I'm with you and i think many people out there wish there was a game with tons of worlds, but even if they did make thousands, they wouldn't be any good or done with any effort. It would take far too much manpower and re using the same meshes over and over.
Most present day engines should have some sort of terrain generator, however it still takes many mobs/sounds/items/meshes to make up each zone. There would be a guarantee of many repeated things just to fill these worlds in.
Cheyenne ,IMO is a rather small company trying to re create a tv show more so than trying to break ground on an MMO.I heard a few rumblings over a few ideas that won't be in the release, but i feel cheyenne is prolly forced to put out the best product they can in a certain timeframe, then try to make some money for there efforts.
Personally i would not enjoy playing any LARGE scale game unless each world/zone looked like some effort and uniqueness was put into it.
There is some HUGE asian game developers out there but ONLY square enix has my confidence in putting out a game that shows effort/size and some uniqueness.Only other devs i can think of able to pull off a huge game world would be SONY backed or BLIZZARD.From what i have seen of blizzard i wouldn't count on it and right now i don't see any SONY backed games striving for that.I think right now the gaming giants are trying to push for  nicer looking games like vanguard/AOC/LOTR ,i don't see any other direction right now.Perhaps if MICROSOFT ever decided to take MMO's seriously, they deff have the studios and money to fund a LARGE scale production, but again no signs of that yet either.

After putting together some thoughts on these subjects, all I can say is I agree!

I cant remember, but I think if the land mass on these planets is not instanced, then we should be fine with 20 at the start,

Atlantis will add more and you are right about the SG. There is nothing stopping from adding a planet later and adding a dialing sequence for that planet. I think they have it pretty easy to be honest. They can create planet upon planet if it stays popular and it warrants it.
They have also talked about the means to inter connect other games with this platform they have. I think SGW is just the beginning of what CME will do.

They do have an ideal setup to do the Turbine / LOTRO strategy, starting off with x worlds (zones) that get you up to a point, then maintaining an update schedule that releases more worlds and story content. Turbine's strat seems to work out fine for everyone, because even if you race ahead, you still can't "finish" the game because new content is guaranteed to come in. So you just go make a new char and keep playing until the next update comes out.

Probably a big reason why they have the least flames of any MMO I've ever played lol.

20 worlds is not bad at all. SWG had like 10 worlds for 2 years and it was still better then what WOW or other big MMO brought in.

EVE is a different story and cannot be compared. Mankind had 900 billion planets and over 200 000 systems…. However, it was pure random and generic.

SGW is bringing 20 worlds fully detailed with some lore and such, can’t go wrong there!

Yah we need to remember, Eve does not have planets per se (or didn't before I quit about a year and a half ago anyways). Eve has  systems, which consist of lots of empty space with background imagery, some objects that look like planets but cannot be interacted with, and stations which actually don't exist - "docking" with one takes you to a screen where you manage your ship and stuff in the "station".

So games with actual zones (worlds) that you visit with your character is completely different - there's no comparison at all to what Eve has.

I understand how EvE works but I"m unsure how you are going to get a massive pantheon of worlds with things to fill them. Meanginful things that is.

its fairly easy to generate content these days, but it also heavily limits the quality of content

depends on what you really want.. privacy or quality?

they went for "a few worlds with quality" and that option disables cluster-world where there is only 1 or 2 servers

they have to make several servers now :)

if whats there is big enough, and interesting, i think most people will enjoy the MMO

Ya its point and click but the combat is more like gears of war where you see any enemy but you dont just stand there shooting each other like idiots, you go find cover and keep the enemy from flanking you. In other words you actually have to think and play tactically or your gonna die.
