MMO Lag and WiFi Cards? Recommendations pls

Pookie666Pookie666 Member Posts: 33

Hi,

Looking for any experiences you might have around the current crop of WiFi cards from Sprint/Verizon. Just for the record I'm NOT talking about your regular wireless cards for 802.11a/g/g but rather the ones that allow you access off the cell phone networks :)

I'm wondering specifically if lag would be a problem???

I have one from work and it's actually pretty decent for surfing and office stuff, but nervous on how it would perform on today's MMO's (AoC, WoW, etc). Sadly, my new laptop requires another type for the PCMCI but before I go down that path I was hoping maybe someone had some advice?

Thanks a lot in advance!

I've heard claims of 6k+ ping in WoW.

That might have been away from inner city, but still. I don't believe you should expect anything lower than 1000ms.

You'll see lag as you don't get the speeds that you'd get with 802.11 cards as you'll probably only see speeds of around 512kb/sec. I may be a bit off on the speeds as I work on gsm networks and sprint/verizon use a slightly different technology.

I dunno. YOu might get enough juice to make a game playable..but I would suggest waiting til you get home and playing on your desktop...use the wifi for work.

You could probably play some older games and what not easily though.

I really can't say beyond a shadow of a doubt, as I don't use laptops/wifi to game with.

The OP isn't really talking about your standard WiFi, it talking about a datacard on a cellular network.

Thanks for the inputs all. You are right I'm mainly interested in the cellular cards that have been coming out.
