The hate is inversely proportional to the hype especially for almost $100 a pop. The ultra high expectations the marketing mavens at Funcom created pre-release turn to venomous hatred when you realize you have been lied to.
no people created an illusion by themselves of a perfect game.. I followed up on the stuff FC announced and they didn't actually lie to people. Yeah they promise to deliver a lot of things which was broken or didn't work properly.. I don't remember them saying they will release a top bug free game without any problems... people are mostly themself to blame if they really thought that this is going to be problem free or without any bugs.
You lied to yourself when people know from past releases of any games that things is not what you expect. and all games is delivered with broken stuff or bugged.
But I mean if it makes you feel better to tell yourself they lied because it wasn't up to your expectations I recon it works for you.
If people had some kinda of brain capacity no offense you should be better than just to go off buy a game expecting it to be whatever you expect of it.
But some people have hard time learning from earlier releases of games.
Do a survey 1st.. and if you haven't been admitted to beta testing of a certain game you should wait until there is a trial for the game so you can try it out.
And this goes for everyone always be critic to any games it might not be what you think or hope it to be.
Funcom have stated several times that they were after WoW's customers.
AoC is ment to be the WoW for the Xbox 360. Nothing else. And I belive they will have quite a financial success with the console version. I also belive that the PC subs will be down to about 100k-150k by then.
I think there are two major reasons why AOC has so high hate factor.
1) Closed beta did not go out of NDA before launch. Closed beta players knew the state of the game. THey knew what Funcom were putting out and how it would be. Some maybe were hoping for a Miracle patch - but most knew there was none. Most closed beta testers were just happy they were actually able to play for more than 10 mins without crashing week before launch. Funcom failed the loyal ppl - Just like LOTRO failed a chunck of the LOTR fans - when they had payed for lifetime account. Simply not good.
2) Reaction from FUncom when ppl are saying what they really feel. Why are ppl quitting ? Why are those posts deleted ? And why you think ppl react badly when they see such a respond from the company that they just payed 50 bucks to, actually beleving that the features and the content that is said to be on the box really is there ? OFC ppl get pissed. And they will not forget such things any time soon.
It sounds like all are fine with a company falsly advertising things that they then can't deliver - and when the costumers dare to point that out - then they are banned from the forums. And you think those ppl are getting answered if they are writing emails to Funcom ? Seriously ? Lets look on the general service of the game and we all can take an educated guess....
To many - Funcom is just laughing at ppl for beeing fooled into buying their game. Their lack of responds and ignorance are an insult to every single costumer.
Thats usually more than enough to light a fire that wont die so easily. And then there is not much else to do for those ppl that had planned to play AOC for next months other than bitch and complain repeatedly about how bad the game was and how they were treated by Funcom. Thats just perfectly normal if you ask me.

Come on man. People spent >$100 upgrading computer in anticipation of AoC having DX10 that is in addition to all the costs of AoC itselft. No one knew DX10 was out of the build until a day or two before release. They hyped DX10 as a major selling points for over a YEAR.
I did not buy this game. I have not spent one red cent on this game. I did not believe any of their hype. But even I was astounded to see that DX10 was not in the game.
And anyone who spent extra money to upgrade their computer for these features has every right to be upset and angry. I personally would have been more cautious.
But to sau that Funcom is in no way responsible or culpable or did nothing wrong. That is just way past the bounds of reason in my mind. Those people got screwed. Plain and simple. Yes caution would have prevented that getting screwed but that in no way excsues Funcom. Far from it; its actually more damning.
Why is that people have such venom against AOC? 1. They see the potential of AoC but are frustrated by the present condition of the game. 2. They fell for the hype, are slightly naive and expected an 100% polished game on release? 3. They see it as a threat to their pet favourite game. 4. This is one of the first major releases this year and there were a lot of people expecting a lot of things from AoC, a lot of them came from WoW and expected similar levels of polish and content and were disappointed when it was not there. I truly believe that the mature MMO player who has been involved in many games and knows the market, is or does not get frustrated so easily. I have not really seen this much hate towards other games, only towards SOE.
I can't speak for everybody as you are attempting to do, but I'll tell you why I have so much venom against AoC.
1. Partially correct, AoC did have potential, but I'm more frustrated by the fact that this is the 2nd funcom MMO that I've paid to beta test. Anarchy Online was horrible, lag was huge, couldn't even move around the city, the random dungoens were full of line of site problems, resulting in constant death, etc. I thought that Funcom would have learned from the AO mistake of releasing a game long before it was ready to be released, but they didn't, they did the exact same thing with AoC. AoC still needs months of beta testing before its even playable. I'm frustrated in myself for allowing Funcom to take advantage of my wallet.
2 & 4. I'm grouping these together since it's all about polish. WRONG. I wasn't expecting a super polished game, but I was expecting a game that didn't crash on me so much that some nights I actually spent more time relogging/rebooting than I did playing. Not everybody has the memory leak problem, but lots of us do, it's horrible. I zone into Old Tar(whatever), I crash, I zone out of OT, I crash, I talk to more than a couple quest givers, I crash. I crash for no reason at all. I blue screen while standing still. Not to mention all the background crashes, I spent nearly as much time trying fixes, rebuilding my PC with different operating systems (XP, XP64, Vista and Vista 64), as I did actually playing the game. I'm not talking polish, I'm talking playability....but AoC has neither.
Then there is the whole issue of completely whacked out class balance. Rangers that can 2 shot anybody from 20-40, then become one of the weakest classes in the game. Healers that out nuke the nuker classes, necro, one of the lowest HP classes in the game has the worst DPS. Rogues, which don't have nearly enough survivability to make up for their lackluster DPS. Tanks, yes the most defensive class in the game, running around one shotting any non-tank class, mounted combat that doesn't work, seiges which weren't possible because there was a bug with some building type, every class has a HUGE list of bugs...bugs discovered and documented by PLAYERS not staff. Then there is a complete lack of content between 50 & 80, forcing people to grind levels because there isn't anything else to do. My god man, you think this is a lack of polish? This game wasn't even half way complete when it was released, and the half that was there at release was bugged in some way.
3. My favorite game at the moment is a single player game so there is no compettion, but yeah, I bet there are a lot of AoC haters that are just hating on AoC because it's no their favorite game. Those people need to chill out because anybody who knows anythying about MMOs isn't going to stick around AoC for very much longer. My entire guild went back to Vanguard, and if you know anything about Vanguard you know what a bold statment that is. My other on-line freinds have either gone back to WoW or are waiting on something else.
Although they are fixing things left and right, they are introducing new bugs and creating new class balance problems nearly as fast as they are fixing them. They are introducing a crap PvP system in a game that was advertised as being an open PvP system. They talk about grand 200+ people battles, when the 40 player battles don't even work right. They continue to pump out all kinds of hype, but they can't fix even the most basic problems.
What really cracks me up is all the fanboys who pretend nothing is wrong with the game. Every AoC forum is full of flames for a reason, they are just too dim to see it.
To answer your question OP, I don't hate Funcom. It would be kind of silly to hate any video game company. But their customer service and lack of communication are absolutely horrible, that was my main reason for quitting. Some people act like AoC killed their puppy though.
And I like posting about AoC here because it was the last MMORPG that I played. And while waiting for others to come out, I like to browse forums while doing some rigging and modeling in Blender. But some people do seem to hate AoC a little too much, dare I say in an unhealthy way. You have to admit though, the forums for AoC here and the official forums are like a train wreck - it's horrible to look at, but you can't turn away.
1. They see the potential of AoC but are frustrated by the present condition of the game. 2. They fell for the hype, are slightly naive and expected an 100% polished game on release? 3. What you mean to say is that players have allowed themselves to "accept" poor quality product without taking a stance? Well my friend you are wrong. Although your points 1-3 are pretty accurate.
Anyone who just "accepts" bad product deserves bad product. If you don't 1) raise your voice and demand quality and 2) show your dissatisfaction by a) returning bad product and b) cancelling subscriptions.... then you will go through life being manipulated and being another one of the mindless sheep.
We have a choice and need to exercise it. You don't NEED to play an MMO if the MMO is bad. Life will go on without it.

Actually I disagree if people are so blind that they upgrade their pc and stuff without knowing any facts it's on their own cape. And FC didn't focus on the bad sides of a game who would do that? I mean of you got something running around up there you would know it's not how you sell yourself.
I don't say that FC didn't do anything wrong, but they never lied they just did choose as all software companies do to exclude the negative things about the game. Not telling is not the same as lying.
These people screwed themselves plain and simple.. in the age with internet and computers all over people should be more sceptical.
I would expect people to be naive and not knowing better if they never toched a computer but if you have been playing games for a while which most likely 99% of the gamers who signed up for AoC is I would suspect they would be more aware... Obivously they weren't and now they're crying because they think they got screqwed over because they bought something which isn't what they expected.
People create their own perspective and percive things differently and I must say I'm amazed that there is so many people falling for hypes over and over again..
I don't make excuses for any game company and don't protect them but people need to be able to have at least a tad of thought before jumping over the cliff.
FC focused on the things that worked on their press conferences. So for people using computer you have a responsiblity for your own choices.
No one forced people to go buy AoC it was a free choice and when it doesn't work as people expected within weeks of release.
It's actually sad to see that people which have been playing so much games are so easily hooked on a hype and most of the hype is created by the players themselves and rumours which isn't confirmed even.

I think that you have a very narrow definition of "lying". A very narrow definition that is not widely accepted.
You say the following:
Not telling is not the same as lying.
Isn't this generally called a lie by omission? Because that is what I call it.
If you can't agree that is a lie by omission then I suppose we will have to leave it at that and agree to disagree. Since we will probably never get past that fundamental disagreement.
However I maintain that I, and people who agree with me, are funadmentally being reasonable when we consider Funcom dishonest even though you and I do not agree on what is lie. Even if you do not agree, it is at least within the realm of being reasonable for me say I consider them dishonest. I mean I am not just stuff out of my ass like people do about a lot of other games (especially if SOE is involved).
This is what happens when a game is hyped a bit too much.
I guess. Personally I think, they pulled the wrong crowd in. You see vanguard did it too, pull in the 'hardcore' players. These hardcore players are still trolling SOE SWG, they don't have a life and are just angry people. AoC should have kept to the true players, the causal gamers. Pft I just hope darkfalls comes out or something so they herd over there, maybe warhammer will attract them. Anyone who seeks out just to troll a game over and over needs to relook there life goals.
I didn't fall for the marketing manuvers or infos released, i felt for a rather smooth and funny open beta and I felt for the 1-20 reviews, Im angry at FC cause they couldnt keep the level of polish and fun on the rest of the game :<
1. They see the potential of AoC but are frustrated by the present condition of the game.
That's me right there.
This game is beautiful, and it really does have soo much potential, but it just isn't there!
The game feels like a shell, in all honesty. There is content, but just not in the right places, or not enough of it - I'm not quite sure.
Also, the game doesn't feel MMO right now. With the instances especially. I'm not sure if it's just because I'm on a PvP server, but there is no real community.
There doesn't seem to be a hub anywhere, of players trading, chatting or anything for that matter.
This lack of community feel, along with the lack of player customisation is what makes it a flop in my eyes.
By lack of player customisation I don't mean player character, I mean in-world. Leaving your 'mark' in some way.
Wether that be by "Weapon created by [insert name]" on craftskilled items, or player housing.
The Guild Cities are very generic - all the same, and very much point-n-click in their creation.
They have no individualism in them at all.
These player customisation/individualisation touches, are what makes a game RPG to me.
Not just lvling your character, but leaving your mark on an ever changing playerworld.
I guess. Personally I think, they pulled the wrong crowd in. You see vanguard did it too, pull in the 'hardcore' players. I was going to fork out $50 bucks on AOC but I stopped to investigate first. After a few strong dissapointments with a couple MMOs, one starts thinking first and then acting. I decided to just browse the AoC forums for a couple weeks and see what is going on with the game and what the comunity was like.
I have been watching a thread on AoC forums about grey elites now for a week and from what I see there I doubt I would invest in the game because even the hotest topic (4000+ post and 200+ pages, which I read BTW) lacks any real response from development.
The silience speaks volumes of what I could expect for customer support. If Funcom can't even respond to a game breaking issue I doubt they are really interested in gaining new customers or just flat out don't care about their player base.
Anyone remember D&L, irth worlds? Is AoC about to go the same direction?

haha. that post made my day. thanks alot for it .
/agreed
I see people who complain about AoC and then rant ad infinitum about how much crap it is.
SOMEHOW
these people have like.. I dont know.. some form of brain damaged amnesia associated with the launch of virtually any other MMO.
Pick an MMO that is a subscription game and has seen the light of day in the US, and I can hand you a can of lightining-hot hateraide at some point int he game's life (usually the first few months) about this that or the other.
UO- first few eeks?
AO- first few weeks?
DaoC- dupes/exploits anyone?
WoW- First Month? (Wait in line much?)
SWG (How ya like them jedi?)
Vanguard? (DOA)
Almost all MMO's have had problems ESPECIALLY at the outset. Its the nature of the beast. Does that mean UO, AO, DaoC, WoW, or SWG were complete crap and unsucessful games?
And, FYI, yes, playing AoC like it is lineage 2 is, IMHO, retarded. If you are running an instance 20 times in a row then you reap what you sow.
There is *ample* venon with any game on release (ie, Tabula Rasa, AoC, etc...just from recent history).
People seem to forget the definition of the words 'opinion' and 'subjective'. Some might find a reason to absolutely loathe and detest any given game, and others might not.
It all comes down to, whomever yells the loudest and screams the most must be correct. The insults will be flung, and tirades will be made. If your opinion doesn't match, then obviously there is something wrong with you.
Please notice that I give neither a thumbs up or thumbs down to either game I mentioned.

Yeah i agree with you, AoC was bought by a lot of people and it is only logical that some will not like it.
And the people who dont like speak the loudest, as does that do dont have time to and are playing and enjoying the game :-P

Actually Funcom did flat out lie to everyone's face. I'll list the most blantantly known ones.
1. DX10 is up and running and will be in at launch. Day or so after launch "DX10 will be added into the game in the coming months" That bait n switch is a flat out LIE alot of people bought the game assuming DX10 was a launch feature, its even on the box that its a DX10 game. Currently it is NOT a DX10 game.
2. Sieges will be in the game at Launch.... flat out lie...Sieges were not in at launch. Cities were unable to level to the appropriate level for guilds to build siegable keeps. This was not a bug...this feature was simply off.
3. Last year numerous times they stated the game is fully ready to launch we're just polishing. This is a lie again..its obvious the moment you log in that yes tortege is fully ready but the rest of the game is not. If they'd of launched last year with these same issues people would be screaming far worse...its like people forgot this particular lie. This is why its NOT on the console it can not pass the requirements to be certified for console users.
I'd list others but I'd have to spend alot of time double checking the facts since funcom is pretty good & sneaky about covering their tracks.
Funcom has been really dishonest. Their game would be fairing pretty decently with people who are unhappy with the game if they'd of been more upfront about alot of key features. By covering the truth with slick spin and marketing speaches alot of people are venomous which is sad because Age of Conan is not a bad game its just not ready to be on the mass market.

And then there is not much else to do for those ppl that had planned to play AOC for next months other than bitch and complain repeatedly about how bad the game was and how they were treated by Funcom. Thats just perfectly normal if you ask me.
no people created an illusion by themselves of a perfect game..
Anyone seen Amasing Avery lately, im sure he has good reasons why AOC has all these problems. Well he use too.

I'm over my 'Hate Funcom/AoC' period now. I've learnt my lesson and got my money back.
Still going to post and express my feelings and opinions on the subject in other peoples threads
*hears everyone groan*
Be paid for Beta Testing, don't pay to Beta Test.
Is saying DX10 is part of the game then not including it not lying?
Waiting for the next thing

No longer using Xshite. Here's my Wakoopa:

It's funny how that works.
Why the hate?
Because people - lots of people - in fact the majority who tried to play Conan past the very first levels are feeling like
being ...
FunCON -ed.
Enough said: the commercial market will take care of it further.
So Funcom put a gun to your head and told you to buy these things. LOL
