LOTRO sales! 300.000 only on europe

Tell us about Lord of the Rings…

The number of subscribers is into six figures and we’ve had 300,000 box sales in Europe - you can also double that into the States. If you want to enter the fantasy-based market you must be mad. Unless you have a licence like Lord of the Rings, it’s too competitive. We are launching a space-based combat game which you can play online, but our game is all action like Battle Star Gallactica. Whether there’s space in the fantasy market I don’t know.

So 900,000 box sales in about 14 months... Not to mention they have the most major fantasy IP that ever existed. Doesn't sound that great to me...

600,000 box sales in the states? Not when they had less than 250k box sales in 2007...

Saying we sold "x" numbers in "x" amount of months means absolutely squat. those are just pitiful bragging rights that again, mean squat in the real world.

Tell us how many have stayed (truthfully) and how many "hundreds of thousands" have quit just as quickly. keeping subs past the free trial or even 1 month for the future is what counts, not initial sales,  and that money doesnt last long.

can you smell that?!!...............there is nothing quite like it.....................the smell of troll in the morning............i love that smell.

  • graillgraill Member Posts: 257

Why does CCP/Red show quarterly earnings/subs at 127k and change and that MMochart place show close to 235k active subs? who's spooning who? Methinks MMochart needs to get their second hand info from more reliable sources than the donut person.

Why make theese kind of threads..? It only invites the trolls and mindless speculation.. none of us knows how many subs LotrO have and we problably never will... but so what..?

    If WoW = The Beatles
    and WAR = Led Zeppelin
    Then LotrO = Pink Floyd

It's funny when people don't read their FAQ either.  http://www.mmogchart.com/faq/

    2. Where do you get your numbers?

My numbers come from a variety of sources, and some games have more than one source. These sources include the following:

The Lord of the Rings Online (Accuracy Rating: B)

Launched on April 24, 2007, LotrO has been a big success for Turbine, winning several awards and garnering many positive reviews. While exact subscriber numbers have never been officially released, in August 2007 Turbine claimed LotRO was the second largest MMORPG developed in North America. This leaves out games like RuneScape, Dofus, and EVE Online; essentially, Turbine was indicating that the game had more current subscribers than EQ or EQ II, but less than World of Warcraft. Based on this statement, I estimate that as of August 2007 LotRO had approximately 200,000 subscribers. Inside sources place the number of active subscribers at 150,000 as of December 2007. http://www.lotro.com/

that site hasnt been updated in months, look at every game and u see they havent changed the sub numbers for months now, mmogchart is more reliable. its not all facts, but the best estimates u can find on the net, its funny that ppl here shout how unreliable mmogchart is and in other topics cheer for xfire numbers

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

  • BloodnokBloodnok Member UncommonPosts: 75

ANybody could set up a website with MMO sub charts on it and claim inside sources gave them information. I could do it in about 15 minutes and make up all the numbers myself. It's all educated guesses, nothing more.

There isn't a credible figure quoted by anyone in this thread.  Turbine has never posted sub numbers, so the world will never know.

But I'll take bets against the reference to 1  million subs, not on the number of servers they current have open.

well they sold 900k boxes how many digital downloads ? at least more 200k so lets say at least 25% of that sales are subscribers and lifetime accounts, thats about 300k subscribers witch is pretty good in my opinion.

It isn't easy to guess the number of players in an MMO, but I the estimate from MMOGChart is in line with the current numbers.

Just look at the amount of servers LOTRO has.  There's still under 15 servers.  Now, almost all MMOs give their servers a max online capacity of about 5000 players or less.  WoW has almost 200 servers; so it's easy to guess that their active subscribers are well over 5 million players.

LOTRO is definitely under 200k active subscribers/players.  I play right now, and I know for a fact the chat channels do get quiet.  You'll see a lot of chatters who are mainly the same people.

Guilds (Kinships) advertise 50 members as being a lot in a guild.  Compare this to other highly active games.  In a WoW guild, you could see 150+ members, not logged in at the same time or course.

The good thing about LOTRO is that it isn't dead yet, but patience is often required.  I guarantee you're not going to get a group within an hour on a week night.  People usually group up to do quests and book chapters.  There's lots of Roleplaying as well.

300k box sales? 900k box sales??  These don't mean a thing except that we bumped Turbines revenue by millions.

If you want to get an idea of how many players there are in an MMO, just look at the amount of servers there are.  Most server capacities have that max amount of players in mind, that's one reason why different servers are required to run an MMO.  Max numbers result in Queues, such that many have seen with WoW, and such is the birth of new servers.

So if you want to make an estimate for yourself, start with 5000 per server multiplied by the number of servers the game has.  There you have it... an idea of how many people actually play.

    Compared to what? WoW?

Take WoW out of the eqation then look at it again. These are respectable numbers.
