I want to love this game-

I've always been a huge fan of MMO's, and I've always been a huge fan of Tolkien, and LOTR.  However I have tried multiple times to play this game and got to about level 10 each time.

I understand not having a huge emphasis on magic related classes, but it seems that cutting them out entirely has made it really hard for me to get other friends into the game for one thing.  Most of my friends play casters, and every time I try to get them to join me on the trial they all say the same thing.  How can the dev's say there is no magic in Middle Earth when the rings were magical, and there are many different examples of magic being used to a certain extent in the books.

Anyways, As to my problem.  It feels as if the combat is very slow, does the combat pick up later in the game? Or do some classes feel more responsive then others?  Also is there a way to turn the lore master into just a pet/CC class and into a nuker type role?

The game is beautiful, it is appealing on many levels, but I'm having a hard time finding the right class, or the right situation to propel me to higher levels and thus more of the game.  If anyone could give me some help, that'd be much appreciated.

LM don't really com into their own until very high levels.  Pre-ten they are a challenging solo class.  Very low DPS, and weak defense.  They have to rely largely on debuffs and CC to get by.  They slowly start picking up after that.  By around level 30 or 35 they have very good burst damage (they get a pet with very good burst damage at 30).  Honestly though, if you are stalling out at ten I don't think it's the right class for you.

Try a Hunter.   Not only do they kill most mobs faster than you can blink, they get a run speed buff and tracking both of which speed up the pace of the questing considerably.  If you still aren't having fun on a hunter, the game isn't for you.

See Tabula Rasa or AoC if fast paced combat is what you are looking for.

I don't want to write this, and you don't want to read it. But now it's too late for both of us.

Yes there are some magic in the books but its EXTREMLY reas and only the most powerfull beings can wield any form of magic.. sorry but if you want alot of flashy high-magic then this game will never for you..

but... the Lore master is the closest to a magic class and have som really cool "spells" like a lightning AoE strike and summoning an ent... and they have pretty good DPS at higher lvls

yes the combat is a bit slow.. this is mostly because there are no instant abilities, all they a while untill you cast them and to me it feels more tactical and roleplayish than for example WoW or AoC... maybe try a champion for some faster melee combat or a hunter for ranged..

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

I am enjoying this beautiful game and have 3 times since it's inception left and re-subscribed. Everything about the game is wonderfully done except the MOST important thing.

The classes are simply just, well... "meh".

I have a difficult time picking a class to play an alt character. Basically, I don't find the classes that interesting to play. They're not bad, just nothing stands out to make them unique.

Anyway, I'm playing LOTRO again and having fun but the classes still bother me the most about this fine game.

I've been trying different classes myself.   I've found so far that my hunter is faster at combat which is nice.  My guardian takes forever to kill something.    Lore master is fun but slow too I think.

Then again, I play several different ways depending on what mood I'm in.  I understand what you mean about magic, but I think they incorporate that in the Loremaster pretty well.  I'm generally not a caster though.

There will be 2 new classes with the Mines of Moria expansion. I hope you can find something to suit you there.

That would be nice, I have been looking around but so far I haven't found a lot of solid information about the new classes.

I agree with you partly Xion1985, however for me it's not getting suited with the classes i just can't seem to fully 'get into' the game. I think the reason is it calls itself LOTRO and yet doesn't seem very Lord Of The Rings. it's a decent game but it just can't keep up with games like Guild Wars, it's not about graphics (although Guild Wars are better), it's not about gameplay (although Guild Wars is better). it isn't about anything like that, I think it's the ability the game has to immerse you in the land and stories and that is where Lord Of The Rings is somehow lacking.

    See you in Gamer-Hell.

I kinda had the same experience the first time I played in beta. The low levels, combat is just damage. Even the group quests its just do a bunch of damage. It wasnt til I finally did the retake weathertop quest and got to use non-damage skills in conjuction with other members of the group before it finally clicked with me. Thats around level 25 or so. Been playing ever since. If your only having to do damage to complete quests and not have to use any stradegy at all, then you havent gotten to the point to really appreciate your class. Its up to you if ya wanna stick it out til then, I had nothing else to play is why I stuck with it. Glad I did. Good luck with whatever you decide.

    See you in the dream..

A hint for your guardian: use overpower stance and a 2 handed weapon, with parry reactions. You'll cut through mob like a knife in butter. I levelled like crazy this way with my alt :))

The Lore Master is a damn good mage imho, I;ve got one at 30 odd and she's been a hell of a lot of fun.  Quite a difficult class to play well, but very rewarding.
