 30's/40's.. They just flat out suck in that type of combat system.. Which is by far the slowest and dumbed down combat system I've ever played.. and this is just a few of many issues with that game.. I haven't even touched upon how stupid the graphics look.. World design and layout are ok the set paths suck.. Ambient lighting was terrible, particle effects are terrible.. Armor/weapons models are the worst I've seen in any game.. The graphics really weren't that great I don't know what people like about them.. I found them extremely ugly.. Imo, tanks wear plate and use shields.. Their whole system is garbage from top to bottom..

Oh and # 5: People are tired of being used and abused by these companies that deliver half done and shoddy games based on lies and deceitful PR which is protected by NDA up till release.

I think a lot of people are frustrated with mmo's in general.  There have been so many crappy games released in a row now, each one promising to be better and more revolutionary than the last one, and each one has just been worse and worse.

There have been a couple decent games released in the last 2-3 years, but after a few big name titles were cancelled because they couldn't get there crap together, and then the horrible releases of Vanguard and Age of Conan which were both supposed to be the next best thing since sliced bread, people are just tired of overhyped, craptastic games that run poorly and can't deliver on even half of their promised content and gameplay mechanics.

It isn't just the blogging, and forum communities either.  How many awards, like from E3 and several gaming mags, did AoC get to help drive interest in it, just to have it turn out the way it did, practically unplayable on required spec (and some recommended spec) computers, with boring content and game mechanics.  Now i supposed the fun factor of a game is somewhat of a personal opinion, but the way this "new" generation of mmo's is turning out performance wise even is really discouraging.  It's the companies that realize that gameplay, community, and customer service are the most important part of a game, that are going to be successful.

Not all who wander are lost...

I personaly felt it was over hyped, didn't find it as addictive as the games I've played before, found it way better than F2P games tho and there's nothing around to keep me entertained, I kept playing but I couldn't force myself any more and stopped playing after 3 weeks. The bugs or polish levels were not a problem for me (little stabs only).

I don't think it's so much hate, it's more that nobody likes to be made a fool of... you know?

Like back in the day your mom swore she was going to get you the top of the range racing bicycle for your birthday and you've been creaming your pants about it for weeks and telling your buddies n shit... Your birthday rolls around and it's a frickin' 25 dollar Taiwanese  'Happy Go Fun Byke' brand pseudo mountain bike with 3 gears, a solid iron frame and solid rubber tires.

This happened to me. I chopped up my mom and put her in the freezer for that. Want to come over for a BBQ?

How about just that the game is a disappointment on virtually all fronts...

performance, stability, content, execution and consistency are all seriously lacking.

So personally  I'm extremely disappointed in the game.  The 1-20 experience is a rip off that in no way reflects the real game.  funcom knew this from the start which is why the limited all these exposure of the game to lvl 1-20.

So in addition to the issues above funcom is deceptive, spins a ton of hype that they don't deliver on, and even worse they do it intentionally and dishonestly.

I posted awhile back a list of things funcom promised for June.  I think we have one patch in the month of June left and so far they have delivered NOTHING they have promissed.

Now some people may find all this acceptable but I find it deplorable.  You say all MMORPGs are like this.  I'd say I don't care, and funcom extends this in the wrong direction.  I want to see games that at least are completed and deliver what they claim.  As a paying consumer every one of us should demand this.  Else we just encourage companys to continue to push the envelope of exceptability down.  This is NOT a trend I want to endorse and tell people is acceptable.  That will be me telling game companies of the world that it's ok to deliver incomplete, deceptively hype, broken games that I wouldn't even call ready for beta.

Well in general people have grown to be more and more rude on the internet where they can hide behind some avatar or fake name.  Couple that with any of the following:

    1) Having false ideas of the game because the developer lied to you.

    2) Being a drama queen.

    3) Being a troll.

    4) Something happened in game that pissed you off. (Maybe unrelated to the developers like say a player)

    5) Having decided that the game was bad before it launched and expressing your ideas on the forum, and then having a 'Told you so, eat it #%@#$' mentality.

    6) Being a fanboy of a different game.

    7) Needing to stroke the e-peen.

    8) Fence jumper, and jumping on the same side of the fence as the majority of the forum goers.

    9) Being subjective to horde/zombie mentality.

... and you have what these forums are today.  This kind of stuff goes on with EVERY game launch, but AoC has a much larger number of players who fit inside these categories so it is a lot more apparent.

However, no game ever will be void of this kind of behavior unless people start pretending like they are saying what they type on a stage in front of all of the people that mill around on these forums.

  • ethionethion Member UncommonPosts: 2,888

To add to the list above.

Probably just overreacting to the blithering idiocy that you see from some fanbois that fail to see the flaws in the game that are so obvious and apparent....

5 - It epitomizes the wrong and backward MMO game design philosophy which is stopping the genre from becoming what it could be.

As if WoW's success didn't take 5 years of MMO evolution already.. now we have another step backward into the linear single-player-RPG-with-MMO-capability land.

When EQ came out I thought "oh noes, how can anyone build a MMORPG on a single-player game concept". If I knew then that the legacy of that would be still the dominant one in MMORPGs 10 years later I would have found myself another hobby.

Lets say you buy a sports car, the fastest, with the biggest engine.

And it doesn't pass 60 miles per hour, but they will fix it soon, and the right door dont close, but you have a sit belt, so whats the panic ? Oh, it breaks every 20 miles, but just w8 for the mechanics for half an hour - no big deal. And anyways, most people just drive to the store and back, so they will not notice it.

Another thing, every time you buy fuel, you pay additional 50 cent a galon to the car meker, for all the things he still needs to fix in the car.

But I guess, veteran american car owners, are used to it.

    Guess what happens next ? TOYOTA ! MAZDA ! NISSAN ! .......

This has also puzzled me... not much hate for anything else but what SOE does and agaisnt AoC.. but I recon we have lots of people craving for attention so they need to write some angry stuff to start giving out punches so they can annoy those who actually bothers to read their crap.

I still think SOE has several good games and AoC is decent game.. haven't played a mmo I'm 100% satsified with yet... and I doubt it will ever come.. :P I'm too picky.

  • Reborn17Reborn17 Member Posts: 414

The hate is inversely proportional to the hype especially for almost $100 a pop. The ultra high expectations the marketing mavens at Funcom created pre-release turn to  venomous hatred when you realize you have been lied to.

"The people never give up their liberties but under some delusion." -Edmund Burke

Who will rise up for me against the evildoers? or who will stand up for me against the workers of iniquity?"
    (Psalm 94:16)

  • Dishonesty always breeds hatred.  Even in face to face confrontations where people may be more polite or even tempered.

In fact lying directly to someones face will make them angrier than other modes of communication.  Repeated lying pisses most anyone off.

There is no doubt that a large majority (about 75% according to multiple polls) of people on these boards consider Funcom to have been dishonest when it comes to AoC.

So all in all it makes perfect sense and is in fact quite normal given that.  I personally don't give a rat's ass about AoC one way or the other but I do find that what I consider to be their blatant dishonesty makes me enjoy seeing them get some come upence.

If it weren't for the ridiculous hype and the blatant lying i would probably barely post on these boards since I had made up my mind to wait and the other stuff is stuff I don't really care about .  And by that I mean that I think everyone has the right to demand quality and that is good thing, but everyone also has the right to play whatever the heck they feel is fine and the former crowd trying to bully the latter crowd into demanded their kind of game is not something I like to participate in.

But that is not what happened with AoC they simply lied.  They claim nerfing necros was well received.  They claim they had a great and smooth launch even though that is only true of tortage.

The clearly waged a campaign of misinformation.  They made Tortage the way it is.  Had a number of talking points that would be in line with Tortage and then were the first the repeatedly claim that everything in Tortatge applied to the rest of the game.

This is typical policitcal BS.  Get in front of the story make a false but plausible claim repeatedly.  Hve the fanboys pick it up and then its magically "true".  They did this so that they could leave the rest of the game woefully and irresopnsibly unfinished.

They simply lied and planned the lies out.  Of course people hate them.

However, if by hype you mean "promised features" or features that are even listed on the game box which do not exist or are not working.  Well, then it's not our fault.  It's the developers and producers of the game.  Now-a-days I take a wait and see approach to MMORPG's.  Those early days of "got to be there at launch" are over.  I'm going to let AoC cook for 6 months before I partake.  And even then I will do a Free Trial first before I buy.
