Shadowbane vs. Darkfall

SystranSystran Member Posts: 105

Alright, hands down Shadowbane was the best RPG i've played in awhile. UO had me hooked for sure but it got too boring after awhile. If Shadowbane didn't have so many freakin "zones" my computer wouldn't have lagged so much...i wouldn't have died so much.....and i would've kept the game. Anyway....

Completely psyched about Darkfall coming out. Not so sure i like this 1st person view idea. Can't see how this is gonna work in a good way to be honest. The view that Shadowbane gave was awesome. I dunno....any pros and cons to weigh down what this game's gonna actually be like? imageimage

Well, there is going to be an optional third person view, if that makes you feel any better.

FPS view is the best view for games that aim to count player skill, and not just character skill. Darkfall is one of those games.

    I'll try.

First of all, there are no safe zones. That, however, does not mean you aren't safe anywhere. You CAN be attacked anywhere, but there are consequences. For instance, if you are in a heavily guarded city, surrounded by allies, there are about no chances you get killed. But it's possible: Someone might just kill you and steal your stuff. That'd mean that all the guards and players in the surrounding area would then attack your murderer. So basically, yes, you can be killed in a "safe" place, but the aggressor will die in the process. It's also possible that an ennemy nation tries to conquer the city. In that case, you're pretty much in danger.

Also, it's a race war. The humans, elves and dwarves are allied. The mahirim and orks are allied. And the Alfars are on their own. That means that a human cannot kill an elf, dwarf or another human without taking an allignment hit. If you kill, steal an ally, your allignment goes towards "evil" and you'll be attacked on sight. However, a Human is free to kill any other races. Mahirim and orks can't kill each other without turning evil, but they can kill all the other races. Alfars can kill anyone but alfars.

Hoever, Clans controlling a city can their own laws. It'd be hard to deal with opposing races in the same city, as they'd fight each other all the time, but it's up to the players.

Also, if you're a criminal (evil allignment to your race and its allies), you'll be on your own. Meaning that all the races will want you dead. This is why cities are usually safe. You could also set yourself a nice outpost in the far away regions of the world, and you could be pretty safe there as well. However, there is always a chance ennemies or criminals find you there. But the world is HUUUUGEE with hundreds of islands and such. So everything is possible.

That's pretty much how the open PvP will work. There are no restrictions, but there are consequences.

If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer. I read pretty much everything I could find about DF, from the features to the FAQ to dev quotes, chat logs, Q&As, etc. Some of the info is old and subject to change, alot I don't remember clearly, but I'm sure I can be of help.

This is just how it should be. Open PvP does not mean "no consequences". If you are pking your own side then you should be punished, but at the same time you should still have that option.

I'm holding out for Darkfall or DnL ... not sure which I'll go with, but one of these two for sure.

In the meantime, WoW will pass the time ... without an empire building aspect though I suspect Darkfall and DnL can't come soon enough :) !

Just to clarify, the Third Person View only comes into effect during melee battles. Otherwise you see First Person View.

Personally, I like TPV better, but that might be because I'm so used to it. I'm willing to give FPV a shot, especially because Darkfall has all the other features I've wanted in a MMORPG for so long.

Plus, I'll go melee to get the TPV during combat, so that should satisfy me pretty good.

People have told me that in order to get used to FPV in DF I should play Morrowind, so I might do that.

SB was gonna be driven by racial conflict but that was not enforced by any game mechanics. Without some racial motivated conflict like DF has proposed the conflicts are less meaningfull. DF as outlined would be an awsome game but I doubt the game we will eventualy play will be half the game they propose at this point.

First of all I really did not like SB ....but that is my own opinion but you really gotta be outta your mind to even try to compare SB with what DF will be! No way will SB even be able to hold a candle to DF! :p

If sharing my all knowing wisdom offends you I apologize........kinda!

In my opinion, DF will be in a way SB2, with all the best things from SB and everything that SB could never accomplish, such as graphics, vehicles, open pvp, mounts, etc.

DarkFall will be probably best PvP MMORPG for years to come.... If it comes out heh :D

I full on agree with you...SB had this...feeling that drawed former players back...heck when I logged on after a 3 month absence and announced it to the people around me about 4 of em said "I came back a week ago" I have a feeling this game will do the same to its customers.

For me Shadowbane was the biggest let down game ever. The level grinding was annoying as hell, especially since when you finally got a group together. Someone would just go afk and eat off your experiance. The customization of characters was alot more liner then I originally thought it was going to be. When you finally got good your character good, built up castle etc... bigger ones would come and destroy it. So it seemed your guild was a race to be first and if it wasnt you were screwed. So if you ask me which will be better shadowbane or Darkfall I kinda start to think you havnt played to many other mmorpg´s. Cause from the looks of it if Darkfall comes out, people wont even remember Shadowbane.  I know alot of you will argue that it wasnt a liner character base, cause of all the diciplines. but everyone choose the same ones cause they made some alot better then others.
