Glad I returned. Just one more thing.

Hi all. Extremely happy with my decision to return to Vanguard. The game now runs great on very high graphics settings and as all of you know, many fixes to the game have been made. Hopefully soon enough the game will become even greater and we get more content, fixes, updates, the lot. Anyway I just made a new charatcer on the Halgar server and would really like to join a friendly, active and helpful clan. Please let me know if you are looking for  a new in-game friend and adventurer, and if any clans would have me, I would love to join. Thanks for reading. :)    Oh, and the name is 'Issyl'.

I also just left AOC and returned to my Station Pass and Vanguard, i will wait and see how Warhammer turns out but im sadly very disappointed in all the recent releases. They can say what they want but Sony has done a good job finishing up Vanguard.

I never bashed Aoc, i think it has something to be desired IMO, Instancing for one, way to much. What i didnt get is how the hype for the game was in the clouds yet lots are leaving now.

For me Vanguard is a much better game, all in all so far i like it very much. Just wish it would implement a pvp system like this - Ultimate pvp system

Then it would be the most kick ass game out there.

I didnt get the hype for AoC either. AoC is now exactly what I thought it to be. In fact, compared to what I expected, it had a really nice and smooth launch. Still people complain about it now.

But why would anyone be impressed by AoC in the first place anyway ? Where does this hype come from ? Nothing of what I hear about AoC now came by surprise !

What this game will be was described on Wikipedia and in gamer resources long ago. More than a year ago, when Vanguard released, I was asked if I would ever play AoC and my answer was already a definite "no, never, thats not even a roleplaying game" back then.

So where does this hype come from ? Do people not inform themselves about the games that get hyped ?

Mind, I *love* the original Conan stories. I would also love a game about the Conan world where I would get an experience that would make me feel to be in said world. I would love to have the huge world described in Conan come to live. I would love to have real PvP battles between armies, being able to conquer lands, etc. But AoC is anything but that. AoC hasnt been created by roleplayers, and it hasnt been created for roleplayers. The simple fact alone that one can only play 3 races already tells me all too much about the spirit of the game. THREE RACES ??? You got to be KIDDING, man ! Theres like a douzen races described in the original stories. Theres white races and black and yellow ones.

And the awful AoC advertisement (most brutal game ever etc) is simply horrible and has nothing to do with the beauty and excellent storytelling of the original stories of Robert E. Howard.

Vanguard really has very little in common with AoC.

Vanguard is a huge, seamless world (no zones, no instances).  If you can see a distant mountain, you can reach the top of it (may need a flying mount though).  AoC is heavily instanced.

Vanguard is primarily a PvE game at this time.  PvP will get attention once PvE is balanced.  AoC is primarily PvP.

The Vanguard community, on the whole, is more mature,  Many have been playing MMOs since Ultima Online or Everquest.  The AoC community is, well, let's just say they tend to be younger.

Many people left Vanguard to try AoC - especially those on the PvP server, but most of them have returned and brought other AoC refugees with them.

AoC may be a great game someday, but its launch was worse than Vanguards, and the improved Vanguard is now benefiting from this.

ARE YOU FREAKIN KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?  AoC's launch was worse then Vanguards?! what planet were you on when VG launched.  not only did the game get rated worst game of 2007 but also half the stuff in game was broken or bugged all to hell.  i dont even want to get into how bad VG's launch was.  AoC's launch was nice, i could play the game w/o crashing to desktop every 5 seconds.  The zones transfer over quickly, unlike VG where at launch it took me at least 3 to 4 minutes to chunk over.

I tried VG again a few days ago, i wasnt impressed. its all still the same the only thing i noticed was that it ran smoother and i played a day without crashing once.  VG is fun yeah but Aoc and VG are on two different levels.  And in my opinion AoC stomps VG

Your right for the most part, AOC's "launch" was much better then Vg's however i take what he is saying as "lots of folks are leaving" after 2 weeks launch.Imo AOC did not meet up to its hype.

Calm down. There's other ways to express your view than capitals and exclamation marks.

Fair enough yes, VG's launch was dreadful as anyone will tell you,

but that doesn't mean AoC is automatically better. AoC (to me) looks lifeless and dull, I mean have you seen the armour sets!? They look like something in runescape or something. Not to mention the lack of races. VG will hold people as it is a GREAT idea getting better, whereas AoC to me is just plain dull, and I don't see why I'd want to play a game which uses the fact that it is violent as an advertising ploy. But of course, this is all opinion.

    Hello!

  • SlydeRuleSlydeRule Member UncommonPosts: 13

Well, since AoC did not even appeal to me enough to try it, I am only basing my "worse launch" opinion on the many posts on the Vanguard forums by people who experienced both launches.

I haven't seen a single person say that Vanguards launch was worse.  Some say they were the same, but most say AoC was worse.

Vanguards poor launch was due to the game being released too early, with too many bugs, and system requirements that were too high which made the game unplayable for some.  Very few, if any, complained about the overall game-play of Vanguard.  I have played since beta and have enjoyed the game immensely.  I have 16 characters (every class) on 2 accounts (same as I did in EQ).

For AoC, many say it was released too soon as well, and with many bugs.  People are leaving in droves because they hate the 'instanced' world, the limited number of class and race selections, and the ease of leveling.

Every game has a core group of loyalists, no matter how much others may hate it.  Heck, there are still people who love SGW after NGE !!!  So, to say AoCs launch was worse than Vanguards is all a matter of opinion.  Some will agree, some will disagree.  That's just human nature.

AoC launch worse than Vanguard?  Are you out of your mind!?  Ok its your opinion and all but quite frankly its very wrong.  I played both games the day they launched.

    My experiences:

    AoC

    * I could play it like a normal game and on the first day I was playing on high settings and getting 25-40 fps.  Few drops to login screen but nothing that really affected my gameplay too much.

    Vanguard

    * Lag lag lag lag.  Broken graghics and the FPS would drop to 6-10 then max out around 20-23 fps.  Seamless world yes but when you crossed those invisible borders you could hang for ages.  People left in droves after the first month because it was severely broken to the point of being unplayable.  I left after 6 months and it was just getting stable then.  Patches took way too long to get implemented compared to AoC which is doing 2 a week.

Disagree on the community because unless you played on every single server then you can't say one game is better than the other.  On the RP-PvP server I find most people I play with are mid 30's who have been playing games for 20 years so they know the score.

Regarding PvE and PvP I have to agree.  I left Vanguard because PvP was pointless and a after thought.  Crafting, diplo helped with RP which I liked.  In a way if you took out the best in both games you would have a monster MMO

    Completely agree with this...

in all honesty, both launches were bad in their own ways. Both companies making the different games are running their games badly and well in certain aspects. SOE updated fixes horribly... it's taken them a year to fix everything while I doubt AoC won't be finished with their fixes by the end of summer. FC is bad because they have the most propogandic marketting schemes that it sickens me. But, both games are working well at this point in their certain aspects. Everything that is broken in AoC is working for VG and the vice-versa. VGs combat is dull and has pointless PvP, whereas AoC's combat is, arguably, very fun and at least at this point has some sort of pvp (they have some good ideas for the future, just hope they freakin' add things instead of talk about adding things!). AoC's crafting is completely broken and has ill to no content past 50, whereas VG (accordingly now) has a vast, playable, seamless world with endless possibilities and great amount of content... with a great crafting system now, apparently as well.

If they combined everything that is good about both games... yeah, I agree, we would have something that could easily crush, not only WoW, but any game in it's path. It's a shame that that would never happen though, at least not for another ten years.

How the fuck did this turn into a AoC vs Vanguard when it was about a player asking for a guild.. I mean wtf guys

Because it seems that because of the hype a lot of players got into AoC thinking it would be the game of their dreams - i.e. EQ with a gritty, realistic game world.  When they were disappointed the obvious alternative is the REAL EQ2 - i.e. Vanguard.  Which had a shitty launch but is now playing very well, although still fairly unpolished, the gameplay is starting to shine.

OTOH, as a poster said above, if you were wise to the hype, then you would have expected nothing more from AoC than a good, solid combat-based MMO (like City of Heroes).  I also find the graphics and quests in AoC to be so good that the game amounts to being quite immersive for me.  But I never expected a truly open-ended game like EQ or Vanguard from AoC.

At the end of the day, some people who have been disappointed with AoC are "discovering" Vanguard and because they got new comps to play AoC with, are finding Vanguard very good looking, and it has always had basically great gameplay and a huge, open world to adventure in, and really is the true spiritual successor to EQ in the modern MMO world.

Personally I love both games, they're my favourite MMOs at the moment.  I hope Vanguard sorts out its animation/sync problems soon though, it really does look terribly amateurish sometimes, despite the high quality of the graphics in other ways.

I've been checking the game out for the first time since Open Beta the past two days. Very much improved. The small staff of Devs on this project should be given huge kudos for their accomplishments!

I'm really liking it so far. The default graphics, for me, were horrible, but once I got it running on Very High it actually looks really good. I love the freedom and the vast lands to explore. Too early to say much more, but they got a hook in me and I'll see how things progress.

One comment though, it's really a shame that SOE cut the development team as severely as they did. Playing the game minus the serious issues the game had at launch allows you to really see the potential for this game. If SOE had put a year of fully staffed development into this and done a relaunch, the game would likely be huge right now.

I hope if subscription numbers climb after this month, they will consider putting some more resources into the title.

You have to play both games to understand. Basically Vanguard is the opposite of AoC. AoC is 90% combat. In Vanguard you can put your teeth into 3 spheres. Thats the big difference and those who got bored in AoC now see the advantages of vanguard. I like both games, i just wanted to show why people come to vanguard after AoC.

  • TerranahTerranah Member UncommonPosts: 3,575

When Vanguard launched it had terrible performance, and like AOC a lot of people with perfectly decent gaming rigs were told they had crappy computers and needed to upgrade.  Also there were a lot of fanbois stating the game ran fine for them and something must be wrong with our computers.  So I see some similiarites.

The consensus that Vanguard ran poorly was broad, but by no means complete.  Rabid fanbois will defend even the worst. People toted their fps as if they had made some kind of personal best running the 1500 meter race.

Anyway, it seems a shame to congratulate a company on something they should have done a long time ago, which is make the game run well.  But that is not on SOE that is on Sigil.  SOE rescued this game from complete shutdown probably and maybe that is one of the few good things they have done lately. I suspect a combination of  Vanguard fixing their code and us upgrading our rigs has benefited Vanguard.  The game now looks and runs beautifully at the same time, atleast for me.

SOE seems to do something different. They change the structure of the company. Why have a full dev team for each game ? Once some development is stadarized a single department of artists and animators is able to craete graphical content for all games. They lizenced the U3 engine for The Agency and it is possible that there will be some synergy with the U2.5 engine from Vanguard. The whole progress is slow at the beginning, but very rewarding in the future.

I have been playing for the past week or so and I can already tell the increase in players.  The game is SOOO much better.  If this is the way it launched I and many other player would not have left.

Give the game a try again.  It is awesome.
