I walked past a Lineage2 box that claimed 13million accounts.  That sure puts AoC to shame.

Everything creates huge amounts of negativity on the internet, that's what the internet is for: Negativity, porn and lolcats.

To say this game is a major disappointment is a understatement.

and with 200k subs aoc still remains number 2 in western markets cause lotro is at 150k, u call that game a failure aswell? no its a succes, most modern mmos are struggling to get anywhere near 100k subs

anyway gz to fc, maybe i dont have to read posts about fc going bankrupt rofl.. and all aoc players have fun, im waiting for the secret world of fc :P i like the setting and im just curious, maybe the next update will turn me off but that not a big deal

    MMOs currently playing: -
About to play: Lord of the Rings Online
Played: Anarchy Online (alltime favorite) and lots of f2p titles (honorable mentions: 9Dragons, Martial Heroes, Dekaron, Atlantica Online)

Didn't they already sell over one million copies. If so that would mean they already lost 300k subscribers?

Sorry Eve has over 200k accounts so maybe #3, and Turbine does not give out subscription numbers so you have no idea how many active accounts they have.

Hey, if you enjoy the game fine, but even now the servers are starting to empty out.  Wait till War comes out this fall, Funcom will stuggle to have 50k active accounts.   AoC has flop written all over it mainly because Funcom did a horrible design.   I'd even reactivate my Wow account before reactivating AoC, at least there are things to do in Wow.

Going to be fun playing by yourself won't it

no its 1 million shipped to retailers. 700k keys activated, so about 700k boxes sold (maybe some more) but we dont now how many of that 700k are still playing. i suspect from 350k to 500k are still playing, everyone who still plays claims the servers are alive and kicking, everyone i see playing is surrounded by ppl... but those are not hard facts

to the guy above me: yes aoc will have a very hard time when WAR/Aion/WotlK come out.. we will see then.. for now fc can polish the game before WAR gets out.. (ow and i dont play aoc) and yes eve has around 250k subs so i should have said over 250k for number 2 spot

Big gratz to Funcom! 700k created accounts is awesome! True, we don't know yet how many will stick around, but I think most MMOGs have their retention numbers in roughly the same area, so they'll be doing well in any case.

Id find a number telling how many accounts are still active paying accounts far more interesting, especially if it was from some place they wouldnt be able to just shovel hype.Like a stock holders report,or some such....

I'd like to see this also, as myself and a handful of friends where I live purchases, played for 2-3 weeks, and unsubbed.  I'm not going to hate on AoC...we just found it..."meh" at the present time.

Hope it does grow and improve into something less "meh", so I have something to come back to.

700k bought it, but a MMO dont need sales to survive, they need month to month subscribers.   That they will never publish it.

Funny, did you know that those so called PC gaming charts you go by are all done by speculation with no real data to back them up.

Funcom released a press release stating they have 700,000 accounts. What is so hard to believe. It is the 2nd largest MMO in the western world right now. It replaced LotRO as #2 which is very respectable. When they get some of the missing features in and fix some of the major bugs I predict AoC to hit 1 million + active subscriptions.

You may not like the game and that is your right, but to claim the game is a failure as you and others have stated is grossly overstated.

    AOC should pay you!

Face it this game is SHIT and yeah for a matter of a couple weeks it might hold #2 but can sure you LoTRO will be back in 2nd.

My Sub is cancelled as I am sure alot others...And I can tell you I won't be back with promises and misguided bullshit to boot.  After you lied to me one time you won't do it a second.

Go to their forums, they delete anything negative on the game so potential buyers will be pulled into the crap like everyone else and waste their hard earned money.

Exactly and they start lieing to the public to buy them time to try and put in little bits of fixes than in a couple months they will tell you the big patch is coming, probably just over christmas time.  Keeps given them a nice paycheck for presents for the family.

DESTROY the FUNCOM WARMACHINE stop wasting your hard earned dollars.

If they really backed the game they so called loved they would have given everyone another free month because we all know the one we got wasn't worth a shit.

I remember an ad  on MMORPG.com sometime ago for a game that read:  "..... 15 million accounts....", i think it was for runescape or something.

I hope so because for every bug they fix, the seem to introduce two more; it's AO all over again.   I've cancelled my account and am going to revisit in 12 months.  Hopefully FC will have settled down with the patch frenzy and the game is stable again ... and they have a decent amount of content to cover all levels.

Scream all you want, but in the end you haters all knows this game will reach 10million active sub within a year and top WoW then let's see your whines.

I am an AoC Player and have been pissed over the stupid comments about how Vanguard is getting ALL these subs from AOC. I decided to Load up the game after a year of not wanting to even look at it. 8 1/2 hours of patching {With a 15X2 Connection} and it seems to be the same old cookie cutter EQ2 wanabee game that I Left.  Every time you go to log in it takes 15 to check files. What a Drag

I have to laugh. A Ghost town game compairing itself to a game that dwarfs it by a mile, because of some issues. Its like looking at a Chihuahua trying to take on a Great Dane

So if you perfer Vanguard, More power to you.

I bought the game and for the first time since EQ1 (I have played nearly all mmo's since then) I QUIT before my 1st 30 days were up.

A huge game to install, lots of bugs, lousy UI and overall game planning, 1 race, perf issues galore and to top it off it lacks a "soul" of some kind...I mean I could not attach to these characters at all. So it might be me>> it might be this crappy game (no fanboi's I don't think it will get better enough to make up for this mess they gave us for 50 bucks) but you can darn sure say they have 699,999 subs as I quit this am.

Vanguard has taken it's place....why? It's just more fun to play right now. My 2 coppers.

You are kidding me right?  There is no way in hell AoC will top WoW.   WoW is simple, easy to play, has content coming out of its wazoo, is stable and delivers on what it promises ( ... though milage may vary on the later as customers have varying expectations).

    Lets see with AOC.

    • The whole combo system will turn many players away for a start.  It suits the ADD crowd, but really it's not all that "user friendly" ... though it is different, I'll admit.
    • The zoning thing is a turn off.  Long live massive worlds with no loading screen.  Say no more on that front.
    • Content?  Grind from level 50 because there is no content.  And yet in the grind leveling past 50 was made so easy that 2 days after release there were level 80's?  Rpleacing content with an "easy" grind is a cheap tactic.  Funcom's strategy for gameplayer retention makes no sense at all.  The game is simply not finished in that respect.
    • The patch frenzy is getting tiresome.  There is little to no testing and they are introducing more bugs every patch.  AND they are holding patches in my primetime gametime.  WTG Funcom!  Make Oceanic servers and then patch them in Oceanic primetime!  WOOT!
    • Classes are not balanced.  We have a PvP world where the classes are spread from godlike to massively underpowered.  So they nerf and boost now ... but this should have been done in beta.  They are just serving to piss off their current playerbase.
    • Lack of delivery on the promise.  DX10?  But, hey lets face it ... few MMO's deliver on the hype.  I blame the marketers and under-estimating, over-promising management for that.

As I said in a previous post, give the game a year and it will probably be a great game.  And during that time it will likely hold enough players to make itself sustainable, if not quite profitable .. enough so to allow Funcom to fix the problems.

But it will not sustain anywhere near the subscriptions that WoW has.  WoW is a game for the masses.  I'm not sure AoC can ever claim that title.

I never said that Vanguard was getting ALL the subs from AoC.  The number of comments on in-game chat from people who have left AoC and who are now enjoying Vanguard is astounding.  How long that lasts past the free month, I have no idea.  There is however no doubt the game is far more stable, smooth and has much more content than it did when I left it.  Vanguard had a year in the oven to properly bake.  AoC needs that year.

  • GruntiesGrunties Member Posts: 859

I'm a little offended that Funcom has the gall to use my cancelled-after-2-weeks account in their 'totals' to try and hype their game further and make it seem more popular than it is. But I'll get over it.

They can fake subscription numbers but they can't fake a good game.

Waiting for: A skill-based MMO with Freedom and Consequence.
    Woe to thee, the pierce-ed.

For those who think this data was used from only those in the first month, I ask that we look at the day this info was released to us and how it wasn't released mid June when they knew who had bought the game. For what I can tell, by stating these numbers on June 30, over a month past launch, when people have resubbed.

I have resubbed so mine is one of the numbers.

  • silverlobosilverlobo Member Posts: 76

I for one am not surprised that they have sold over 700,000 boxes, and I'm not surprised they are using that number over active subscribtion numbers. What FunCom does well is, PR and Graphics, they pretty much suck at everything else.

Gamers not just wanted something other then WoW they needed something other then WoW, hence the large number of box sells so far. The problem is put AoC up against WoW and compare game play...its a no brainer AoC fails in every way.

Any number other then active subscribtion is just FunCom PR blowing smoke up your ass imo.

  • gurugeorgegurugeorge Member UncommonPosts: 481

I think some of the haters here are missing a trick.  Many are claiming that when WAR and WoTLK come out, the AoC subscriber numbers will plummet.  But actually I think what may have happened is that AoC garnered a whole new bunch of subscribers who weren't previously interested in High Fantasy settings, and aren't familiar with MMOs.  i.e., I suspect that for a huge number of subcribers to AoC this is their first MMO, and they're pretty much enjoying it.

I think the numbers in the US will probably just be average, but Europe will be the main source of subcribers for Funcom, because that kind of gritty, "realistic" setting appeals very much to European players in general (think the Gothic series, which was HUGE in Europe, hardly known in the US, The Witcher, etc., etc.).  The combat system is also tailored more to that kind of audience - the realistic "feel" of swinging a big hammer and breaking heads, the splash damage, the more real-time feel.

And such people just won't be interested in WAR and WoTLK.

Another way of putting this: what Funcom have done is found a niche in the MMO market that hasn't actually been tapped yet: people who want to play an MMO in a non-High Fantasy and also non-s-f setting.

Its a collection of data from launch to the end of the free month. So it is only based off units registered, not active subs (because if it was active subs, they would have said active subs)

There are 3 types of people in the world.
1.) Those who make things happen
2.) Those who watch things happen
3.) And those who wonder "What the %#*& just happened?!"
