Earth and Beyond: The Final Two Weeks

KoltraneKoltrane Member UncommonPosts: 1,049

Starting Wednesday, Earth & Beyond enters its final two weeks of service.  Sunset is scheduled for 12:01AM GMT September 22, or 8:01PM EDT September 21.  Diehards who remain in the E&B universe have 14 more days of playing time.

The sunset FAQ is available at the Earth & Beyond website.  It ends with this inauspicious entry:

Q: What happened to the devs?
A: The E&B team is being moved onto several other projects, most notably Ultima X: Odyssey.

Perhaps that question needs to be readdressed.

E&Bers, enjoy your final fortnight as your persistent world sails into the sunset.

MMORPG.COM Staff, i'm sure i speak for all of us at earth and beyond when i say thank you for your support, and may no community ever have to go through this again.

i've played earth and beyond for nearly 2 years now, and i can honestly say i don't think i'll ever experience anything like it again.  whether you personally loved it or hated it, i've learned so much from this game that i wouldn't have learned anywhere else.

    gonna miss this game :(

I played E&B for a time (LVL 135 JE) and I although I left quite some time ago I would like to offer my congradulations to EA for giving me yet another reason to never buy anything they do, touch or have an association with.

WTG EA! ::::28:: you ruined your name on this one lolz, people actually hate you now gratz!

  • GlacianNexGlacianNex Member UncommonPosts: 654

Well actually people hated EA ever since they ruined Ultima Online. I swear anything EA touches turns into crap. Sure they make good sports games but they should not do anything else, they have a long history of ruining great titles and destorying awesome companies like Origin and Westwood. I hope EA goes bankrupt soon so they will not ruin any more games.

Yes it does. Ultima X: Odyssey was cancelled months ago. The devs are problably working on Battlefield 2 or maybe they went to work for another company.

EA has lost a lot of fans in the past 3-5yrs. The only thing that's really keeping them afloat is their sports games and maybe The Sims. Oh well. I don't think a lot of people were going to buy Ultima X:Odyssey anyway.

Hi,  I have been playing EnB for a very long time, TE 150, TT 150, JD 150, JE 150 (nax skills) and PW 150image.  All my toonz are uberimage, and all have a great reputationimage.  The community that was created with EnB cannot be compared to any others.  I have tried SWG, EvE, EQ, FFXI, and Ultima Online (a few years ago).  None of these games come close to the creativity, and originality that EnB has.  I am currently playing CoH, and I must admit, even though the concept is original, it still has a long road to travel before it even comes close to what EnB is, or was.

I am extremely upset at the decision to sunset EnB.image!  I think that companys like EA image that own games like this forget that there are real people controling the characters that inhabit these worlds.  It might sound crazy, but us, the users, develop an attachment to out characters.  Even my main, Crazboy my TE looks like me.  Alot of work has gone into developing our characters, and it angers me image  that EA woun't even consider releasing our accounts and source code for some other company to take a crack at perhaps making something better out of EnB.

I would like to take this moment to thank all on Andromeda Server who have helped me along the way (Serinna, Zeck <wink wink>.  To all my fellow players, thanks for making EnB the best MMORPG ever.  To all on the other 3 servers, sorry we never had a chance to hunt along side each other, I wish you all the best of luck in the future.

As for myself, I am going to park my toonz scattered accross the EnB galaxy, take as many screen shots as possibe along the way, I will say my good byes to all my friends, and wait for the disconnection logo to flash in the top left corner of my screen. image

It was a blast while it lasted.  I turfed 2 1/2 years of my life in this game, and it was worth every minute.  Take care everyone, I think that this is it for MMORPGs for me.  EA destroyed all my desires to join any other games.  I don't want this to happen again.

EA lost my business from this. Not because they shut down EnB. I understand it wasn't performing like they wanted and they are there to make money. The reason I won't be buying an EA product ever again is because of the way they shut it down.

Did they allow the devs to push the last patch they had finished? No. Did they allow the devs to develop something that would close the game out properly? No. Did they allow the devs to even say goodbye? No. They simply took the devs from EnB and moved them without any notice to the EnB community. They showed they didn't see a community of game players, but just a bunch of paying subscribers. By doing that they took my trust as a game player and as a paying subscriber and threw it in the trash.

Will EA suffer because I'm not buying thier products anymore? No, probably not. That doesn't matter though. They broke my trust and will never gain it back.

The only game I have really enjoyed is Earth and Beyond. A tale in the Desert was a close second (lack of players caused me to quit). Tried Rubies of Evertide, Linage, Dark age of Camelot, and Anarchy Online. Liked none of them.

What a sad occasion.  Well, I played E&B for over 2 years, and left when they first made the announcement some months ago.  Still, it is very sad indeed. All those hours, all the fun, all for naught.

Or is it? Didn't I have a great time? Didn't I meet some amazing friends who I still play other titles with today?  Didn't I take pride in my achievments in the game? Yes, yes and yes.  It was time well spent, imho.  Will I miss it? No - I have moved on, and lost little.  So to all of those lamenting the sunset, don't let it get to you - focus on what you did, the fun you had and the friends you made. It was worth every minute of gameplay.

    tis a sad day coming.....

i started e&b during beta, and enjoyed the game up til they announced the ending of the game, EA screwed the pooch with their desicions on how things was to be done, from the very start the devs hands were tied by the ones higher up.

their actions confirmed that i didnt want to support EA games, i got rid of my ultima account, and i refuse to purchase EA games for now, even tho they own maxis, i will not get simcity4...
will my actions bankrupt EA, no it wont, but i am using my power as a customer to show my opinion by not supporting a company that doesnt plan ahead...

EA just wasn't ment for MMORPGs. But They still making millions of The Sims, battlefield, their sports games ,etc... Unless you just dont like FPS games, you will be buying battlefield 2 image

I played E&B for a little over a year. I was dismayed by EA's announcement of E&Bs sunset. The community in E&B was great. And the game play was addicting. I will miss it.

Count me as one of those who hate EA because of the shut down of E&B. Like someone else said, its not just the shut down, but rather EA's other actions that make me feel they do not care about its customers. First, they never did any real marketing for E&B. Secondly, they grouped the success of Sims Online and E&B and then blamed their low numbers on E&B. Finally, I hate to see a game with so much potential go to waste, just because, as appears, that EA wanted end the last of the Westwood games. Whats the point of buying a company and stop producing their games. It was not like E&B competed with UO. I am also upset how it appears EA is gobbling up smaller game companies and destroying the small companies products. Just look at Origins. It like EA is saying, your gonna play our games, and play them how we want and your gonna like it. Another company did that and people hated...mmm can remmember their name...Microloft...Mickroshloft....Microsoft! Yeah remember them?

Just my 2 cents. Good Luck EnBers! I will remember to all always!

This was my first MMORPG.  I think it is a fabulous game.  I was so poisoned in regards to EA and how they pulled the game and the screwed the E&B community.  I have not even considered purchasing any of the new releases from EA for my PS/2 or PC. My opinion is EA management really missed the boat on this one.  Burn me once, but not twice.... image

It certainly seems that EA wasn't meant for the MMO genre.  Here's a quick recap:

    • Motor City Online - Canceled
    • Majestic - Canceled
    • Origin: Ultima Worlds Online - Terminated in Production
    • Earth & Beyond - Canceled
    • Ultima X: Odyssey - Terminated in Production

This leaves Ultima Online and The Sims Online.  UO is an undoubted success, but it is seven years old and was written by Origin and made successful by Origin.  EA merely bought them (and UO) and kept the game alive (while they devoured and destroyed any traces of the old Origin Systems).  The Sims Online is a niche game to be sure.  Few would classify it as an overwhelming success.  It does have its fans, but it's not one of the more popular MMOs out there.  I tend to think that it would be in the above list if it didn't carry the name of EA's most successful PC franchise.

I never played E&B, but I'm sad to see it go.  I think it held a lot of promise and would still be going strong today if the plug hadn't been pulled 6 months ago.

I also played E&B for 2 years, was the first MMOG I played, was great fun.  As soon as sunset was announced, I didn't log on more than twice, expecially after hearing no further patches would be pushed out.  That was lame.  I mean at least have like 10000 V'rix spawn in every sector after making something like a perma-death patch.  Everyone grouping up trying to save their characters, would have been sweet.  If you were on Galileo, ye may remember me, Yellowdragoon.  I hope everyone can find a new game if they want to find one.  I would recommend Puzzle Pirates. :)

Heh, I wont.  I'd resubscribe to Planetside before supporting them like that.  Now that's a scary thought.

    *sniff* I'll miss EnB

Just bought a book called "Game Art" and EnB was featured on the front page and had a whole spread inside as well, looking so much better than most of the other games in there (the book's a bit dated, hehe.) I had increadibly good experiences playing EnB, and will keep great memories for a long time ... It's really too bad :/

Farewell to Earth and Beyond, and thank you, MMORPG, for caring enough to send an obituary

I find it rather amusing what EA did to EnB. I am also part of the crowd that will not buy another EA product firstly becuase of what they did to UO and secondly becuase of how they treated us Europeon beta testers that helped test EnB for them. They left us out in the cold after promising us that we would get either a download link or some details on how to get the game....then they disconnected all our forum access so we couldn't even ask questions any more.

That was over 2 years ago. I check the maker and publisher of every game I buy...and I will still not nor have I in the last 2 years EVER bought a game with EA anywhere on the box!

I was told 2 years ago that I would end up buying an EA product again. But it will never happen.

One good thing and one bad thing before sunset.

From what I heard, Ceredith, Niobe and some of the other Devs logged on earlier to give all things UBER to all players they came across. Skull shields, GODs, etc. were dropping all over the place for all players. I think that it was awesome they came and had a nice goodbye-session with the players.

Bad thing for me personally is that they messed up with a load of accounts before sunset and lots of players (me included) couldn't log into the game. So, I couldn't even be there to join the sunset party we were organizing with the guild.

All in all the game will certainly be missed. I have had a great time playing these two years and will take a lot of good memories with me and friends with me from there. I am now playing EVE and its really cool. I will also tried some of the other games that are about to come out, but still find it hard to find anything that really compares to E&B.
