It's free technically, but once you hit vet (level 100) you really need access to cash only places in the game in order to level up your characters in a reasonable fashion.
I've been a vet for almost 2 months now, I think, and I am 6% of the way to expert (which is like 110). It literally takes 10,000 kills to move up 1 % point (it goes all the way out to 4 decimal points, and you get about .0001 per kill)

Of course, this game is somewhat unique in that your characters fight automatically for you (unless they get knocked down). Which means you can actually leave your computer running all night and get experience (there's even a special place in game just for it). But at the same time, not everyone can do that...but if you can, it does help the grind a lot.
im trying to look for a GREAT mmorpg and i just wanted to know, is sword of the new world free?
Sword of the New World was amazing when I first got into it. I actually played the "Granado Espada" version, and fell completely in love with it for the fact that it was free.
The graphics are almost completely top notch quality for graphics. The sound track is also really great, and I put it on my iPhone. <.<;
The fighting is fun, but it's more of a casual game in my opinion. The unique ability to control three characters versus just one is what really makes GE/SotNW stand out (and strongly reminded me of the closest thing to a FF MMO I could find as far as play style goes). I'm afraid it won't get very far due to bad communication between players and dev's.
Yeah, considering that the developers are Korean making the game for Korea, there's not much communication between players of other versions and them. Still, they are rolling out some neat stuff for 3.0 (you can find videos on Youtube). At least in theory.
The trouble with the game though is the end game. It just really stinks.
They keep adding new content, but it's hard to access it, even if you have vet (level 100) characters. Because it's hard to get good gear (particularly armor) to survive in the areas they add. You can squad up with other people and tackle areas, but finding people to do so is difficult because there really aren't that many players. And there is almost no in game communication unless you are already in a clan.
(And let me note, most of the best gear in the game is essentially cash shop. They don't sell it directly from the shop, but you need cash shop items to get the gear. In theory you can buy it from other players, but at 45-50 million vis, you'll be farming a month just to buy one)
It's all very frustrating. I'm about to quit, myself, once I spend all my gold.
I joined a clan that I hoped would let me do some of the harder stuff in the game, but most of them just AFK all the time. The one time they actually did do something, they never bothered to tell me, so I left.
And yet there aren't a lot of other options for clans. Most of the big ones are full of hypercompetitive jerks, the sort that join low level PvP tournaments and use elite gear and clan buffs to wipe the field with new players, or botters (since there is apparently no penalty for being caught botting, at least if you are cash shop user). I'm frustrated with the difficulty of getting equipment in the game, so I understand why so many people bot, but I don't approve of it either. Unfortunately it seems to be an accepted practice by both the people who run the game and the players.
That's really good feedback Trace. We are making a couple of changes on Wednesday with Nocturnal Sonata. Polishes become free. We are releasing level 100 Ancestral items (5 Mysterious Powders per item) and a whole slew of other things to help with the "item gap" as I call it.
We are also releasing pets this fall which should help facilitate getting 92Es.
That is extremely good news, actually. Good thing I still have a lot of mystery powder left.
I actually think the way 92 elites work is pretty fair, except on the non-PVP server, Orpesia, where you need to buy cash shop items just to access the quest to make them (I think about $5, at least if you don't buy the LOD pack).
But the actual time involved in getting the 92 elites (about 5 hours for one) and the cost in mystery powder is quite fair. But I would like to see the WoD and ottite perfume made tradeable. Or have some shorter, cheaper versions. I almost killed myself staying up trying to get the most out of my 24 hours there.
Good to hear about the pets. I was talking to about the only friend in my old clan the other day, and he mentioned he really wished the game had pets (he's been thinking about also leaving the clan and/or game). I mentioned they were coming sometime, but didn't know when. If it's the fall, I hope you start promoting that soon, to keep people interested. (And better promotions than the stuff on IGN, more concrete details and such)
it might be free but i never got past the character creation screen. it took over 5hours to download the client. then it took another 4 hours to update. it took almost a half an hour to set up an account. it kept rejecting anything that i typed in. it will not let you create more than one character and i never was able to figure out how to actually get the dam thing started. don't waste your time on this one. it is garbage.

It won't let you make more than one character until you finish the tutorial.
Which you start by starting the game with one character (you enter by clickon in the bottom right-ish of the quarters screen. It is a little confusing at first.
yes the game is completely free I played it for awhile, but got bored. no restrictions on gameplay or "premium account" they might have a cash shop type system, but i dont remember them having one.
When it launched (like a year ago), it was a pay to play game, and you bought the retail box. However, they quickly scrapped that and went to a free model, with a cash shop.
The cash shop is useful, but the latest patch has addressed a lot of the inequities in it. (You still need it to level up to Expert, though, IMHO, otherwise it's just insanely slow).
However, thanks to a combination of overly passive marketing ("oh no, they ignored my press release, guess I won't bother the site anymore instead of bugging them until they post it") and a short attention span of the press, a lot of sites still say you have to buy it (or things like there is a level cap at 20th, which there hasn't been probably 10 months)

It's free as a bird.
Free to some extent, once you get higher in level it buying things from the cash shop really facilliatates leveling.
It is also a huge download, and the only free way to download is slow.
