General: Runes of Magic: Starting Area Revealed

SzarkSzark News ManagerMember Posts: 4,420

Runes of Magic is a recently announced MMO project to be published by Frogster Interactive. Recently, Frogster released a design document outlining the game's starting area, which we are pleased to publish here along with a few screenshots of the described zones.

The gloomy word howling in the name of the Howling Mountains does not correspond to the mellow landscape. In earnest though there was a meeting place of lower daemons here and especially the Barrow was a venue for the wild hordes. In certain nights they performed bizarre sacrificial rituals in the Barrow’s monumental stone formation. Due to the accompanying screams the area was later called the Howling Mountains. Some years ago the Council of Varanas and the Eye of Wisdom repeatedly cleansed the region with great wraith expulsions and the force of arms.

At the time the first humans settled there, no howling could be heard, which has once reverberated through the valley. Since then travellers and adventures experience the Howling Mountains as an open ley, which can be perceived at a glance. The surrounding mountains and spiky stone formations can nonetheless instil a slightly eerie feeling of discomfort.

It looks poorily designed in my opinion but I could be wrong as I often am. What I noticed was a simplicity to the graphics engine. Which isnt necessarily bad. The models actually remind me of the models in Spore.

Well its vibrant and colorful. I'll give it that. The textures are all stretched out and nasty though and its got a hefty case of the "Bloom", aka post processing effects, going on. Imo, Bloom can be used to make atmospheres look fantasy-like...or it can be used to hide poorly made models/textures. You decide how its used.

My mom likes adventure games, so I bought a couple of Sherlock Holmes titles by these guys for her. Both were buggy and customer service never answered any of her e-mails.

    Beware.

Edit: They also made Paradise City.

But this, if im not wrong, is the only f2p mmo that offer AH, and even the whole features with quest, crafting etc... really make this the same, if not better than alot of p2p mmo out there.

    RIP Orc Choppa

I'm gonna have to check on that. I believe I did see them linked somehow.

Edit: That was easy, Frogster is the Korean publisher for Spellborn. news.mmosite.com/content/2007-10-28/20071028225057740,1.shtml

well they can publish all they want, it doesn't make a bit of difference as far as the programming goes. you have to figure out who the group was that programmed said games to figure out the ones to lookout for.

the ones programming TCoS is Spellborn NV.  Publishers just ship the said game to various locations and or make it available to a given audience nothing more.  But they can influence schedules and make the programming company end up shipping a not so polished product to market.  But at least as far as MMOs go, it's always an ongoing development.  A good rule of thumb with any MMO is to wait 4 to 6 months after release before trying it.  But sometimes bugs are fun :)

I know who is developing Spellborn, I'm in the beta ( and no, that's not an NDA breach as we are allowed to say we're in beta, just nothing beyond that ). But publishers tend to handle customer support, also. So these Frogster guys not answering customer e-mails concerning when there is a problem, such as bugs, does become a concern.

Those images are a perfect cross between WoW and LotRO graphics. I only mention this because it's so strikingly similar. The cartoony trees, logs, spiders... the realistic structures, people, armor... Kinda weird for someone who plays both games.

I'm not much into fantasy, but this one looks interesting. At least it's free. The backstory is interesting and I like the crafting aspects. But I'll reserve judgment until they release more information.

Reminds me of runescape but with better graphics.  If it is like runescape i hope they fix the magic issues... Still Runes of Magic makes me afraid if it will be like runescape.

Well, could be good or could be bad.....everyone lets pray for good
