Its an open world like WoW BUT there is short loading when entering buildings.. alot of story quests are instanced and the Pv(M)P zone is not connected to the rest of the world (but not instanced)
So its nothing like AoC, Guild wars or DoD...
If WoW = The Beatles and WAR = Led Zeppelin Then LotrO = Pink Floyd
The vast majority of outdoor areas are open and seamless, and there are some common dungeons, and some instanced dungeons.
However, there are loading screens for transitioning into and out of all indoor areas. I don't know if you'd literally call these "instances" since there is only one zone for each indoor area (i.e. everybody is in the same one), but they are separate and require a load.
As others said, the starting towns are presented as a separate instance until you complete the initial series of quests. This is done to show the passage of time--the starting town changes after you pass into the main world. However, all players that are in the beginning phase are in the same area...it is not personal to you.

supposedly the expansion is going to have some technology that will cut down on the loading screens.

Open world like Wow...there is a small instance in the beginning of the game like 1st 5 levels, but you are with other lower levels too.

Never played WoW, so I can't comment on it, but I would say that LotR is about 90% open world, there are some instances in it, but it's limited.
